  1. My 8yo son is currently using Horizons 3rd grade math. We both like the worksheets and that it has built in review. He's moving through it fine, but I feel like we're reaching a point where he is looking for more of the "why" not just the "how". I'm not looking to abandon the curriculum entirely, but I'm looking for something to add to round out the conceptual side of math that I feel is lacking. I've seen a lot of people talking positively about RightStart, Singapore (I see there are 2 options, Dimensions Math and Primary Math - happy to hear about both of these), and Math in Focus and

  5. My oldest dd finished Primary Mathematics, Standards 6 last year (after having done 1A-6B for elementary), and I was pleased with the program. We went through Jousting Armadillos during the first part of the year, but Crocodile and Cocunuts seems to be a lot trickier/more of a slog for her to wade through the words,words,words to the point of the math. Which makes me think that AoPS may not be just the thing to follow up with (I have Chuckles the Rocket Dog waiting for next).   6. Last year we used MUS Primer with lots of supplements to fill in the holes. My son's favorite subject WAS math. For 1st we switched to Mammoth Math, because I felt Alpha seemed light. He hates it. The pages and amount of problems we need to do are overwhelming to him. He IS really progressing with math and I like open and go nature of MM. I'm torn because while I like the program it is killing his love for math. It has also become a fighting point during school.   7. I'm wondering if anyone is using the Singapore Series for their older students. I'm thinking that we'll use the New Elementary Mathematics hopefully starting in 7th. I also have the Videotext Algebra course (just A, so far). I'd love to hear about your experiences. Including your thoughts on how it is to teach the courses....   9. I thought there was a thread comparing the US edition vs. Standards and now I can't find it. I'm looking into Singapore to use tandem with Miquon. Does it matter which edition we use? Their website makes it seem like it won't really matter.
  10. Hi There, I'm so excited!! I just purchased the 1A& 1B guides and textbooks. For these first few books, do I need the workbooks? My son is 6 and can figure out his multiplication tables (6*8=48) and is good at basic 1st grade math. (Mostly just by "living math" type stuff) I'm mostly wanting to go through these as review... and to learn the "Singapore Way" :-) I have Unifix cubes, and cuisinaire rods. I can make the cards with dots.. I think. I have a Melissa and Doug abacus and also a Japanese abacus. I have flashcards, although I've never used these with my 6 year old.
  11. I just received Singapore Math 1B in the mail. We ordered the HIG, text, workbook for the Standards edition. I also ordered intensive practice from the US edition because my gal was between 1B and 2A in terms of skills and we went with the lower since we were new to the program. Here are my questions... The HIG is great with how to introduce the lesson. Then the assignments are there. Do you do all text and workbook pages listed for that "lesson" (some days it seems like a lot) Or do you break it up into more than that? How do you determine it? Just while you are working on the
  12. Hi There, So, I have 5a, 5B and 6A along with the HI Guide. I'd love to understand the the Estimate Rules that they use. For example: 959 / 33 ~ 900 / 30 = 30 So, I think that the / is for divide, right?? Anyway, that's what I mean in the above problem. Now,If I were just rounding, I'd go up to 1000 because the "59" would be enough to get it up to 1000. and I can see the 33 becoming 30. Could you refresh me or teach me why it's like this?? Thanks!   13. Ok, for someone who's gone through this... I have a son who understands that he can skip count for a multiplication answer, I'm using a Japanese abacus to teach basic math. Although... the abacus is for just solidifying his understanding. He can look at 8 + 9 and without using his fingers tell you it's 17. He loves to sing about squares and cubes... He memorizes better than I ever have. Review it three times... and he's set. He is a young 6; right now he loves math.   14. Oh wow! I am so much more impressed with Singapore math now that I finally have all the things recommended to teach it. I had started Singapore this summer using it with an all-in-one curriculum and just never could feel the love for it. I asked over and over again whether I needed the Home Instructor's guides or any of the extras. Each time was told no you can do it with just the "activities" in this curriculum and it will work great.   15. I'm a new homeschooler who will officially start next Monday with my 7 year old DS (and to a lesser degree with my 4 yo DS). This summer we've been going through MUS Alpha to revisit all the math facts he never learned in PS. We made it through the addition section with no problems; subtraction is a little more challenging in part because (as I mentioned in a earlier thread), I cannot wrap my mind around their explanation on how to subtract 9! My son was fine with thinking of subtraction problems as addition problems in reverse but then with the whole idea of "9 vacuuming 1" and adding 1 elsew
  16. I'm planning to use Singapore math with my dd starting in 1st grade, but I'm not sure what to do about the workbooks. Are they an integral part of the program? (i.e. if I tried to supplement with worksheets I find online, would dd be missing out on some of the best of Singapore math?) Also, are the workbooks consumable, or is it easy enough to copy problems and photocopy an occasional worksheet so the workbooks can be reused? Thanks!
  17. Hi! We've been using Math-U-See (alpha level) for my dd5 for Kindergarten. I'm not really pleased with it, so I decided we need to switch to something else. My short list is: Right Start Miquon Singapore (I'm open to other programs too) Here's why I'm not happy with MUS: 1) I had thought that since it uses manipulatives, it would be more fun than doing endless worksheets. As it happens, it's endless worksheets that you're supposed to figure out using the manipulatives. (boring, and not concrete enough IMO) So I've been supplementing with games and other activites that I find

  19. My almost-11YO-son is math bright but not gifted. We've been doing Singapore since Earlybird, and he's just finished 5A. (We flirted with Saxon 1. We supplemented with Daily Math Practice in 2nd and 3rd, but I'm not sure it was necessary. We haven't supplemented with any of the Singapore extras.)
