  1. I just finished a draft version of a "worksheet" designed to quickly teach syllable division and a bit of Webster's Speller. It is designed for a child taught with phonics that does not yet read at the 12th grade level. They need to be sounding out all phonograms to work through this. It should take 15 to 30 minutes, and by the end they will be reading a selection at the 12th grade reading level. I have no actual children that I can test this on...my son is below this level and I've already taught my daughter syllables. My remedial students are not good candidates because of their underlying reading problems. So, I'd appreciate any feedback--does it work? Is it understandable? I'm aiming for understandable but not idiot proof. It is for someone who has previously taught phonics.   2. Does anyone have any opinions as to which is better? If you have used both and can tell which you like better and why, that would be great. I know they are similar, but I'm having a difficult time deciding which I like best :)

    spelling

    anyone using the american spelling book for spelling by noah webster. donpotter.net has a dowloadable version that has been retyped for easier reading. i am going to use it along with The ABCs and All Their Tricks. anyone else using it? if you are can you give me an idea of how you schedule out your lesson plan.
  4. what should I do? At this point I want to teach my children syllabification (a la AAS 2 or ?). I have realized that PR doesn't do this (I'm sure there is some reason and perhaps it's not as important as I think it is. It makes sense to me though!). I have actually toyed with returning the PR and using AAS but I have reservations there as well. In a last ditch effort to solidify my decision I'm wondering if there are any PR users who also want to teach syllabification. How will you do this? When? What will you use? Any more experienced Moms who can set me straight if this desire is unfounded??? If my MAIN reason for choosing PR is to teach strong phonics and spelling skills then I wonder if it will be overkill. I'm not sold on the AIO aspect yet . . . Maybe AAS would be a better choice and it will include the syllabification. Those are just my out loud thoughts -- no need to respond!! :lol: :confused: :confused: :confused: (Insert a tiny little voice saying "God please send a sign from Heaven telling what to do????")
  5. I never realized how important phonics/syllabication rules were with my first dc. He was a quick learner when it came to reading/spelling, so I pretty much skipped all the rules and let him read, read, read. I realize now that he's in 5th grade that was a mistake. I bought AAS to use with my 2nd and 3rd child this year, and when he overheard me teaching them the rules, he said, "Hey, I didn't know that! Why didn't you teach that to me?" I've also noticed that he mispronounces a lot of the words I thought he knew (mainly bc he doesn't know the vowel sounds for open/closed syllables for bigger words). Megawords is so organized and just what he needs. I love the pretest for reading/spelling in the teacher's guide! He's tested out of several chapters, and we've been able to focus on the rules he needs to know! I have peace of mind now! If you do decide to get Megawords for your older kids, you must order the teacher's guide to get the full benefit of the program! Oh, and if you're reading this and you have young kids, save yourself some time and money and go with a good phonics program from the beginning!
  6. I am using FLL 2 w/ my 2nd grade son who is doing fine with it. I remembered dividing words into syllables, marking vowels, identifying the root word/prefix/suffix, and learning about the different "tenses" of words, & 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person... In elementary grades I was taught with Abeka. I looked ahead in ds' FLL 1/2 book and it does not cover these things. Does FLL 3 or 4 cover them? Are they even that important and should I worry about it being "missed"? I'm making myself so nuts over this. I started this particular thread of thought over a month ago and actually ordered the entire Abeka LA 2 program. Now I'm sitting here looking over it wondering how on earth I could ask my ds7 to do all this on top of what we're already doing (it would be in addition to FLL). That was my plan originally, but it's just. so. much. I'm trying to look through it and see if I can give him the "meat" or main concepts from the Abeka program w/o all the overkill. Do the things that I listed above (underlined) really matter to reading, writing, and spelling ability in the long run? Any help is much appreciated. I almost long to be in a decade when the internet didn't exist, OK not really, but then I couldn't make myself dizzy with such a wide array of curriculum choices! :tongue_smilie:
  7. Hi there, My 1st grader DS just started ETC book 4. The first lesson was compound words, and now he is on the second lesson for common endings (-ful, -ing, -ness, etc). But after this lesson, the remainder of the lessons work on syllable division. Ten lessons on syllabication seems like an awful lot for this age -- it would work out to about 3 months of phonics. I am tempted to skip the rest of the lessons in 4 and move onto 5, which works on word families, 3 letter blends, -ey, and -ed. He did well on book 3, but I could buy 3 1/2 for extra practice. I can understand that some work on syllable division would help with sounding out words, but is this too much for a first grader? Or would I be doing my DS a disservice by skipping over these lessons? TIA for your help! :) Amy
