  1. Hi, I'm wondering what suggestions people have for a fun, engaging resources to teach better reading and note taking skills to a young high schooler. My son, who is quite bright, struggles a lot with attention and doesn’t listen/engage very well in co-op classes or retain what he reads. He did pretty well before content became more difficult and time consuming, but is really struggling now. Any suggestions in how to strengthen these skills in ways that would be palatable to a teen boy who would rather not be doing schoolwork? ;)
  2. I would like to take an informal poll of what interventions that you have tried that have helped your learning challenged child with reading comprehesnion. It would be helpful to know the sex and age of the child, the diagnosis of the child, the name of the intervention, the type of intervention, how long you did the intervention, and the overall effect (none//mild/moderate/high), including any grade level changes in comprehension. So for an example: Boy, age 11, moderate autism, Lindamoodbell Visualizing and Verbalizing, intensive one on one in a center, 6 months, moderate gains, i.e
  3. A recent standardized test revealed a weakness in my dd's reading comprehension. Read a passage, answer a few questions. I've been loving Sadlier's Grammar and Writing for Standardized Tests, and I'm hoping there is something out there like that but for reading comprehension.
  4. I just had my daughters (11 and 12 yo) read from Hakim's History of US, the chapter about the Battle of Gettysburg. It's probably 5 pages with several illustrations and sidebars. I asked them to tell me about the battle, and their recall was less than impressive. "A lot of people died."   5. I've been reevaluating what I want to work on with my son for the upcoming year, which I'm considering like a K4. One of the things I want to do is read books to him (of course) and I want to use that experience to develop his reading comprehension and critical thinking, which I feel like I haven't done enough of. So I looked at the FIAR sample, and it is definitely not what I want - I'm not interested in tangential subjects, crafty things, etc. - although I will make use of the read five times thing, because I think that's brilliant. I am homeschooling my 3 boys ages 10,8, 6, all with summer/ early fall birthdays, and for all of them I opted to count the fall they were 5 as the beginning of kindergarten, so my now 8 1/2 year old should be in the middle of 3rd grade. He reads fairly well, but gets very frustrated if he can't figure out a word immediately, starts whining, "I don't know!" and quits trying. He is supposed to try to sound it out, then write it down, and then ask for help if he still hasn't figured it out.
