  1. Hello! I'm sure this has been addressed before but with the forum indexing still ongoing, I've not been able to find this in the Forum or through the Google Search instructions. My daughter will be entering 1st grade in August and this will be the first year we pursue the classical approach so I'm trying to get a big jump start on planning, purchasing materials, etc. In the Well Trained Mind, under Reading Skills three levels are mentioned: Instructional, At Level, and Below Level. These make sense to me, but I'm puzzled as to what exactly "instructional" readings would be. We are using the Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading for Phonics. At the end of the chapter on Grammar Stage Reading there are a lot of suggestions as to at level and below level books ("Click Clack Moo", The Frances series, etc.) but nothing regarding instruction other than Phonics. If someone here could either point me to a previous post about this or give me a hint as to what "instructional level" reading would be and/or recommend specific titles, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
  2. Ds was late starting to read. He's great at math, science, grammar, history, logic, Latin, but he was delayed reading and writing. This year he has finally made a breakthrough and is reading for pleasure. He reads at fifth grade level (he's reading the Meet the Presidents series by Mike Venezia which is leveled 5.0-5.9. and has no trouble reading them). His comprehension is excellent. When he reads for pleasure, he chooses chapter books with illustrations at the 3.1-3.5 level. He's churned right through all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and is now churning through the Cam Jansen series. I'm delighted. However, when I try to introduce books at his reading level, he says they're "too hard." Recently I offered Half Magic (fourth grade level which is still below his grade level) and he scanned the first page and said it was, "a little bit too hard," I understand he's catching up and is doing a good job. My question is, how can I help him advance in his reading as much as possible. Without applying undue pressure, how can I speed up the process so he can start reading the classics on his own? Right now he's listening to them on the iPod, which works great for us. Thanks in advance for any advise and comments.
  3. I have several little reading booklets that have abbreviations on the backs. I think I've seen this sort of thing explained before, but can't remember. There seem to be 3 series of books, all called Keep Books, by the Ohio State University. All of the books say on the back "pre-k, kindergarten, beginning first grade." One series has the abbreviations CB-1 through CB-8 on them. They also have the word count and reading level. The reading level abbreviations are: Book CB-1: GR B (the GR is above the B), RR 2 (the RR is above the 2) word count: 15 Book CB-3: GR A, RR 2 word count: 18 Book CB-5: GR A, RR 1 word count: 15 Book CB-6: GR A, RR 1 word count: 16 Book CB-7: GR A, RR 1 word count: 16 Book CB-8: GR B, RR 2 word count: 26 Another series doesn't have these word counts or reading levels, and are just called Book NR-1 Book NR-2 Book NR-4 Book NR-5 Book NR-6 Book NR-8 The last set has one set of abbreviations on the lower left, and another set on the lower right: mA CB-1 RW 30/L3/4 mA CB-2 RW 33/L2/3 mA CB-3 RW 34/L3 I was going to start using some of these today for reading practice, but there are a lot of sound blends in these that dd5 doesn't know yet. I thought maybe the reading level abbreviations might help me figure out what order to use them in.
