  1. DD is taking a 6th grade Science course (Distance Learning) from TTUISD.. She just ran into an experiment that requires a “stereomicroscope†or a “hand lensâ€. We knew that we would eventually need to buy a microscope for her, and that time may have arrived… I seem to recall seeing 1 or 2 threads on WTM, about Microscopes, in the past. If someone can give me a link, to a recent thread about Microscopes, that will be much appreciated! Also, I seem to recall people here saying they purchased something (in the USA), for about $100 that was OK. Is that price range OK or too low? Also, any comments, on the pros and cons of the different types of Microscopes, Stereo and other, will be greatly appreciated! Recommendations? TIA!
  2. We want to buy a microscope soon. We want it for high school level work or higher so we're looking for something that will last. We also want to get a digital imager so the littles can see what we are looking at. The thing is that I don't know anything about microscopes. What's a good brand? What features do we want? Things of that nature. DH sent me these links: microscope imager Comments on these products? Suggestions for ones to consider? ETA: I'm guessing the one linked is well beyond our needs. I was surprised DH was willing to spend that much. Thanks for your help!
  3. Subject: Apologia Biology. Requirement: $316 microscope set. Conundrum: next two years of science do not require microscope and after that, it only *might* require a microscope (depending on which ap science she chooses). So I don't really want to fork over $316 for a microscope we'll only use for one year. On the Other Hand . . . I want to provide the full biology course experience with all the hands on, discovery, and ah-ha moments that make science interesting . . . and full credit. I want the microscope and the microscope experience but I don't want to pay for it. Alternatives?
  4. What do you look for when you buy one? I have 2 opportunities to buy a microscope. Thanks. Sheryl
  5. I'm comparing microscopes. I'm trying to decide if I should spend a bit extra for the coaxial fine/course focus. Is it a big pain to have the fine and course focus separate?
  6. Where are some good places to buy a used or refurbished or otherwise inexpensive but good, working microscope? Either on-line or elsewhere. We live far from larger cities so probably on-line is our only option other than getting super lucky on craig's list.
  7. Another homeschool mom and I were talking at the pool. I originally intended for Ds to take a Biology lab class with a local mom this fall. The class is meeting very close to my home and they are using Apologia. However, this weekend after looking at both Apologia and BJU, Ds finally decided to use BJU with DiVE. So, now I think we are opting out of the class since the labs won't match. My friend (who has no high school age Dc) said "Well, he really needs to have an outside lab at high school age." Why? What am I missing? He's going to do labs, just not with the class. Now here's the story about the class: Over the course of the summer I have become increasingly uneasy about the class anyway. It has taken 3 months for the teacher to send any type of clear e mail explaining how she is going to handle the class. Most of the time she does not answer my questions. When she does, I often can't make heads or tails of her answers. She emails with her own questions and repeatedly asks the same questions that I already answered. I volunteered our microscope several times and she has never said if she is going to use it or not and keeps sending out the email asking if anyone has a microscope . A couple weeks ago an email went out asking if we want the kids to be lab partners and if we want to buy the lab supplies as a group. In the same email she asked if anyone has already bought them. But, we haven't even received a list of what labs she is going to cover (she said it would be different from Apologia list), so how can we buy supplies? I saw her in person and volunteered to organize a group buy for labs. She said she has it covered and the other mom who is helping her will take care of it, but her husband is sick and in the hospital so that's why she's been slow with getting around to it. When I got home Dh asked me, "how sick is he? Is she going to be able to commit to helping with a class if her husband is really sick?" Hummm, good question. Still no email about ordering lab supplies this week. I have seen the email addresses of the other families registering and recognize them from years ago when we participated in co-ops. They are not people who are serious about education. I remember many of their Dc as discipline issues and some of the girls I've seen at 4H remind me of groupies at rock concerts when it comes to activities involving boys. I know they had to be asked not to come back to some sporting events b/c of their behavior. I don't know the mom/teacher well, so I asked another friend who knows her better through their kids shared activities. She told me this mom/teacher is not home much and puts a big emphasis on sports over academics. My friends comment was that the class wouldn't necessarily be bad, but that her feeling is that it would be a lets-get-it done approach without much attention to detail. That isn't the approach I'm looking for. Back to my friend's comment at the pool....it has been bothering me. So, do you think she's right and Ds needs an outside lab? I don't think I can line up labs very well without having to buy Apologia as well. I don't want to create unnecessary work for myself, especially if the class is poorly run. Last question......would you still consider this lab class given the poor organization, confusion, families involved, and work it would be to line up labs?
  8. I want to buy a microscope (National Optical 134 Cled) but I am unfamiliar with all the places that I have found to purchase one. I've found it at: Bolden B&H Microscope World Miles co Scientific Are these all reputable companies? (this is a lot of money to dish out) I have not heard them mentioned before. Any other places that sells this scope? Thanks, RhondaM.
  9. I'm going to be leading a Biology lab co-op, and a friend owns this microscope. She has offered to let me use it, but I'm not sure it will work for our labs. If it won't be powerful enough , can you recommend the cheapest one that will work well?
  10. We are in the market for a microscope. Ds will do Biology I with VP in the fall. He is probably (hopefully!) heading towards Biology AP in the long run... I don't want to buy more than we need, on the other hand I would rather not have to buy a second microscope in two or three years... Do you think ds will be better off with a bi-ocular? Also, we live in Europe, and I am hesitant about whether to buy the microscope in the US or here. The US would be significantly cheaper, but I am worried about transport (how fragile are microscopes???) and potential problems down the road - if we ever had the slightest trouble, we would be pretty much stuck... Thank you for sharing your thoughts - this is new territory for me.:)
  11. DS needs a microscope for science. What brands do you like for kids? He is only elementary age but loves science and if this helps him learn, I am all for it. Thanks
  12. I want to buy my DD a microscope for Christmas. Since she will start high school next fall, I want to get something that will last for the rest of her science classes. I've look at Sonlight's Ultra Microscope and Rainbow Resources Able Microscope. Has anyone had experience with either of these? Or do you recommend something different? Thanks for your help!
  13. My dd would really like a microscope for Christmas. I'd like to get one that has a digital option (something that attaches to the computer is fine), as she has bad eyesight and needs glasses to see anything, so while she can look through an optical scope, I think the digital option would really increase its usefulness for us. It would be nice if it could also be used optically. What magnification should I be looking for? I see one from Celestron for $69, and others seem to run $249-$299 and up(!). Is the $69 one "cheap" do you think? There are very few details in the specs. Any other recommendations for things I should look for/avoid? Any brands that are good/bad? Do you have one you love/hate? If I'm going to buy the darn thing, though, I want it to be able to last through high school biology, and not just be a toy. TIA for any advice!
  14. We're just a few weeks into our Biology class and have had dismal failure when it comes to the labs. This week we were supposed to do skin cells and blood yet neither process for preparing the slides worked! Today we couldn't get the protist culture to show anything. I am so frustrated and angry! How hard can this be, really?? I have an excellent microscope and good instructions yet none of us can figure this out! If this was 2nd grade science I wouldn't be as frustrated/concerned yet given that this is with my 10th graders, I feel our time is being wasted. Any thoughts/suggestions? Next week we dissect things like clams and starfish; hopefully we don't have as bad an experience as we've had with the slides! :glare:
  15. My son is doing Apologia Biology this year and we do not have the money to buy a microscope etc. for the experiments. What should I do? Anyone in the same boat? Renee
  16. We don't have a microscope, so I was wondering if any of you have found any sites that may be used instead? We 're doing the Marine Biology next year and plan to do the dissections..we just need something hopefully online, to view various slides. Thanks!
  17. Any good recommendations for a course and/or a kit that could help us put a microscope to good use? DD is 11 years old, 5th grade, strong in science.
  18. Does anyone know the best place to purchase all of the lab equipment for this science? Is there a pre-made lab kit? Can I use one kit with more that one student? Does anyone have a favorite microscope that won't blow my budget? I am facilitating this science for a group this coming year, I would like to do all of the experiments without having to buy one of everything for everyone. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  19. :DHello! I am going to be taking Apologia's Biology this year (going into 10th grade, I am also doing Chemistry this year but that doesn't pertain to this post) and I am having trouble choosing a microscope! I know that a microscope isn't required for the course but I think that I would benefit from doing the microscope labs. Anyways the microscope that is recommended is a bit expensive for us (my mom is a single parent) and I found this other microscope that I was thinking could work. So my question is how do these two microscopes compare? Would the cheaper one work for apologia? What’s the difference between the two? Sorry, but I don’t really understand microscopes! Any help would be appreciated, as well as any other suggestions! :) Apologia reccomended: https://apologia.securesites.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=26_29&products_id=44 Lower cost microscope:http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=104720 Thanks for any help! (: Also, I would like to introduce myself! My username is for-the-win (obviously) and I am entering the 10th grade (as stated above). I choose my curriculum, and my mother oversees any choices that I make. Every year I order a ton of home school catalogs and pour over them making my choices! I get amazingly hyped up about it too. My mom doesn't understand why, but I personally find it very interesting/ slightly exciting... okay, now I sound like a total nerd! xD Overall I find this forum to be interesting and informational. Thanks :) ♥
  20. We want to do this next year; the cost is adding up quickly. Share with me your thoughts about using/having a microscope for this class.
  21. While looking through the update on R.B. Thompson (Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments), I found a link to this article which explains what one can look for in a microscope. Since this is a frequent question for homeschoolers, I thought I'd link it here.
  22. We need to get a microscope for HS science. Does anyone have any recommendations about type to buy and good sources to buy?
  23. http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1222546476-625084&subject=11&category=3314 I'm assuming this is a good brand for the money based on reviews here. Is this the best place to purchase? Thanks in advance for any tips! :)
