  1. If you snuggle up to a partner in bed? Just wondering what better options there are... It's multi choice and anonymous.
  2. I'm trying to figure out which edition of Harold Jacobs Geometry to buy. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! Debbie
  3. I grew up saying kitty-corner, and recently heard catty-corner for the first time. Apparently the original term was cater-cornered, but I've never heard that. Just curious to know what other people say. I'm originally from the western US, if that makes a difference. And for the curious, here's an explanation of where the terms came from.
  4. So we at Peace Hill Press, having long since mastered the cutting-edge technology of "The Printing Press," and having rapidly come to prominence in this new-fangled "Facebook" thing that "the kids" are always "talkin' about," are seeking ways to enhance our profile on the Internets. Facebook has been telling us that we should create an ad (which would begin appearing on the right side of the Facebook newsfeeds of people who have listed certain interests such as Homeschooling). If you're on Facebook, you've seen such ads appear on the right side of your newsfeed, but do you ever respond to them? Opinions in the office are mixed, ranging from "I never click on those sidebar ads" to "this is an excellent opportunity" to "stop talking about Facebook; I'm busy with an important game of Words With Friends." So we're turning to the wisdom of the Hive Mind. Please let us know your thoughts on the usefulness of Facebook advertising.
  5. what time period are you studying in 2010-11 (or 2010 if you use a calendar year instead of a school year)? ETA This was supposed to be a poll but everything froze and I had to quit out of my browser. I'm going to try again.
  6. I'm kind of, sort of contemplating getting a dish for more channel options. Right now we just have NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS and FOX. We don't watch much TV. There isn't much besides PBS kids that I let my kids watch. I'm now wondering about the options of Nat'l Geographic channel, Discovery, HG TV, etc. But, I'm afraid we'll just watch more TV and I really don't want to do that. So, I'm wondering does having a dish/cable result in more time spent watching TV?
  7. Dh was laughing and marveling at how fast I can type using one hand. I've had lots of practice at that since I'm generally holding a baby. That made me curious to know how many words per minute I can type using just one hand. I found this free online typing test and gave it a whirl. I scored 38 wpm. I think I can beat that but my hand/arm is rather cramped right now, lol. Two-handed I got 92 wpm. :)
  8. What are your thoughts on global warming?
  9. My dh says Hershey is the best. I think he's wrong. What say ye?
  10. Meaning you and you S/O combined and meaning major credit cards, not house loans, car loans, things like Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express. Not your debt, but the open credit.
  11. ok, here is our situation. All family is 500 - 700 miles away. They all expect us to come back for holidays. Only 1 out of 5 siblings ever come to visit us. The majority of family does not hold our Christian beliefs about Christmas. A few siblings and inlaws won't even talk to each other. My sil doesn't like my dh. Two of the cousins I would rather not even have my dc around because of their behavior.
  12. Who would you vote for? I am hoping this comes through so people can vote anonymously.
  13. Interesting article from MSNBC Schools not properly preparing kids for life
  14. Have you ever heard the phrase, "That's beast!" (To the best of my understanding, it means something is great in a tough, manly, aggressive kinda way :glare:) The boys use it around here and I am wondering if it is unique to here or if it is used across the U.S.
  15. Aaargh!!! Forgot to check that little poll box. A repeat of the first post: A friend of mine has brought these topics up. He's against them the way he's seen them--in the public schools. A parent who does not watch TV and eschews anything Disney or Pixar, he is outraged that his Gr. 1 dd is bored in school and forced to watch movies such as this, etc. I'm going to include a couple of links he sent me, and his comment was that he thought these were good for preschool or some arts students at a certain Canadian university (obviously, he thinks little of this particular university (in the States you'd call this school a 4 year college.)) I will mention that he'd homeschool if one of them could afford to stay home. I won't give my opinion on all or any of this yet. I'm including a poll, but would love to hear what people have to say on this. His dd is probably gifted, as he is and I think his wife is, too. [http://llk.media.mit.edu/papers/edutainment.pdf http://www.legolearning.net/eng/default.asp?
  16. Are you over 36 and not particularly interested in making friends with mothers who are 28 and younger?
  17. I'm asking for ladies' responses only on this poll so that the results aren't skewed by mixing male and female stats. How tall are you?
  18. Two questions: What is your dh's attitude toward you homeschooling your children? If your dh is not completely supportive, do you think this issue has created a "wedge" in your relationship? I realize the exact wording doesn't work for everyone here....so if you're divorced/remarried, or for the guys here, feel free to answer this in the way that best fits your family situation! ETA: I just realized that this discussion could have the potential to go down a path that's against board rules: "No Spouse Bashing The Internet (and this site in particular) is not the appropriate place to complain about your husband (or wife) or to ask for marital counseling. Call a friend instead." That's not my intention at all! So please keep that in mind when answering, so that we can respect the intent of her guidelines.
  19. We're trying to decide how to finish off the old house to sell. Painted shoe moulding will be less costly and faster. When I researched last year for the same decision to be made on the new to us house, I learned that there is no right or wrong way to do this - personal preference was the answer. Dh wants to make sure we don't do anything that will detract from the sale of the house. I thought a poll might be fun to see how the majority of homes represented here on the boards have been done. Thanks for participating!
  20. Besides popping in here every 5 minutes to chat, that is. I'll start, though I am sure you can guess where I am, lol. Yep, as usual, I am down in the studio. I am jamming to music, keeping the woodstove burning nice and hot (it's cold out, and it helps the gesso to dry faster), and preparing substrates- sanding and applying gesso. IT isn't thoughtful work, so I am having a Mike's. They are so pricey in our area that this is a real treat- every now and again, dh brings me one. Yummy. Dinner is in the oven, kids are finishing schoolwork, and dh is out running an errand for work tomorrow. What are you doing? Is there something good on the telly? Reading a good book, playing games with the keddunks, studying, or doing something more unusual? Your turn......
