Hello, two years ago my 14 year old sister completed 7th grade at a public school, and then moved to a different country where she was kept behind at 7th grade due to factors out of her control. She's expressed disdain at the math being well below what she's capable of (she called it "painfully simple algebra" when I asked what she was studying). Although it's an English medium school, the country's national language isn't English (hers is) so English is basic as well. She's very smart, even for her age. We're also considering this a "trial run" for homeschooling highschool. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for sources to use for catching her up over the summer. Currently, I'm considering quickly going over Foerster algebra 1 and then starting either AoPS geometry or moving onto Foerster's algebra 2. (I'm not too confident in my ability to teach geometry so we might switch it out for Kiselev vol. 1) For English, I was thinking about using writing strands level 4 or 5 (which?) along with The Best Grammar Workbook Ever. She'd like to start AP Biology this year if possible, so we might go over the important concepts from biology and chemistry along with a crash course in Anki if time permits. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? Anything helps! -
Hello, I'm planning on taking a few courses over the summer to get them out of the way for this coming school year. It'll free up my schedule and give me some time to work on the tough classes I'll be taking. Are BYU summer courses especially demanding? I'd like to work a job during this time as well, and I'd like to be done with my classes by the end of summer. Is that possible, or are they intended to last a full year? The courses I'm looking at are GOV 041, ECON 041, and an easy reading (edit: or maybe literature?) elective. Will that be unmanageable for the summer? Thanks! -

Has anyone attended the Public Speaking Institute class (5th-8th grade) at UCLA offered by Education Unlimited during the summer? Any feedback and advice would be much appreciated. -
Hi: My dd is perusing the Duke TIP summer camp catalog. She is interested in many classes and having a hard time narrowing them down. What classes have your students enjoyed or not enjoyed? Is one location (Duke, Trinity, Wake Forest, etc.) better or worse than another? ETA: Dd is in 8th grade and qualifies for the Center.

The NY Times has a cool contest for 13-19 year olds. From mid June to mid Aug they can submit their response to any news article they read in the NY Times for a chance to win a prize that week. I've been facebook messaging ds19 who is spending the summer between his freshman and sophmore year doing research on campus. He sounds like he loves his work. He is studying the dna relationships between the species of the tulip trees in North America and East Asia. I actually understood some of what he was talking about (hey, I watched the OJ trials.) He has had to do some troubleshooting to find out why there was DNA in the control batches - only to find out that they had some contaminated reagents. He is getting some excellent mentoring from his professor. Also, they have weekly department meetings where they mentor the research assistants on how to write research proposals. They will get lots of practice which will help him when he has to do independent research as an upper classman. He has had a couple of departmental picnics, a frisbee golf outing and just hanging out. Apartment living has not been his undoing (Praise God.) He is so indecisive about food and can get low blood sugar while deciding what to eat :glare: . But, he appears to be managing well and making a lunch to take to work every day. This is the kid that I had to practically shove out the door to go away to college. I had to make the phone calls to set up college visits. I had to hold his hand and/or prod him to get his applications done. (Or I was sure I would have 40 year-old unemployed genius living in my basement.) He has matured so much in the last year. He has matured so much in the last two weeks. I am so proud of my shy, reticent boy. :hurray: -
I remember last year Sonlight offered a summer reader package. We didn't purchase it, but used that list for our library trips for my avid reader. I can't find anything like that on their website today. Are they not doing a summer reader package this year?? -
Worldview Academy is a non-denominational organization dedicated to helping Christians to think and to live in accord with a biblical worldview so that they will serve Christ and lead the culture. Worldview Academy Leadership Camps are one-week camps for 13 to 18 year-olds. They are very strong in their apologetics teaching, and they make it lots of fun too. They are very well organized and are quite popular among the homeschoolers in our area. Out of the 21 camps scheduled in different college campuses this summer, two are almost full and five are wait-listed already (as of May 28, 2013). We highly recommend these camps. Each time this code is used, my son gets a discount off his camp registration fee. This will be his third time attending this Worldview camp. I am excited that summer is approaching. We will do a little bit of school but I love to have time to focus on other things too :-) *** I will not even look at my new curriculum until July to start planning unless all my kids go to grandmas for a week. I need a curriculum break!!*** GOALS: finish our Math programs, do educational websites, read a ton, and do GTG a few days a week. focus on my diet and exercise and lose these last 30 or so pounds once and for all work hard on a budget and finances-coupon like a madwoman, hang dry all our clothes, do not use the oven, sell everything I can.... hit as many yard sales as possible go somewhere fun twice a month (botanical gardens, magic house, zoo, museum) -

I'm looking for grammar review for both a 3d and an upcoming 7th grader. -but not one they do together. I want something they can spend about 30 minutes a day on 4-5 times a week during the Summer. Cheap is great. Anyone have any favorites/ideas?

I just started my new blog, and I've decided to use it this summer to write my summer curriculum, which will cover US History from 1774 - 1865. The study will be approximately 11 weeks in length. I will be teaching boys and girls this summer ages 5 - 12, so the curriculum will cover these ages. We will also have a History Club meeting once a week for girls only, ages 8-12. I will write meeting notes into the curriculum. Readers for girls ages 8-12: American Girl Books, 6 books for each of the 4 girls from 1774 - 1865. That would be the Felicity books, Josefina's books, Kirsten, and Addy. (I will not include readers for the younger children, or the boys.) Read Alouds for the girls ages 8-12: Welcome to _______'s World for all 4 American Girls. Read Alouds for all ages boys and girls ages 5-12: Various literature selections from "All Through the Ages" by Christine Miller in their time periods to cover famous individuals and famous events. Writing: Journal writing assignments, which are yet to be written by me. Memory: Daily time-line recitation for the events and famous people studied. do you feel is/are an absolute must to continue over the summer? I'm asking because I worry about my ds "losing" information and us having to spend unnecessary time in the fall reviewing. I'm thinking we'll continue with math practice, but is there something else I should be worrying about? Thanks!

I am looking for math work for my sons for the summer. I will be finishing Saxon 1 and 3 with my sons in May, but I plan to continue with homeschooling this summer. I would prefer it it were something that they could do every day (five days) to continue practicing math problems and concepts. Or should I go ahead and start Saxon 2 and 54 (which I plan to use for next year)? Any suggestions? How do you schedule Saxon math to cover an entire year?
