  1. My son is not a natural speller, which I discovered while using ABeka's 1st grade spelling. We switched to AAS and used levels 1-4. Then this year in 4th grade, I have him using R&S's grade 4 spelling. I needed something independent, since I have many little ones who need my time as well, and I just didn't feel I had time to devote to his spelling as well with something so teacher-intensive as AAS.   3. This year my older two girls, ages 11 & 13, started R&S English 8 & 6, respectively. This is our first year with R&S. We finished FLL4 a couple of years ago, and haven't done a lot with grammar since then. Well, we realized very quickly that R&S 8 was way over the 13 yo's head (and mine too! ack!). She's now in grammar-limbo (having stopped R&S in Oct/Nov). My 11 yo is appropriately challenged in R&S 6. I'm concerned/curious now for a couple of reasons: 1.   4. My soon-to-be 10 year old son is on the downhill side of "fourth" grade. I'm looking to start more formal, organize LA with him. He is beginning to make progress in AAS with works and dictation, but other than that, he has had little formal grammar or writing. Lots of narration practice, though. Is there a placement guide for CAP W&R or do all start with Book 1? I'm concerned Fables will be too boring for him. Does anyone have other recommendations for a bright kid who reads well, but dislikes school and is easily bored?
  5. I've been looking through all the threads on R&S vs. Saxon and since it came up in a discussion this morning with my husband, I'm wondering when it's best to test out of R&S and into Saxon? I've read that some people do grades 1-3 with R&S and start Saxon at grade 4. And some say to stick with R&S through the 8th grade and then start Saxon in 9th. My oldest will be in the fourth grade next year so I'm trying to decide what's best?? Any thoughts?
  6. I am currently looking for a spelling program to go along with our R&S phonics, reading and English. The spelling was so awful when we tried it with R&S so we'll be using something different. I bought AAS and was impressed with the approach to teaching spelling but unimpressed with the cost and all the fluff that it involved. I can't keep up with it lol I've looked at How To Teach Spelling and Phonetic Zoo, each running into less then mediocre reviews. Are there any others you would recommend to me?   7. I have been doing R&S with my 8 yr old son since well, forever. He's going to be in third grade next year and I'm thinking about switching him to Teaching Textbooks. I have heard good things from my friend who also has been using it since first grade. Any other reviews would be helpful (good or bad) before we jump in with both feet. Thanks! Kyla
  8. This is a follow-up to the thread I posted on recommendations for a spelling program. I just realized today, that I am teaching two different subjects. I bought the R&S English 2 program which included the Phonics also. Since they look EXACTLY the same, I thought they were the same thing until today when I realized the two different teachers manuals and the workbook differences. So now, we have English (which is mostly sentence structures) and phonics (which is letters and their sounds, vowels and so on).... My questions is: Do I still need something for spelling?If so, should
  9. I have an almost 12yo DD who finished R&S books 2 & 3 in grade 2. When we moved from the US to Germany in '09, a lot of stuff just fell by the wayside. She never finished the 4th book, but we did go through all of the Bk 4 writing exercises in 5th grade. Last year (6th grade), I was so overwhelmed with family issues that I let grammar slip almost entirely. She is now entering 7th grade, and I want to pick back up with R&S. I am the type who wants to go through book 5, then 6, and so on...but she is balking at working through the 5th book b/c she knows it's 5th grade. WWYD?
  10. Hi all, My ds is finishing up VIE 6th grade & I am planning for next year & I have some questions. DS will be in 7th grade can he come from VIE 6 and transition nicely into R&S 7?   11. How do you use Rod & Staff Grammar? Option 1: Every year, completing one level and going on to the next until you finish 8th grade? Option 2: Taking two years to do one program? If you do this, do you skip levels, or just go to the next one and not use every year (do you stop at level 6)? Option 3: Do a whole level one year, do something else the next year (maybe concentrate on writing), then the 3rd year do another R&S level? Like 3rd grade R&S Grammar 3, then 4th writing, then 5th R&S Grammar 5, then 6th WWS? Or something like that? Option 4: Other... P
