  1. Does anyone have experience to compare using "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading" to "Spell to Read and Write"? I've used the OPG with ease and success with my first two, but my third child is struggling at age 6 1/2, while the fourth child, age 4, is advancing quickly. Child #3 definitely learns differently, but is so bright. He didn't start talking until he was 3 and then in complete sentences. Everything else is developmentally on track now, except the slow start to reading. He gets it, but asks SO many questions about rules and exceptions and wants to know the "WHY" behind everything in language arts and physics. We are at Lesson 96 in OPG after 2 years plus of teaching with lots of review. I'm waffling on whether or not we just need to drill, drill, drill, and review more with the OPG or abandon ship and try a new method. I have the SRW book and cards and feel slightly overwhelmed at the complexity as compared to the OPG, although it certainly looks like it should work! Any advice? Thank you! Lisa
  2. My son is an ok reader but still struggles - he learned to read in PS Kindergarten. New words, sounding things out, and spelling are difficult for him. I was thinking of starting OPGTR with him to help out but he thinks it's too easy. Thoughts? On a side note, we're doing WWE1 and just finished FLL1 - that is going well. :) Thanks!
  3. Inspired by Catholic Mommy's chart for filling in lessons and our library's summer reading program, I made a set of "reading trails" for my children to fill in when they finish a lesson in OPG. You can find them (separated by the Sections in the book) on Google Docs (Word Documents): Section 3-6, Section 7-12, Section 13-14, Section 15-16, and Section 17-21. Now my question. M-girl reads beautifully, however new multi-syllable words occasionally trip her up. We've been trudging through OPG still back in the silent consonant section ... this is not remotely challenging (or interesting) to her. I know where her difficulties are, does it make sense to skip forward to the section where the multi-syllable words starts? I had her read the review lesson immediately prior to that section and she read it with no problem.
  4. I have started to teach my DD to read with the OPGTR. She knows all the letters down flat no problem. (she turns 5 next month) But she is at a stand still with putting 3 letter words together. I know that she can do it, SHE knows that she can do it, but still she sits with me and refuses to try. I really try not to push her, we don't do more that 15 min a session, but I do require her to read some words every day. We read books all the time with joy! Sonlight users. Anyway is she just to young? Not sure if I should just drop it or keep trying a bit each day. We also read BOB books and read words on the fridge. Has anyone successfully gotten past lesson 32 in the OPG with a 4/5 year old? TIA!!! Amanda
  5. Hey all. We have been through way too many phonics programs already. My favorite has been Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading, but he absolutely hates it. I love how the book is organized and new words are gradually added after the lesson on how to decode those words is completed. We are currently using Modern Curr Press Phonics A. My 6yo really likes the workbook approach, but I am very unhappy with the overall program. It doesn't seem progressive and throws in words that he couldn't possibly have learned yet. For example... the words "little, pretty, flies, think" are in a story he is supposed to read when they have only gone over three letter words. Anyway, I am wondering (hoping) someone can suggest something that uses a workbook format that also teaches *progressive* phonics. Thanks so much!
  6. I was wondering if someone who has used this program could tell me if my son is ready for this or not... he's just 3, and loves to do school. Usually sits with big brother (5yo kinder) doing activity bags or kumon type books for the entire school time. Has a long attention span, loves doing letters, numbers, school type stuff. he recognizes all upper and lower case letters (has for over 6 months now) and is beginning to connect them to sounds they make. Just this week he's been able to pick out B words, and rhyming words. He can write his name, and think of other words that start with the same letter as his name. He has lots of things memorized of his brothers schoolwork just by sitting at the table with us (like long A, FLL poems). Now I don't plan to start anything until another month or so as we have a move coming up and I can't spare the planning/implementing time right now. But as soon as we are settled, I know my 3yo will be starving for something structured to do. I know that many of you will say don't bother doing anything formal, but that's not really my question. I know he needs/wants it and if at any time it seems to be frustrating we'll stop. What I'm asking is are his skills ready for Ordinary Parents' guide or should I stick with something like letter of the week level?
  7. I'm sure this has probably been discussed before ad nauseum. Forgive me. For those of you with experience, though, which of these two do you recommend and why?
