  1. I'm finishing up AAS3 with dd8 very soon and was planning on starting Phonetic Zoo, Level A. My reasoning for PZ is that it's auditory (what dd needs) and independent (what I need want). I purchased PZ and now I'm doubting. The words look hard, even though IEW and everybody else says that completion of AAS3 prepares a student for starting PZ. Although she is on the young side - middle of 2nd grade vs. 3rd grade as IEW recommends. We've really enjoyed our time with AAS, and dd was sad to learn that we won't be continuing anymore. I know that's not a reason to stick with AAS...she very well could love PZ even more... Could I complete AAS4 with her and move on after that? Is that overkill? I don't want to accelerate too fast but also want her to start having some independence. Thoughts? Anybody out there complete AAS4 and then start PZ?

I'm so excited that I found the Start up A kit for Phonetic Zoo, with B cd's as well, at my homeschool store yesterday all for $65! :party: I did notice on the Phonetic Zoo Word Cards cover it shows that the copyright is 1999-2002.......Does this program change at all each year or is the 2002 date when this set was bought?
  3. could someone please explain to me how this works? My understanding is that the child listens to the cd where they give the word, the child spells it on paper, they give the next word and so on, then at the end of the lesson the words are spelled back to the child. Does the child then cross of missed words and write the correct spelling next to it? Do they study the words before the next day? My child would not write the corrections very quickly, does it give them enough time to do this? Also, are they expected to get the entire list correct two times in a row, even if they only missed a few of the words on that list, before they move on to the next list? My 11 yod needs help with spelling. i am wondering if this will help her. thanks, Tracy
  4. ok. i just purchased this for my 4th and 3rd grader. i thought it might be a tad hard for my 3rd grader.... but my 4th grader is already struggling bad with it! shes gotten to lesson 4 but these words are EXTREMELY hard for her. and she hasnt had much problems spelling before this... she just wants to do it more independent. the program itself is perfect, but the words just to hard and im afraid she will get discouraged and start to hate spelling. any thoughts or input appreciated!:001_smile:
  5. So it's that time of year when I start to evaluate and decide what to change in the coming year. Spelling needs to change. We started the year with Sequential Spelling, and while my (mildly dyslexic) DS did well day to day, none of it was translating to his writing. He writes in a phonetic way (so could is cood), and his spelling is very influenced by how he pronounces words (so always is alwees). My DH proposed that we help DS type, so that he can see all the red underlining as he misspells and learn to use spell check. We found, however, that spell check rarely has the correct option, as DS's spellings are so crazy. Really poor speller... So I'm looking into programs. I think DS would benefit from learning spelling rules (he's a Why? kid). I would love to have the freedom of Phonetic Zoo, but I can see that AAS's multi-sensory approach might really help things stick in his brain. PZ is also more than I want to pay for spelling, but if it worked, and it was something else he could do on his own... Please share your experiences. Thanks again,
  6. My dd11 is a horrible speller. We have tried many things. We are having problems now that she is older finding a program that is not to little kid like. I had her doing All About Spelling. She hates doing the titles because she thinks it is babyish. I have tried just giving her lists of words to memorize. That doesn't work. She can read just fine just can't spell!:) A friend from church swears by Phonetic Zoo. It is very expensive. So, wanted to know what others think of this program. Thanks
  7. My ds 10 talks non-stop, and I suspect he would really ejoy an auditory program. My 7 yo dd's also seem to retain what they watched or listened to so much more, so I am considering this. I never really knew about it until I heard about it at the TWSS DVD. Has this program worked for you and if so, how independently can the child work?
