  1. We are studying SOTW2 this coming year, and I wanted to add a few poems that would go well with those topics. Can you help me think of any? They can be stories or inspirational that go along with the religious themes of the times. I know I want to memorize the Apostles' Creed and St. Francis of Assisi's Sermon to the Dogs with the children, as a few examples, but would also like some poems. This is for two boys in 5th and 3rd grades.
  2. I am reading the whole Little House Series to my kids and we are now in the middle of Little Town on the Prairie. I am astounded at the work that Laura is doing as a 15 year old! "Everyone" has the Declaration of Independence entirely memorized. At the school exhibition, Laura and the others did incredible math sums in their heads (like 2689 divided by 16), they parsed and diagrammed sentences verbally, and Laura recited half the history of the United States from memory. Is there middle school/high school curriculum that channels that 19th century method? I would love for my kids (now 9 and under) to work toward that level of mental dexterity and understanding. Is the curriculum Laura's teacher followed written down anywhere or has someone compiled it? How did we lose this??
  3. Hi. I am working on putting together my long range plans for the school year. I want to be more organized in my approach to reviewing materials with my elementary students. I am planning to review things like lists from grammar, geography, Bible verses, foreign language grammar forms, math facts, history time lines, science information, etc... Have any of you found online or developed any of your own plans for this type of thing? I am thinking of making a table with alternating the information to make sure I get to the things that need review.

  5. I have been working on Classical conversations memory work at home with the kids. I'm curious though about how other or communities memorize the dates of the timeline. This is separate from the history sentences. I know that in the time line song they have the occasional "3,000 BC or 2,000 BC" but does anyone do anything with more detail? do memory masters? Any info on this would help me for my plan of what is doable, thanks!
  6. Is the Classical Conversations memory work (specifically Foundations program) enough for grammar stage kids? I have been going back and forth on this issue for quite some time and need some help being 100% convinced. Yes, I want proof, so to speak. Is it truly effective to have them just memorize all of this information, without much context or additional info? Many people say that if you do CC you don't need to do anything else. Others add in some additional language arts, math, and maybe science. As of right now, instead of CC, I am prepared to use a full Language Arts program (either Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading or Logic of English, Essentials), a History program (History Odyssey along with SOTW), a math program (combination of Singapore & Math Mammoth until I figure out which I like better), a science program (REAL Science Odyssey), and Art (which we will add in as we're able). I have all of this curricula ready to go. I've spent hours and hours selecting them. But I keep coming back to CC. And the idea that maybe all that curricula is not the best use of their brains at this stage. Maybe I really just need to pack in as many facts ("pegs") as possible right now without them needing (or wanting) to understand it right now. I know that they love memorization and excel at it at this age. I guess I want to be 100% sure that the memorization is enough and that it will be of more help to them when they're older (logic and rhetoric stages) than fleshing everything out at this young age. Sorry so long. Can you help?
  7. My son who is almost 6 is very bright (tested as gifted) and has an elephantine memory when it comes to remembering things and details (I am like that, so it runs in the family?). For him remembering and recalling stuff is great fun. Right now, the only memory work he does is with his piano pieces - he gets assigned a few piano music pieces each week by his teacher and the expectation is to practice for a few weeks and memorize atleast one of them in that timeframe - but, what happens is that he memorizes every single piece by day 2 of playing them and plays from memory without his book from day 3 onwards. He can recall 100+ piano music pieces and play them from memory (admittedly, these are all small pieces of 8-32 measures each). He remembers road signs on roads that we do not travel through frequently (for e.g. we went to the doctor's office 4 months ago and last week he could tell me exactly which turn to take and how to get there). He also remembers in great detail anything he watches on TV though he only watches TV once a week. He is able to recite poetry easily and to recall every single friend's birthday, phone number, address etc. I want to help him with this skill. I want to do memory work and challenge him to improve his retention/recall so that he can get even better. I want to do it on a regular basis and make it fun. I have no clue where to start and how to go about it. Would poetry and math facts memorization be a good start?

  9. The "Pursuing a Classical Liberal Arts Education" social group was a spin-off from the big CiRCE thread last spring. It was supposed to be a quieter place for people to talk about ideas related to the thread. It was busy for a while, but then people wandered off elsewhere. Since the social groups will be deleted soon, I'm taking the time to copy and paste all the links to talks, articles, e-books and other media (and a few miscellaneous bits and pieces) for anyone who's interested. Hey, maybe you can bookmark some of them for reading & listening while the forum is down. ;)
  10. What do you do for memory work? How do you decide what is important? Does it correlate with your other studies? We are currently picking and choosing from CC Cycles 2 and 3, but I'm considering interest led memory work...
  11. I've been looking for memory work for my kindergartener. Is there a website with age appropriate memory work? I've got some verses already in mind, so that's covered. I thought It's be nice to work in some neat poems, but can't seem to find any that would be simple enough for a k'er. Any suggestions?
  12. We've been working on memorizing Bible verses and have about 10 so far. I'm getting a memory work binder put together and I would love if some of you could offer verse suggestions. I'm mostly looking for favorite Bible verses to memorize, but would also like to include some poems, hymns, etc. Anything you think might be good for us to work on. Thanks!
  13. What are some of your favorite literary passages that you have your children begin memorizing? My dd7 and dd4 both have decent memorization skills, but I'd like to begin expanding them. We memorize Scripture and facts or Classical Conversations, but I'd also like to include some beautiful poetry or passage from great literature. Any suggestions?
  14. We've been using the Charlotte Mason memory system with note cards in a box for a few months now. But my toddler is constantly making a mess of it if it gets left out and I'm tired of putting it all back together! I seem to remember reading somewhere on the boards of someone who did the same system, only in a three-ring binder. I'd love to hear more about that, and how you make the system work. Do you move the pages around every day? Or do you somehow keep track a different way? If anyone has used a binder for their CM memory work then can you tell me how you do it? Photos would be awesome, too! Thanks!

  16. Now that we are settled into Kindergarten a bit (with our 3 R’s) I’d like to start some memory work and some poetry well. I am at the VERY beginning with both of these and ANY advice would be welcome. :) I can’t remember if I read anything about memory work in The Well Trained Mind (we are not at home and didn’t bring my copy). I’m looking for methods and good lists of age-appropriate poetry and memory work ideas. I have a few good Nursery Rhyme books and I think I have a book called, “Sing a Song of Popcorn” at home. I also have the Core Knowledge Books for Preschool and Kindergarten. I’m completely open to reading poetry just for fun, maybe doing a little activity of some sort….any resources, ideas here would be great. I think anything seasonal/holiday would be fun too. DS is an older Kindergartener (he just turned 6 last week). I waited to formally start him because we debated PS for so long and I wanted to keep him with his class. I might want to do the poetry and maybe memory work in the morning with my 3 year old (she loves this type of thing) as some sort of circle time. Any ideas of where I should begin poking my nose for information??? Thanks!! Edit to add: I forgot to ask: I'm also interested in knowing WHY memory work is important to you and your family, learning, school, etc. I'd like to gain a little perspective here...thanks!
  17. Do you have circle time? What do you do? How? What does this look like in your house? Please go into as much detail as you want, I am after the nitty gritty here, the when, why, how etc. Honestly i have no idea but i am thinking it might be a good way to get my littler kiddies some "school time" at the start of our day. I am thinking we should start doing this in the new year (and new school year). I will have a 5yo in 1st and a 4yo (prek) and 1yo. I was thinking a few songs (mostly for the littlies) especially action songs and nursery rhymes, some calendar work, memorization work such as skip counting for the 1st grader and a read aloud story for all. Is this even what circle time is? Am I missing anything? Suggestions or more ideas? TIA
  18. Hi, I've started using bits of Classical Conversations in my curriculum this year and I really love it so far. However, I'd like to purchase some memory help and have a hard time figuring out what additional purchases would be most helpful. Background: Foundations, Cycle 1 with ds1 (12yo late bloomer) and ds2 (advanced 8yo). No CC group - too isolated and no same-age homeschoolers + inconsistent internet. Cycle 1 - I am using Cycle 1 with one variation - we are using Earth Science and Astronomy from Elemental Science which we really like so far. So, can I still use the CD if we are using parts of Cycle 2 Science? Because of this variation, I thought the flashcards or memory cards would be better, but from various thread posts the CD seems to be a big hit. How hard would it be to do the memorization for Biology though we are reading and experimenting with Earth Science and Astronomy? Lastly, Memory Flashcards or History Fact Cards? Thank you in advance!
