  1. The virtual charter school that we use just emailed that these programs will be free and not count towards our allotted funds so I'm excited to check them out this summer but I'm not sure how to use them. Waiting on the log in info so I can't see much from the websites until then. I know I've heard Discovery Streaming recommended how do you use it? I have no idea at all what Destination Math is, anyone used it? Go Quest looks interesting, but I do wonder how well a 6 yr old can answer the questions for differentiated instruction, anyone tried this? I actually paid for Brain Pop through the school but couldn't log in through the iPad so we never used it, does anyone know if you can log in and use on an iPad? I'm not sure if by reading eggs they just mean the reading portion or if it will include access to the other parts. As I mentioned in the other thread DS was never big on it and now he's reading which he wasn't then. Does it start at the beginning or is there a quiz to see where the child is? Is it worthwhile for a student who is reading? I'm not sure if they focus on reading comprehension or something outside of phonics. Reading Eggs BrainPop Discovery Streaming Destination Math Go Quest
  2. Can anyone tell me the main differences (reading/instructional/method- wise) between Reading Eggs and Ooka Island? My son has done a 4 week trial of Reading Eggs and loved it. Now he is ending a 2 week trial of Ooka Island. We'd like to buy a subscription to one or the other since he loves them both and I've seen progress with his reading skills since he started using the programs. He started writing and spelling words on his own after starting Reading Eggs and after 2 days of Ooka Island was able to whiz through a workbook page (LOE Foundations) on last sound in a word (a skill that he had been having trouble with for a long time). Has anyone used both or studied both programs and figured out the main differences? As far as what content it focusses more on, methods, etc.
  3. Since my DS has been enjoying ABCMouse.com, I decided to let him try Reading Eggs to see if he'd enjoy that better since he's been a little bored with ABCM. Then he tried the samples of Looney Toons ClickN Read and Headsprout, he seems to like them all the same but I'm not sure which would be the best. Before I get too much futher ahead of myself, let me give some background, he's 33 months and the RE placement test put him on Map 7, Level 60. Now, I know he has both letter and sound identification down plus knowledge of some sight words. He can sound out book 1 of the first set of BOB books. He can read/spell apple plus other words, knows his colors, shapes, numbers to 20 and so on. He plays other games on my tablet and will intentionally pick all the wrong answers because he can (he's that type of child already lol). I expected him to be able to skip a few levels but not half the program. He's already advanced to level 61. Has anyone had this happen and have the results be wrong? I'm just concerned it was a lot of lucky guessing. I'm not forcing him to learn to read, he won't sit still for more than a few pages in any book with me asking him to read the words he knows or even if I'm just reading it. Nor are we doing any formal reading programs yet. I'm just in favor of edutainment (love that term) over letting him just watch anything on TV or destroy my house while I'm working. Plus he is letter obessed and he "spells" as he calls it, which is reading off each letter on whatever he's looking at. Anything that keeps him quiet and busy for 30 minutes is a sanity-saver. So if I'm going to invest money into another program to keep him entertained, I'd like one that will best assist him with his reading skills. I do plan on using this same program to assist my dyslexic SD (8) over this summer too in conjuntion with Dancing Bears. WHEW, that was more information than I was expecting it to be. So really I'm just wondering what program to pick as on the surface they all seem to work and have their advanges. Thanks in advance for your advice.
  4. I'm not sure how long the discount will last but you can get a one year subscription to Reading Eggs for $31.45 by entering mayday into the Discount Code section of the shopping cart. Once the code expires the price is $37.00. While not as good as the people who got it for less than $20 but it is better than full price. Just wanted to share should anyone else be shopping for it now. http://halfoffdepot.com/houston/catalog/product/view/id/8903/s/one-year-subscription-to-reading-eggs.html
  5. A friend just sent me this, and I spent the last 15 min or so entering all these for both of my littles. 6. A friend recommended the website Reading Eggs to us and how much their children loved it. There is a 2 week free trial so we signed up for it. I do like that it has a pretest so it doesn't start them on material that is too easy and she loves that you earn golden eggs, that you build a little world and advance through levels and all of that stuff. The problem is that it is too repetitious. It really annoys her since she is a very quick learner. It would be one thing if it checked her knowledge of the topic again later or in a different form but when you do one activity it has you do the same activity over and over before moving to the next game. For example one of the activities is to click on the word, "and" and every time she does it does a little animation. Well it has her do this 6 times or so before it moves on to the next game and it is like that with every activity. If you are kicking a soccer into the goal and they tell you to choose the word "it", then she has to kick the ball into the goal "it" 5 or 6 times before moving on, etc. She loves the concept of the game and the games itself but get really annoyed by doing the same thing over and over. Does anyone know of a similar fun reading game that reinforces what they're learning in a fun way? She loves to play on the computer and I'd rather her play something educational. I'd prefer a game that has a free trial of some sort. If you have a child that needs a lot of repetition your child would love this game. My daughter is a very quick learner so stuff like that irritates her. If you want to check it out yourself just sign up and make an account for yourself. I set up my own profile and played with it awhile and had it start me on their furthest level for starters by answering the pretest questions all correctly and I found it annoying for all the repetition as well.
