  1. Hi, I'm wondering what suggestions people have for a fun, engaging resources to teach better reading and note taking skills to a young high schooler. My son, who is quite bright, struggles a lot with attention and doesn’t listen/engage very well in co-op classes or retain what he reads. He did pretty well before content became more difficult and time consuming, but is really struggling now. Any suggestions in how to strengthen these skills in ways that would be palatable to a teen boy who would rather not be doing schoolwork? ;)
  2. Hello all, Please someone tell me that I am not the only one with a child that says they cannot take notes. My husband says that he understands because if he takes notes while listening or reading it stops his train of thought. Any ideas as to how to teach ds? Dh is no help, he says he's not good at taking notes either. ; ) Thanks in advance! :bigear:
  3. http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/cornelllined/ I have been trying these out at meetings at work, and I love them. They really do help me make sense of my notes later on. I couldn't find a spiral notebook of them at the big U bookstore, so I printed them from the above site. (Pardon if I'm the last living boardie to learn about these.)
  4. Is this a skill you teach and if so how do you go about it? Ds is pretty good about notes from a text, but I have not yet had him take notes from a lecture. I'm looking at several lectures I'd like to try for next year, he really enjoys listening to lectures in general, and I'm considering trying to get him to take some notes... but I'm also afraid of killing his enjoyment, kwim? How do you address this, if you do?
  5. I confess that, besides the basic notetaking my kids learned via IEW, I have been remiss in teaching them how to take notes from longer, more challenging sources or from lectures. My three oldest have all gone on to private school for gr 12, the two oldest on to college also, and somehow they have all managed to do very well academically--but I hang my head in shame nonetheless. Son #3 will be home next year for a gap year before post-secondary education kicks in and I'm wondering if I shouldn't seize the opportunity to ground him more solidly in those basic study skills which he will need later (and I can be preparing to teach those skills as well to son #4). I'n somewhat familiar with the Cornell system of notetaking as well as IEW's advanced notetaking techniques; any others that you all would recommend? Any other study skills you'd suggest as vital for students heading off to college?
  6. Does anyone have a system for teaching a student how to take lecture notes? We are using a Great Course in Biology and I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn how to take notes.
  7. :001_huh: I guess the title makes you just want to say "duh", but here's my problem: Ds used PH Science Explorer last year for Earth Science and we both really liked it. I was going to use it this year for Life Science, but I'm not sure how I should use it. When I assign SE, I have him read the section, define the vocabulary and answer the comprehension quesitons. I also usually have him watch some documentaries, so some expirements, and draw some diagrams. The problem is that he's figured out that the section questions are actually bolded in the text reading. I'm 98% sure he's not even reading the text thouroughly enough, and is just going straight to the questions/answers. He's a smart enough kid that if I ask him to narrate back to me his reading he actually does a pretty good job. So maybe he is reading it, but I'm not sure the section questions are challenging enough. Or because he can more or less narrate back to me what he's read, is that enough? I guess what I am asking is, if you use a text (and this is not a thread debating the issue of using one), how do you use it? Any suggestions on how to make this more challenging for him?

My DS 14 has been working at the high school level for a few years, and while his ability to grasp higher level topics is strong, his ability to study for a test or take notes is, well, not so swift. He is dysgraphic and has ADHD, so I know these are playing a role in the development of these skills, but he needs to develop these before moving on to classroom experiences in the next few years. For note taking, he'll try taking notes to the Teaching Company course he's selected, Meteorology. He'll also be taking notes from his reading, likely guided by a set of questions at first (working on creating that). The piece I'm missing is assessment. Last year, he took Chemistry tests I wrote for him and a buddy. For some of the tests, he did beautifully. For others, he really crashed. For ALL the tests, he was sure he knew all the material, even AFTER taking the test. He seems to have no insight into his handle on the material. I really can't fathom that, but it's true. I could certainly predict which tests he'd do well on, given HOW he studied, but he couldn't see the difference until I pointed it out. And still he'd bomb. Any ideas for test preparation are welcome (Except for standardized tests -- he's amazingly good at those. But then there's no studying required.) Thanks!
  9. I know how to take lecture notes. I'm having trouble with book notes. My college class is online so no lectures and the textbook is the main source of information. I go through the chapter and highlight what I find important, but when it comes to writing the notes, I struggle. Are there any formats you particularly like? Any websites that give tips?   10. I just purchased the audio download of The Old Testament to supplement my SOW studies in Genesis. I want to SERIOUSLY tackle note taking. This course provides an outline of the lecture, so I'd like to concentrate on the best way to take notes when given an outline, by an organized lecturer. Later on I want to tackle how to take notes on a lecture that is disorganized and entered cold turkey without any prep, but not now. I'm willing to spend up to 3 hours preparing for the lecture, taking notes on the lecture, and processing the notes, if need be. I want to practice the ultimate note taking scenario.
  11. Do you or your dc do anything particular when they read textbooks? Do you underline, write notes, draw pictures, etc.? If you see pictures when you read (ie. you're a visual processor), I'm particuarly interested in what you do. I'm trying to develop skills in my dd for her to be able to read a textbook well, even one she doesn't like, and I'm sort of at a loss. Thanks!
  12. The Cornell Method of Note Taking isn't new, but I just "discovered" it yesterday and it looks great -- making the notes useful without having to re-do them. Anyone else using it? Pros? Cons? Better systems? Layout Example More Info Even More Info
