  1. Does anyone use Shurley English for grammar and substitute the writing with something else? If so, what do you use instead?
  2. I am very new to homeschooling, and of course did not heed the warnings not to purchase a lot of curriculum. For the most part, I have been extremely happy with my purchases...Except Shurley English... Perhaps because it's scripted, cumbersome, I have to move back and forth between the Teacher's Manual and Student Workbook, and DS9 does not like the jingles...at all. I can work around the jingles (ignore them), pick and choose which script to use, etc., if I hear enough feedback that it is a solid curriculum and worth the initial hassles of getting accustomed to something new. However, if another, more user-friendly curriculum exists, please tell me! I'll sell the books and not look back. I chose Shurley English because it is for the most part secular curriculum, mainly because I like to separate the subjects, but have changed my mind on this matter. I just want good, solid curriculum, religious orientation does not matter. The Well-Trained Mind recommends Rod & Staff or First Language Lessons. I will be reading reviews of both, but if anyone else has recommendations, then I am open to ideas. Thanks in advance for any help!
  3. For those of you who have used Shurley English (either before or with MCT) did you alter the labels MCT uses in it's parsing? I used Shurley English with my older crew (Levels 3 - 7) and really love the labels because they are very descriptive. MCT's labels seem more basic (his being labeled as an adjective instead of a possessive pronoun adjective, etc). Some things seem to be expanded upon in the "part of a sentence" section of the analysis but not all. I'm thinking I'd like to use the labels from Shurley English for the "parts of speech" or "parts of a sentence" but currently only have Grammar Island so I limited in what I can look up. I've been looking at samples of the others online but they aren't very comprehensive. If I use the Shurley labels I think I should do it from the beginning so I'm trying to get at least a general idea what I'm going to do and would love to hear from anyone who has experience with both, and what you did/didn't do/suggestions/etc.
  4. I was going to start VP and for grammar they use Shurley English. I am not familiar with this program at all. I was going to use it for my ds soon to be 7. We worked mostly on phonics and math this past year so I was wondering if I should start on level 1 or 2. If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it!

    Shurley English?

Does anyone use this? What do you supplement? What does it include? Just curious.
  6. I am looking to get a solid grammar and writing base for my son. He needs a bit of brushing up on rudimentary grammar skills, but needs a lot of help with Essay and Research writing. Could I use both of these together or would that be overkill? How much writing is in Shurley? How much grammar is covered in IEW? thanks
  7. Ok, here is the deal....I know *most* people are very passionate AGAINST Shurley! I've read threads until my eyes bleed...and yet, when I look at in, it really seems to make sense to me!! So, I am looking for advice as to why not? What was it that you disliked so passionately about it! Give it to me straight! This is for DS next year...4th grader. I know there is no diagramming...and many feel that is very important! However, my DD(17) who is graduating from PS (always attended PS) this spring..is #1 in her class and has NEVER diagrammed! She learned the parts of speech and that was about it. She got a 32 on her ACT and a 35 on the English portion! So, it was clearly not necessary...for her anyway! What else do people not like? Is it parent intensive? (Although, I don't really mind if it is WORTH it!) We are using MCTLA (LOVE!), but I want some basic grammar to go along with it! We are using GWG 3 this year, and I like it, but it seems very disconnected sometimes, and I am not sure how much retention is there! It is great because it is independent work, but if in the end, there is no retention..then it is clearly not worth it! I also considering R&S, which I know is a beloved program! We are using it for math this year as a supplement to McRuffy 3rd and it has been a perfect compliment! Old school...which I love when mixed with more ecclectic programs like McRuffy! Thanks!! Alicia
  8. If I were to do Shurley English 7, having not used Shurley before, could we just jump in at level 7, or should I backtrack? This is for an 8th grader. We've used level one of MCT, if that helps. But have no other grammar experience.
  9. I am planning to purchase Shurley for my 8 yr old son(9 in July). He has not had a formal grammar program yet. I've heard that there is enough review in the levels that I wouldn't have to start with Level 1, but I'm not sure if I should start him in 2,3, or 4. Any suggestions from others who've used it would be much appreciated!
  10. I ordered Shurley Grammar and it arrived yesterday. In looking it over, it looks like an incredible amount of material. Could someone tell me how much time they spend on Shurley Grammar? And how often you do it (every day, every other day, etc.)? I'm a bit overwhelmed so I figured I'd ask someone out there who has already done this. I don't want to undertake something that isn't doable for us. :001_smile: I ordered Grammar 4, 5 & 6 to look them over and see what the difference is, to determine which level makes the most sense for my dd. Can someone tell me if there really is a great difference in the levels?
  11. Have any of you used the Practice CDs? I'm wondering if I should purchase them too for next school year.
  12. I'm interested in feedback comparing these two Grammar programs. Any thoughts? I'm likely to use Writing with Ease and am looking for a complementary grammar program. We'll be heading into IEW around 4th grade, so I want to lay a good foundation. I've heard good things about Shurley, but would like to hear more about FLL? Thanks!
  13. I am trying to figure out a plan here. Someone lent me some Shurley English materials to look at and I am debating. It looks a bit daunting from the TG, but I haven't looked at the student workbooks yet. I see that there is a Jingles only CD and it says it can be used with any program as it is just jingles. Do you think this would work? Dawn
  14. I've been searching through old posts (well, as best I can:blush::lol:) and see that you were using MCT with Shurley English. I'm a fellow Shurley lover (I use just the grammar portions) and don't want to give it up but am intrigued by MCT. Are you still using MCT and Shurley together? If so, how are you doing it? Our older children are in high school (finished Shurley Levels 3 - 7 and are now doing Analytical Grammar) so they won't be using it but I'm looking at what we'll use with our second bunch (the oldest is currently in 1st grade so I have some time). I've been tweaking AG to fit with what we learned in Shurley (AG's labels are more simple) and am wondering what I can do with MCT and Shurley. Thanks!!
  15. My ds recently started Shurley for grammar. I noticed it only goes up to 7th grade. What do you use after that? I think I remember reading that SWB says they should be doing grammar all the way through high school. Right? Anything as good as Shurley? Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  16. Quick background: My son is a 5th grader. He is a words kid, not so much a numbers kid. We have used FLL since the begining. He really thrived with it. It just worked for us. We liked the conversational tone of the script, the lessons were very well laid out and just the right amount of work. He actually enjoyed grammar! However, all good things must come to an end. I picked GWG for 5th grade and it is NOT working for us. R&S is not an option for us. I decided aginst MCT due to cost and the fact that it does not diagram. My son is really good at diagramming and enjoys it (weirdo!). I am also not wanting to spend much more $ because I already spent 30$ on GWG. There is this: http://tinyurl.com/3xpe4nk It is free and looks acceptable. I am having a hard time figuring out what to use. The website offers 'reteach', 'practice', and 'extend.' Has anyone here used it? I am guessing I would just start at grade level, correct? How do the three parts work together? Am I correct that the 'reteach' lessons are like a textbook? I would teach from that? And the 'practice' is his workbook? What is the 'extend'? I assumed it was a writing component, which we don't need, but it looks like more grammar. One would think that I would know all this by just looking but I guess not. Now, I could be convinced to give R&S a second look but I would need some very specific ways to make it work in a non-Christian household. I am not sure I would be comfortable working with it.
  17. I really need the hives help! I really appreciate shurley grammar, I like the classifying and the jinggles. But it just so teacher intensive!!! Plus, I do it with all 3 of my older kiddos at once, but truthfully it is very difficult to get them together all at the same time. They each work thru their subjects at different speeds, and day after day we are left waiting for someone to finish their morning work. Then it gets so late we skip it and our grammar studies have become very choppy. I am pleading for suggestions  I guess I am looking for something they can open and run with. I don't mind working with them individually, so long as there is some independent work involved. Is this making sense to anyone? I'm wondering about R&S...
  18. Several reviewers said they were upset about the newer hs versions. Here's a blurb from Exodus books online. Sooo, what about other Shurley English options? I see they have a public school version and I found the teacher's manual used, but it may be to classroomy, IDK. Workbook would be more $ but I prefer them at first glance, I think. I'd have to get the cd separately if I went that route. Should I just order the CD-ROM to make it a surer bet of a positive experience for us? Also, the above site says this: Do any of you skip years or see the need to add extra practice? Shurley users what do you think? Thank you!
  19. I am looking into grammar for a first grade level. I am considering Shurley English Level 1 homeschool kit and First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind with Audio companion by Jessie Wise. Can anyone give feedback whether negative or positive regarding either of these curriculums?
  20. I will have a 1st grader and Kindergartener next year. I purchased Shurley English 1 to begin with my 1st grader. Then I begin lookig at our "long term" plan, and to make my life a bit more "doable" with two younger children as well, I want to teach my older girls as much as I can together. *They are 1 grade level apart, but 22 months apart. Can this be done with Shurley English? Should I wait and do level 1 with both of them the following year when the youngest is first grade (and oldest is second)? Then I feel like I am not helping my oldest reach her abilities... Or do I give the kindergartener a go at it and see what happens? I don't want to overthink this, but I do want to make some choices so that my life will be a bit easier. Anyone done this before? Have suggestions?
  21. I want to buy a comprehensive, stand-alone, grammar workbook that does not reqire a teacher's manual that is comaparable to Shurley's English. Is there such a thing? Or is Shurley's 400-plus page teacher's manual easy to use? I can only imagine Shurley's requiring tons of prep time:( I am hoping for a book on the 3rd grade level and up:) Thanks, priscilla:):)
