My 6th grade dd has asked me if I can help her this summer with spelling and math. My idea for spelling is Megawords, and for math is Mastering Essential Math Skills. What other ideas would you have? She struggles in both areas. She is slightly dyslexic, but not terribly so. She has had phonics instruction at school and with me when I homeschooled her, but it just doesn't seem to stick in her brain. She knows her math facts well, and is able to understand the big picture of math concepts, but when it gets down to the nitty-gritty details, then it's a struggle, such as explaining how she got her answer. She can often arrive at the correct answer, but when she has to show her work, that's where the problem comes in.

I'm working on planning for the upcoming year and would like to find out how much time your kids spend each day and how many days per week is spent on any of the following curricula: Writing with Skill Story Grammar for Elementary MegaWords (and how many practice pages per study session) Book of Lively Latin Science Fusion History Odyssey, Level 2 Ancients Wordsmith Apprentice This isn't all we're doing, and so far the way I have her subjects laid out, a couple days a week seem unreasonably long. I'm curious to see how long your kids are really taking to get through assignments. Thank you! Darlene

We are in year two of hsing. Dd11 is an average speller but has never had any spelling instruction/rules. I'm sure she would pick up phonograms and rules quickly and apply them if she were taught. Would you suggest SWR or MW? Or both? Thanks JeniRae

Curious what tweaking you have done to make it a little more independent. I'm determined to use AAS because i know it works just needing to plan and streamline a little because we are headed for a tough year. Thanks :bigear:

My dd tested out of Megawords 1 last year, but I had her do some of the book anyway. We took the summer off and now are ready to start Megawords 2. I'm not sure where to place her in the book. Here's her scores: List Reading Spelling 9. 5/5 3/5 10. 5/5 5/5 11. 5/5 5/5 12. 5/5 5/5 13. 4/5 4/5 14. 5/5 4/5 Should I have her complete list 9, 13 & 14? She has looked the list over and said they are all easy. Do I skip book 2 and have her try book 3? What does the Hive recommend :D She really wants to be challenged. In her own words, "I want to be challenged mom." ;)

How do you use this program and how independent is it? Thanks!

I've looked at samples here: http://intervention.schoolspecialty.com/products/details.cfm?seriesonly=900M and the overview here: http://intervention.schoolspecialty.com/downloads/povs/S-Megawords2.pdf and I am so impressed! I love that it breaks the words down into manageable syllables. I like the organization of the whole thing. I really think this is going to be our spelling program for next year, and I think I'm going to start both my boys with Level 1 -- makes sense, right? I am actually feeling rather excited about this! :D

I never realized how important phonics/syllabication rules were with my first dc. He was a quick learner when it came to reading/spelling, so I pretty much skipped all the rules and let him read, read, read. I realize now that he's in 5th grade that was a mistake. I bought AAS to use with my 2nd and 3rd child this year, and when he overheard me teaching them the rules, he said, "Hey, I didn't know that! Why didn't you teach that to me?" I've also noticed that he mispronounces a lot of the words I thought he knew (mainly bc he doesn't know the vowel sounds for open/closed syllables for bigger words). Megawords is so organized and just what he needs. I love the pretest for reading/spelling in the teacher's guide! He's tested out of several chapters, and we've been able to focus on the rules he needs to know! I have peace of mind now! If you do decide to get Megawords for your older kids, you must order the teacher's guide to get the full benefit of the program! Oh, and if you're reading this and you have young kids, save yourself some time and money and go with a good phonics program from the beginning!

I have been seeing alot of people talking about that on here and am curious. I thought it was just a vocabulary type thing but it seems I am wrong. Sooo what is it?

My 13 and 10 yr old boys are pretty good readers (13yo is way above grade level) but can't spell worth a lick. I don't know that AAS really excites me. It seems like the tiles and all might be a little baby-ish. I've been looking at Saxon Phonics Intervention - but it says it's for struggling readers/spellers. What would you suggest? Or a different program all together. I want them to learn the rules for phonics/spelling. Smiles, Shalynn

I am not currently using a formal spelling curriculum with my dd5th and dd6th. I have been trying to use words from their writings and readings however, for various reasons feel they do need to have something more structured. I do not want them to simply have lists to memorize. I want them to have the tools to be able to spell any word large or small; they need to know the rules. I came across Megawords and wanted opinions on it. It looks good from the samples I saw but the reviews I read were kind of all over the place as to how people were using it. Some said they used it as spelling supplement, some said they used it for help with reading and used another curriculum for spelling and one review even said she used it for her ld child. So is it a complete spelling\vocab curriculum to use with children of average spelling abilities?

Can you tell me if all Megawords books are the same level of difficulty, but each address different areas of spelling & vocab? I know there is an assessment book that can be purchased, but I would end up paying almost $25 for that and would like to hear from those who have used the program if possible. Thanks!

I just don't 'get' Megawords. Is it for helping with reading, spelling, or vocabulary or all the above? How do you schedule it? How many books a year? How do you use it for spelling? Do you still do a separate spell/vocab program? Do you need the TM? And does it help visual people to 'see' the words better to spell them?

Now I couldn't see, and neither could my boys, how that program was supposed to help them. Not enough hand holding or explanation.

Can anyone review Megawords for me? I'm thinking of using Megawords with my 4th grader next year. We currently use SWR, but I don't think I can use it with 3 students next year.
