Can anyone recommend a book that explains spelling rules? My son is in 3rd grade and is using Spellwell, but I would like to have a book that explains spelling rules. We used All About Spelling last year, and while I loved how they taught spelling rules, it just didn't work for us. So far I've looked at "The Everything Kids Spelling Book" and "Spelling Works". Any recommendations greatly appreciated!!

link to free Spelling Rules student workbook and teacher guide-8 weeks I'm not sure if anyone ended up using the free Spelling Rules worksheets I posted in this long dead thread. I wanted to let people know I have done quite a bit of work on the book, revisions and revamping the layout. I posted 8 weeks worth of the worksheets on google docs. They are free for personal use and I'd love any feedback on them. If anyone did end up making use of the previous worksheets I'd love any feedback or ideas on how to make them better (I know there were a few typos). Things I changed: 1. I numbered the student answer lines and matched them up. I had extra lines previously as I thought it would be helpful to give the kids space to cross out mistakes and write them on a new line and space for reviewing previously misspelled words. My kids let me know they'd prefer the lines matching up. :) I added a few lines on the bottom for review words. 2. I changed the teacher's guide review and test pages to recommend testing for 20 words, the words are numbered and the extra words are still provided. So that should be simpler to use.

I have always liked rule-based spelling and phonics, but I've had a hard time finding a curriculum I love. I've read that several people here love Sequential Spelling, but I was turned off by it's opposition to rules. Can someone argue for or against it? To me, drop the e when you add ing makes a lot of sense, but it seems not everyone feels that way. Thoughts?

For those of us looking for a "rules-based" spelling program(workbook-y if possible:), what ARE the spelling rules?.. How many are there? Are some rules taught as "phonics"? I think "if it ends in a y, change the y to an I and add -es" is a "rule" but it was just taught in my dd's Easy Grammar 3. So is there just a lot of overlap? Help.. I'm confused! For those of you teaching "the rules" or with a "rules based" spelling program (like AAS).. do you require your children to memorize them? or just go over it with no memorization. TIA

I just received my copy of Spelling Workout. I was hoping for a bit more detail in respect to the spelling rules they provide. For example, the tip states that sometimes c can be pronounced using a hard c and sometimes a soft c sound. I would have liked to have been provided with examples. Usually when c is followed by an e, i or y, it is a soft c sound. That little bit of information can be very beneficial to new readers and spellers. Are there any books or resources that list common spelling rules like this?

Has anyone ever seen a poster version of English spelling rules (along the lines of Riggs Institute or Spell to Write and Read) or a complete set of phonograms? I know you can order two-sided cards for both, but I’m looking for something I can hang on the wall. More for me than the kids, ha. Thanks in advance, KC

Advice sent to teachers says there are too few words which follow the rule and recommends using more modern methods to teach spelling to schoolchildren.

ElizabethB, I wonder if you would help me see how you go about teaching the multi-syllable words. Your posts encouraged me to begin using Webster's with my ds back at the end of January, and I've come to a stumbling point. It could be that I haven't been consistent enough with the syllabary lately, because ds seems to be trying to guess a lot. I thought we'd gotten over that hump. For example, today, I was having him read dra per y, flu en cy, etc. I'm using these two words in my example because of his struggle with the first syllables in each word. In drapery, he first said darpery. With fluency, he first said fulency. He seems to do this a lot with beginning blends. If he's being lazy and just trying to go through quickly, he also adds sounds to the the second syllables that aren't there. Another thing, I feel like I've been telling him over and over that sometimes the vowel in the unstressed syllable says the schwa sound, and he still isn't getting the mushing idea. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I should be explaining that I'm not? He's my child I tend to get frustrated with anyway because every time I try to correct him, I get a drawn out drama whine fest. Could you please explain a teaching session you might have with your tutorees? We have already gone through your online lessons. I can see an improvement in his reading overall, but there is a long road to travel. Thank you!

I am seriously considering AAS for my kids next year. I've poured over the website and looked at a sample lesson. So far, I'm liking what I see. But, there's a little problem. My dd, who will be in 4th, is generally a decent speller. She can memorize and regurgitate a list of words like no one's business. but often has problems sounding out words to spell them. She is an excellent reader and has been reading since she was 4. I taught her phonics, but even I don't know the names for all the sounds and such. She was in ps until last Nov., so I'm sure she's picked up some bad habits. (Her last ps gave multiple choice spelling tests- as in choose one of these spellings:glare:.) I would love for her to get all the spelling rules from AAS1, but is that too young for her? My ds6 would be doing the same program. Would that be too weird for her to be on the same level as her little brother? If I do decide to put her in AAS2, is it possible to just review the rules from level 1 that week and do level 2 with her? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
