  1. My 9 year old just finished level 4 of AAS and it is not clicking. The first few levels were fine but I am now suspecting a mild form of dysgraphia. She is gifted and reading at a high level however spelling is becoming an issue. She has issues with picking the correct phonics usage (example valley vs vally or great vs grate) and she struggles with adding suffixes. She can tell you the rules but forgets to apply or know when to apply. I am considering logic of English essentials and sequential spelling. I am also open up to any other suggestions. She does not like the physical aspect of handwriting so I think spell you see is out. My son is severely dyslexic and we use Barton with him but it is too slow for her. Thank you for any assistance.
  2. We did a test-run with Sequential Spelling for my rising 6th grader and I think it will be a good match. She is a very poor speller and we have not had much luck so far using other curricula. We are going to start at the beginning with Level 1, but I am worrying that we are still going to be doing spelling in High School (aaaggghhh!). Does anyone have suggestions for going faster with this curriculum? Right now I am planning to do spelling through the summer and over other breaks. Anything else?
  3. I have always liked rule-based spelling and phonics, but I've had a hard time finding a curriculum I love. I've read that several people here love Sequential Spelling, but I was turned off by it's opposition to rules. Can someone argue for or against it? To me, drop the e when you add ing makes a lot of sense, but it seems not everyone feels that way. Thoughts?
  4. I have read so many threads about people loving SS. DD11 is not a great speller, to say the least. She is an avid reader and probably reads way above grade level, but I have never had her officially tested. She is also very good in math. But, she struggles so much with spelling! When she spells words incorrectly, I ask if if it "looks right" and she does not know. She reads very quickly, as well, but seems to have good comprehension, so I wonder if that is part of the issue. So, anyone here not have success with SS for this type of child? TIA!!
  5. Do any of you who use Sequential Spelling assign grades? If so, how do you do it? I know there is that quarterly assessment included in the book, but it just seems like it is not enough. My daughter would like to begin receiving grades in all of her classes, but this one has me stumped as to how to do it.
  6. We have used this program for two whole days, which I realize is a ridiculously short amount of time to review a product, but I am so optimistic! DS really struggled with rule-based spelling (we used AAS). He could recite the rule, but not apply it independently (I had to prompt him all the way through the process). Sequential Spelling really might be the ticket. I am soooo hoping! He is amazing at visual patterns (maxed out the psychoeducational testing in that category) and SS seems to teach to that strength. The best part is seeing him grin and feel so smart for spelling a new word without any help, because he can see the patterns. :D I'm a little confused about the method. The book doesn't clearly outline the steps in order - does the teacher go through each word with the student to show them the patterns, then erase the board and dictate the list, correcting each word as they go? That's what I did but not sure if it's the intended method.
