  1. I have a junior in high school who is a musician and composer. She'll probably be applying next year to music composition programs. I am trying to help her put together a portfolio to take with her when she visits colleges. It would contain a resume of her music work, along with printouts of all her compositions. I would also like to include programs of some of her more important choral performances, e.g. the ones in Carnegie Hall. I tried putting the programs in sheet protectors, but they are too flimsy for the weight of the programs. What have other people done to display performance programs? Please give me details!
  2. Hi! I have a question for anyone who might have experience with portfolios and the VP self paced classes. How do you create samples for your child's portfolio and for the evaluator? Thanks for any advice!
  3. I'm looking for some btdt thoughts on compiling a sort of resume for my DS's math journey so far. We might use this for applications to math summer camps and so on as well as for other math opportunities that come his way and tweak and polish as he gets older. He has started compiling one but doesn't know what to say lol. He is generally a modest child. Although I don't want him to sell himself short, I also don't want to give him pointers that will be an oversell if you know what I mean. We want to stay truthful, accurate but also representative of how much time he spends on something math-related out of choice (usually at least half of our "official homeschooling time" daily and a big percentage of his leisure time). Some questions: Follow a job resume format? E.g. think of math categories, then list books he has used, years he has used them? I suggested categories like algebra, geometry, number theory etc. but he wants to list them as textbooks, math circle, other books, contests He is not a contest loving child and currently, does not have a very high score on the AMC8 (at least compared to so many contest-loving kids) because he ran out of time but he could solve the problems himself later. Should he mention that he took the contest despite the not so impressive results? He spends a lot of time researching math ideas and coming up with mathy things in his many notebooks. Include copies of one or two of those with some kind of description of his thoughts? Can I include other math-related subjects he is doing although they are not purely math? E.g. physics, mathematical logic He will also include some proofs he has written for geometry. Can these be handwritten? He doesn't have the best handwriting atm lol and hasn't mastered LaTeX yet. The best representation will probably be through a video of him explaining something...but do summer camp/ higher math opportunities' coordinators look at videos? Doesn't seem like they would have the time. I do understand that some camps will have qualifying exams instead of a portfolio/ resume-based application, but I feel that this resume-building exercise will be helpful in more ways than one. If not for classes and camps, at least for himself to see how far he has come from working so hard. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
  4. My daughter is finally interested in college. She has a good chance at a scholarship from the art department. She will need to provide a portfolio. What kinds of items should she include? I have been making a list of things I think would work: comics published, painted ceramics, drawings, sketches, colored drawings, paintings, textiles of fabric designs, jewelry, a set design from a play. Most of these would be photographs due to either not having the item anymore or for some of them, it would be easier to have a photograph. Any other ideas or types of work that might be missing?   7. I'm in the process of organizing our new school year, I'm sure I'm not alone. I've got several subjects planned and I had a thought today. How do you document Stem? My girls are part of an ALE here in Washington state (not always my most favorite thing having to document, but when you've had a house on the market for 20m and live 5 hours away and pay rent another place well you take the funding and move forward). This past year I would either take a picture or have the girls real quick write a blurp about it. I'd like to do something more consistent AND I want to document all STEM they do. Built that lego model from plans. Document it! Wrote up plans on how to build a wind mill out of tinker toys. Document it! But How? ANY advice would be welcomed. THANKS!:bigear:

  9. Seeing this a lot and, because we don't use the portfolio option for our requirement here in Ohio (we do testing), I'm a little flustered. Not that I couldn't put one together, but I think our dc's test scores should reflect that they've done the necessary course load. I am surprised that a university has the time and man-power (supposedly) to look through a portfolio in addition to the regular admission materials. Just wondering what everyone's experiences have been!
  10. My ds needs more art skills than I can give him. He's had a drawing class and used books on painting, etc and has come up with some nice pieces. But since he's thinking of going into architecture or landscape architecture, he need more experience and some kind of portfolio. The art teacher has a studio where she usually teaches adults who have more time and money than we do...We have enough for about 12 two hour lessons for the year (things aren't cheap here). She seemed open to whatever we want except seemed to want to push acrylics or oils which I don't think would be at all helpful and would be quite costly.. In order to use that time effectively, I thought that if I give her the plans of what I want him to learn, (he would then come home and work on projects for two weeks) then there wouldn't be, what should we say, dawdling time...Plus then I'd have "course objectives etc" and could give a bit of credit... Has anyone ever done anything similar? Could you help? Of if you have done a course to prepare for such a career, could you give some ideas? Thanks, Joan
