  1. I am thinking of getting something else to help with math. My foster son is in grade 6 but is currently homeschooled. We are using Horizons 3 for the spiral nature. ( When we try to do mastery type math he forgets whatever we have learned when we go back to it. I have taught and retaught how to tell time.) We have supplemented with Math Mammoth Level 2 and level 3 where appropriate. He is all over the place with math. He can add 4 digit numbers together with multiple addenends, and we have been working on multiplication facts. We completed the section in MM Level 2 on subtraction. He did okay but needed a lot of handholding. But attempts to try MM Level 3 is just bringing frustration. He has build up some sort of block about subtraction and is currently just dissolving into tears whenever we tackle it. He has 2 problems with subtraction. He does not seem to have the facts memorized ( although he can figure them out). ( I don't know why that part is so hard when he can do addition okay?) If it regroups more than once, he forgets and just subtracts UP instead. If I correct him, he just dissolves into tears a lot of the time. I feel like he HAS to get his subtraction facts down for his own peace of mind. He knows he doesn't know them and it stresses him out considerably. I was debating between Ronit Bird stuff or MUS Alpha. I feel like a lot of Alpha he might just breeze through but maybe not. I wondered if MUS Beta did much reviewing of Alpha and if that would be enough. The Ronit Bird site is down everytime I try to access it right now, so I am not sure what their work is like. Note: I am currently waiting on the result of IQ testing with the Woodcock Johnson. I have no idea how helpful the report might be and if I need to wait on that to get a better sense of what to order?

  3. So we got to the subtraction part. and we've hit a road block. I am confused on how to teach this. They have jumped to subtracting numbers bigger than 10. How am i supposed to do this. My daughter just got te hang of crossing out and counting backwards to get to answer. Did I miss a very important step here. How is she supposed to get to the answer using double digits. using the number line at the top of the page when they first introduced subtraction. She uses a lot of finger counting as well with adding. for ex, 5+2, she'll put 5 in her head, and then count each finger until she gets to two fingers up. so 5... 6, 7. Any help on teaching these to her. I wish there was some kind of help on this. She's 6 btw.
  4. DS has been moving very smoothly through Singapore 1A. The only thing I sense he's not grasping instinctual is the subtraction and addition of numbers over ten. For addition, I kept trying to teach him the book's method of taking one of of the numbers and using some of the other number to make it ten. Example: 7 + 8 = ? What do you need to add to eight to make it ten? Two. So take two from the seven and add it to eight and make it ten. What's 7-2? 5. What's 10 + 5? 15. So he has a hard time doing that mentally. Same with subtraction. I have to walk him through it again and again. I showed him a few other ways, like using the abacus, drawing marks and crossing them out. So my question is this: for the bigger picture of mathematics, how should I continue to work with him? Is grasping the 'making 10" method a great help to more advanced mathematics? Is using the abacus a good way of helping him get it mentally? Any other tricks/manipulatives I can use?
  5. How should I teach my son to memorize addition and subtraction math facts? When should I start before he starts addition in Singapore math essentials kindergarten B or after? Any programs, cds or mnemonic devices that I should consider? :confused:
  6. ...completely did not understand how MUS handles the -9 lesson (#21)??? The whole idea of making it two steps and figuring it out from 10 made no sense to me. I just abandoned that way of doing it and stuck with the basic concept of turning a subtraction into a reversed addition problem. I was just wondering if anyone else had issues with how MUS handled parts of subtraction or if it's just me!!! Thanks for letting me do a mini-vent. :) I feel better now. But would still love to hear from others!
