  1. We've decided to give Movies as Literature a chance this year. We plan to use it with the extras (reading novels when available, comparing and contrasting, watching and analyzing related movies). Any idea what I could call a course like this? We are doing the writing in the course, plus some writing from Time4Writing. I thought Literature and Composition, but it seems a bit plain. you think this can even pass as a regular English course? I'm doing this with my 9th and 11th grader.

  3. I just ordered Movies as Literature to use with my 9th grader for next year. It will most likely be just for her because I'm already going to be teaching two science classes with other students and tutoring a student and will be doing a special study session for an October SAT-II subject test. I'm curious how y'all have scheduled out Movies as Literature. There are 17 movies listed, so that would be a new movie about every other week. Do y'all typically watch each movie twice? Do you read the book for some of the movies? How much time did your student need each week to do the homework (not counting the discussion that I assume you'd do after the movie)?
  4. I have been looking around for something to use for literature for my dc who will be in 8th and 10th grades. We did Progeny Press guides this year and liked them. Oldest dc does not like to read and doesn't like literature study. I feel that we did a good job with the PP guides, but I feel that we need to add in focused writing about literature. I may stay with PP, but I would definately entertain something that is self-guided for the student or an online class - something not too heavy, but prepares for college. Literature is not my strongest area and I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this because of work demands. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that can provide suggestions and share their experiences. TIA - looking forward to hearing your responses!:bigear:
  5. I know I've seen threads on particular versions of the plays, but couldn't find it. Could anyone recommend your FAVORITE versions of: Romeo and Juliet Taming of the Shrew Hamlet Merchant of Venice The Tempest And any others 14 and 17 year old girls would be likely to enjoy. (By favorite, I don't necessarily mean truest to the text, but nothing veering off towards Monty Python. The version that will have them liking Shakespeare.)
  6. Does anyone have a list already? If not, I'd love to create a list of movies or plays that have been modern adaptions of Shakespeare's plays, or have used Shakespearean themes. Here's my two so far: The play "All Shook Up" is The Twelfth Night. "The Lion King" is thematically related to Hamlet. Note that I'm not looking for filmed versions of the original plays (Like Sir Laurence Olivier's Hamlet), but adaptions. I'd prefer to find movies/ plays that are PG-rated and under. TIA! Alane
  7. Has anyone used this? Can you tell me exactly how it works? Is there writing essays or papers involved?
