  3. Please help! :) My daughter will be starting high school in the next few months, and I am just not sure about what to do for our World History program. I have narrowed it down to 4...after researching just about every program out there. If you have any experience with these programs, please let me know what you loved and what you didn't like about them. We are doing Notgrass for middle school World History and my daughter enjoys it more than some other things we tried. She LOVES reading and writing, and so this is what I keep coming back to for her high school. I love the literature included and that each week she is to write an essay. I also like that it's a simple, one year world history program, and won't take years to do. History Revealed seems like my Ultimate History Program. I love the foundation of it, how it encourages the child to dig deep and study what they are interested in. I love that it's got lots of project ideas and that it covers each topic pretty in depth. I worry though that my daughter isn't a really motivated learner. She loves to read and write, but if she's not engaged in it, she will hand me garbage just to be done. I don't know if she will dive deep or just remain on the surface and do bare minimum to get done. If she approaches it that way, will the whole benefit of this program be lost on her??? I don't yet have any experience with the Classical Historian, other than it sounds great. Cathy Duffy rates it very highly, in her top 102 picks (Notgrass and History Revealed didn't make the list). I love the idea of starting a unit with a question and having her read and research in order to write an essay that makes her really analyze her answer. I also love the idea of doing Socratic Discussions as a main part of her history program. I am in process of learning how to do the Socratic Dialogue and think it's a fabulous way to learn. We LOVED Winter Promise for elementary US history, and so it is always in the back of my mind to try. Their Middle/High school level American History Programs look very intriguing to me (American Crossing and American Culture). I think we learned more in that elementary history class than any other program we have done....but there were many more books in that program than the high school ones. I just can't decide! Please share your experiences!!!! Thanks!
  4. I just recently got this for use next year and thought I'd post my initial impressions since I couldn't find a lot of reviews when I was doing my own research. I finally decided on it after months of looking at different options for world history, including BJU, Abeka, PAC, Spielvogel, and A Short History of Western Civilization. I had looked at Notgrass at conventions in the past, and it just didn't do anything for me. But I kind of felt crowded into it after ruling out the above options. Abeka and BJU just looked like very surface treatment and I worried about retention. Plus I was afraid they might have too much of a Baptist perspective. PAC looked too light, Spielvogel too dry. I actually ordered a cheap used copy of ASHoWC, but the copy came heavily highlighted (what's the point of having so MUCH highlighting?) and I didn't like the way they handled religion. Plus I was thinking maybe we should have some non-western info too. So back I went to Notgrass, figuring that since most of their reviews were positive, it couldn't be that bad. :) The text is in two big hardcover volumes, with one hardcover volume of original writings as a supplement. Volume one is ancients and medievals, volume two is Renaissance to modern times. It is divided up into 30 units, each one containing five daily lessons. The last of the five is always a Bible study. My thoughts: - The text itself isn't as . . . rich? rigorous? as I had hoped. I would be reluctant to use this above 10th grade. - The print is large, clear, and easy to read. Lots of color illustrations. No timelines - I was disappointed that such a large portion of volume one is biblical history. We are CC and believe biblical history is accurate but we are also well-versed in it due to years of books, Sunday School, etc., and I'd rather the time were spent on more unfamiliar cultures such as Egypt, Assyria, Greece, etc. For instance, only one lesson is spent on ancient Egypt, and maybe 15 lessons on biblical/Hebrew history. - The tone is definitely Christian, but not strongly one denomination. Every once in a while I would think, "wow, this is really getting preachy," but then I realized that was always in the Bible study chapters. You could always skip those chapters and use the program purely for history. I was going to skip them at first but then I realized DS does need some Bible study somewhere and we may as well kill two birds with one stone. - I like the output suggestions. There is Bible memory, supplementary reading in literature or the original sources book, and a choice of three projects for every unit, similar to Oak Meadow. One of the projects is always a writing assignment. The others may be art, research, volunteering, interviewing, making a video, etc. We are not using the Student Review book, which includes questions as well as literary analysis for the supplemental literature. We will use the lit for extra reading only, no formal follow-up. DS is taking a separate lit course. - I LOVE the original sources book, In Their Words, and how they weave the readings into the program. It is the same quality binding with clear print and color illustrations. It has a really nice selection of documents, speeches, poems, stories, and hymns. It would be worth getting even if you do not plan on using Notgrass. - The course is pretty Western civilization-ish. Other cultures are only touched on in the first volume, and take up only three or four out of the 15 units in the second. Maybe I can follow up with another review once we've used it for awhile.
  5. Just a little background...I had all of the kids plans up and running. Working decently but taking 8-9 hours of my time per day to just get school done with my 5. Around Christmas I found out I had 2 tumors - one inside my brain and one on the outside near it. Fortunately, it's benign and slow growing. Had the outer tumor removed and have, finally, recovered (for the most part). The other one is in a hard place to remove, so I am learning to live with it, for now, and working on trying to shrink it. So, all that has led to some major changes in our home and school. The kids got very little school done during the 3+ months this was going on. We are just now really starting back with everything. The 7th graders were able to work more independently but they were having to help with everything else while I was down and weren't able to get much past their Language Arts, Math and music done. I have figured out the boys - put them (pk/k, 2nd & 4th) into MFW-ECC and their math and language arts has stayed the same. The girls are where I am stumped. They are 7th grade. Currently, we are doing the following: History/Geography: BF-Early American & World Lang. Arts: Growing With Grammar 6, Lightening Lit 7, Jump-in Writing Math: their own grade appropriate/level appropriate thing Science: various reading and going thru physical science encyclopedia electives: 2 instruments each, Spanish, cooking OK, so on paper it's not too bad...BUT they don't like the lack of a spine, they are having a hard time keeping up with all the different writing assignments from history AND Light lit AND Jump-in, and they aren't liking Science too much (but are troopers). So, after much thought and reflection I decided I needed to make things easier for them to get thru this year without starting over again. I have done the following: History/Geography: Adding in Notgrass America the Beautiful for them to read with the BF Early American & World History (They have NEVER had American History, so I am really trying to bring out that focus without losing the world context.) They really liked these at the HS conference. They both want to continue with the BF as well - they love the thought-provoking questions and the global context of history. Lang Arts: Continuing with GWG7, Leaving my more creative writer in Jump-in as she loves the program, putting my other child in Essentials in Writing 7. Lightening Lit - want to finish but maybe stagger? not sure Math: Same Science: putting them in Apologia General Science w/ labs and letting them get used to structured and non-mom-directed science. electives: same since I don't really do much with these. ****So Here's where I need the help****** Is it too much to do both BF and Lightening LIt? They like to read, but I don't want to overwhelm them with essays (unless that's normal for middle school). I also don't want to do overkill on any one thing. I want to them to work efficiently and, frankly, don't want to invest in something that isn't needed. Now, to the rest of my frustration: 8th-12th. I need some help thinking this thru - at least with the next couple of years worth. I figure the rest of high school will be set with the pattern I establish in the next 2 years. I will just keep going from there. They really like Beautiful Feet and like how its laid out (except for the lack of a spine, which is why we are using Notgrass). They would like to keep on with BF BUT I am not sure how to do that and get thru US & World history thru 20th century. I was hoping to complete the "intro" years with them before high school so we can take 11th and 12th to delve into US & World on a more mature level. If I keep going with BF, they will be in the high school US & World for 8th and 9th grade. Then 10th-12th would be ancients-wherever and Govt/economics. That sounds like a weird setup to me. What I am thinking about doing is finishing out BF for this year and then just continuing on with the Notgrass Jr High history and just add in Kingfisher History Encyclopedia for the World content and add in some readers from Sonlight Core H. OR***** Should I just use the Notgrass with extra readers for reinforcement, set aside BF Early American and then use it for High school? If I did that, I would then do the following for History: 7th & 8Th - Notgrass America the Beautiful & Uncle Sam & You (together), Light. Lit 7 9th-BF Ancients/ Notgrass World History, Light Lit 10th - BF Medieval/ Notgrass World History, Light Lit 11th - BF Early American & World, start on US & World/ Notgrass Us History, Light Lit 12th - BFUS & World/ Notgrass US history, Light LIt Also, I have considered MFW for high school. I am even ok with not going back and doing ancients again - we've already done it twice and already done all the compare and contrast of ancients civilizations and bible Old Testament, so ... I KNOW I am making this harder than it needs to be! I know this is probably not worth the headache I currently have. I just can't seem to get my mind "unstuck" with the girls planning and I don't want to start over mid-year. My main goal is to give them some kind of overview of us history before high school history. We meant to do that last year, but got stuck on middle ages and renaissance era. Please, if I haven't overwhelmed you, do you have any ideas or suggestions? Things to consider? ways to simplify?
  6. I like VP self paced a lot. But, he learned how to work the system and I'm not sure how much he retained from it. It may be getting a little young for him? Also, he may need to visually *see* the text. I'm noticing that he is very visual. (the audio spelling program did not work well for him, for example) So, I could either have him do Notgrass America the Beautiful by itself or combine the two. Would that be overkill? Thanks!
  7. I desperately need some input on a new world history curric for DS. Creating my own curric is not an option, and DH wants it to be Bible-based, so that leaves me with either Notgrass or BJU. Will those of you that have used these currics please chime in with your opinions? I'll need to buy soon, esp if I go with Notgrass. Some items to note: DS thinks he'd prefer BJU b/c it's more colorful than Notgrass. He uses BJU for grammar and is familiar with their format. I already have Notgrass Government for future use. I don't know if one provides stronger history than the other. I found Notgrass used for $50ish, but only retail for BJU. I can borrow all but 2 of the books for Notgrass' additional reading from the library. I don't know what BJU includes for additional reading or writing assignments, since the online samples are not the greatest. Here's what we've already got scheduled for the year in regards to reading, research, and writing: English Lit Grammar - BJU W&G 8 (1 chapter/2 weeks, all year) NaNoWriMo YWP - prewriting workbook (Oct), writing (Nov), editing (2 week blocks, Jan-Mar) The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - vocab, write a new fantasy in the same style and tone as the original (1 wk, Dec) The Outsiders - vocab, book/movie analysis worksheet (2 wks, Jan) The Taming of the Shrew - vocab, discussion, short essay (2 wks, Feb) Animal Farm & Fahrenheit 451 - vocab, discussion, movies, and a compare/contrast paper between the books and today's society (2-4 weeks, Mar-Apr) Edgar Allan Poe unit study - variety of stories, poems, assignments (TBD, Apr-May) Four "free reading" books of his choice (no discussion) [*]Earth Science - each topic includes research and presentation or paper (all year, working at his own pace, no more than 1wk/project) his birthstone (he's starting this today) a natural disaster in recent history modern techniques to prevent natural disasters modern area of astronomical study environmentalist groups and how they operate (opinion paper) corporations and environmental practices controversial issue to debate My biggest concern is whether his current english and science currics combined with Notgrass would be "too much". He's just broken through a major mental block and things are clicking better, but I don't really know at this point whether Notgrass would be overwhelming or if he could juggle it without too much difficulty. He struggles with writing so I don't want to bog him down, but he really does need to work on improving his writing skills. So will the Hive please chime in?
  8. Hi~ I'm needing recommendations for a trigonometry text to go along w/ my son's foray into trigonometry via Khan Academy. Any suggestions? Also, we are needing a condensed American History study for his last year. Sonlight is too expensive (even used) right now, though we both love it. He has done a couple of Notgrass curriculums, but would like to steer clear of them for this history course, if at all possible. Any words of wisdom from those who have been there and done that?   9. We are starting 8th grade and I am already planning out my high school curriculum. This coming year we are using Notgrass America the Beautiful. For 9th, 10th and 11th we will continue with Notgrass World and American HIstory. Notgrass website stated you can give 1 credit for History, Literature, and Bible. (1 credit for World History for 9th, and 1 Credit for American Literature for 10th) 11th grade is 1/2 yr Government and 1/2 year Civics. So that would be 1 credit total. Is it necessary to continue to do literature and analysis for 11 and 12th grade, and if so what do you recommend? Or what did you use? We would do a full year of writing still right through high school, plus vocabulary. I would still like to continue with literature though. What says you? ETA: I am a little confused about assigning credits for English. Do I just list English 9 with one credit, or do I list it as English composition-1 credit;American Literature-1 credit(equalling 2 credits???).
  10. Is there anyone who could outline pros/cons of each? My dd will be in 7th gr. next year, and I feel like I need to make a firm decision on which route to take. I'm most attracted to Notgrass for h.s....I'd really like her to have more independence. But is it as rich as AO or Omnibus? We're currently using TQ/SCM for history and AO for lit. I want rich literature, Biblical worldview teaching....and I don't want to have to read everything myself:) Thanks for any input! Blessings, Gina
  11. I am trying to find U.S. History for 9th and 10th graders. I have seen several of you mention Notgrass so I went to their website. It says there are 150 daily lessons which includes text, reading and writing assignments. The site also says depending on your student that they may require 2-3 hours for each daily lesson. HOW on earth are we suppose to allot that much time to history with all our other subjects?!?! I think that is a bit much. Any comments and advice for U.S. History? I have also heard good things about MFW but I after looking at their website I wonder if it is heavy on the religion. We are Christian and I am not opposed to a Christian approach but don't want it heavy in text. KWIM?

I can't afford to buy the whole Core 100, but would love to have my son read some of the books along with A History of Us and/or Notgrass Exploring America, both of which we can borrow for this year. :) Which literature selections do you (or your children) think are the best choices? I know they've changed some of them for this year, so you can choose from either the current or previous Core 100. Notgrass has some literature, too, which I think we can borrow as well, so if you are familiar with their selections you could choose from those, too. TIA!
  13. American history. We are just finishing Year 4 of a history rotation, so we've finished up Modern World History. I've gone lightly on the last 30 years of American History, expecting to hit it hard next year. I'm looking at Notgrass American History. I can think of two things that I might do for the lit component, since many folks seems to think the lit component is pretty light and/or poorly representative. This is for an 11th grade guy who is dyslexic, and reads decently, but with a lot of effort. Option 1) We haven't had any literary analysis, so I'm thinking of doing Windows on the World first semester, and *just* reading or listening to the lit selections in Notgrass, ie., not planning on doing much in depth with them, just reading. Second semester doing the one semester BJU American Lit with videos. I'm happy with their textbook and the teacher--it is not inspiring, but is more than adequate in covering the body of lit. Option 2) We could do Lit on our own, and cover poetry in more depth (remember ds had asked about studying poetry?), cover WOW in the first semester, then beef up the lit. by changing the selections to books that were better representative of American authors, rather than choosing books that primarily illustrated life during the times being studied. this would be a departure from our "unit study" approach to history all along. Here are the items I'm having difficulty with from the Notgrass selections: 1) I think of Little Women and Christy as pretty long for him, and not necessarily representative of the important "movements" of American Lit. 2) Notgrass scheduled Uncle Tom's Cabin, Frederick Douglass, and Booker T. Washington. The bios seem somewhat repetitive, although I haven't read them in years, so perhaps I'm off base. 3) Other selections seem fun, but hardly representative of great American Lit. Sigh...and I'm pretty much a lit illiterate. So, here's where I could use input. If you were to go with Option 2, above, what literature would you schedule as "must not be missed" lit selections? Please keep in mind, that while my guy has a willing heart, books that simply plod or are heavily introspective will probably not be a good fit. He's just not there yet. I'm going to go reread Walden later this summer with N. in mind, but I suspect that we will be reading excerpts from Thoreau. :) Thanks for your input! valerie
