So...I thought since there are quite a few threads going now on the topic of Pre-Algebra, it might be helpful to have one master thread to discuss texts, and to link to previous conversations. (Links at the bottom) I will post a link to my blog once I get photos up, as I know some of the texts are hard to preview online (Lial's, in particular) I have received Dolciani PreAlgebra: An Accelerated Course (1985) and Lial's Pre-Algebra Third Edition in the mail this past week. I already own Lial's BCM and AoPS Pre-A. So I think I have shopped enough that I can now safely make my decision...:D

Hello All! We are homeschooling for this first time this year. My oldest is in Kindergarten so I have taken the last few months to wing it. I thought unschooling would be a good fit for us since I work from home and we are heavily involved in other activities but what I am discovering is 1) I am not a plan-aheader nor a good record keeper despite my good intentions and 2) I keep myself up at night wondering if what I am teaching is on target with what my oldest should be learning. After reading Cathy Duffy's book, I think I am starting to get interested in KONOS and I didn't know if anyo

I have used Saxon for all of our homeschooling career, and both of my oldest two have gotten really bogged down especially when we hit Algebra 1. The oldest would spend hours and hours and hours getting overwhelmed by how much work there was. We tried Teaching Textbooks, but he panicked when it was so easy, because he wanted to be prepared for public school in high school. By his choice, we (painfully) finished Saxon, and he hit public school and has had a wonderful math experience. He's good at it, and has had very little homework, yet has done very well on the county's supposedly very rig

I somehow ended up on Math-U-See's site tonight. I've heard of them before, seen them at conventions, and even watched a sample disc once. I remember now ruling it out, for some reason....... ...so I just watched the sample video tonight for Primer...which I assume is K5 level. Um, I thought I would see something lively, interactive for this level at least. Nope, boring man standing in front of a white board...having a very boring conversation, using words that are just not K5-oriented. What I am missing? Does anyone actually use and enjoy it at this young level?

I have been using CLE for 5 years. My dd10 started with CLE when she was in 1st grade. My ds8 just started CLE last year in 1st grade. My dd6 tried CLE, but it did not work for her. We are using MUS for her. I'm tempted to switch everyone over to MUS. My ds8 gets math, but dd10 is having a hard time grasping long division. I wonder if MUS offers more of an explanation to the "whys" and, maybe it's a good thing to completely master something before moving on to a new concept? What do you guys think? It drives me nuts that I'm undecided. How do you think CLE compares to MUS? Part o

Just wanted to get some feedback from the other MUS users. I have a K'er who just finished Primer and a 2nd who just finished Alpha. Since their both moving on to a new book and new level, I was just evaluating our plan of attack. The student work has 2 books... The Student Text which has 3 page of Lesson review (A-C) followed by 3 pages of Sytemic Review (D-F). The Test and Activity Book has 1 to a few pages of "fun" math activities for each lesson number as well as a test page for each lesson. Previously, I was showing the lesson video and then giving my children 1 of the lesson rev

What are your experiences with these two programs for Kindergarten? I thought I was all set with Math-U-See..but I haven't ordered anything and I am drawn to Right Start. My son will be 5 when we start. He often blows me away with math concepts that he seems to understand. Today he told me that when he turns six (not 5 yet), Daddy will be 32. He was correct! And he does this type of thing on a regular basis. He also seems to understand addition concepts "in his head". We were talking about two weeks time and he figured out that he should add the 7 days in the first week to the 7 days

I've been searching the boards and have seen numerous posts regarding being behind on math, but I'm still at an indecision as to what to do. My oldest daughter who is 12 years old and should be finishing 7th grade. Although math is a hated subject, she seems to pick up on it fairly quickly. However, she is very resistant to learning in general. She was diagnosed with ADHD and currently just started taking medicine to help her focus. We are currently in Lesson 12 of Math-U-See Gamma. Just beginning multiplication. We do not use the manipulatives with MUS and she seems to learn from her

I recently purchased Singapore Math 1a and 1b textbooks and workbooks to use as a supplement to Math-u-see. I didn't realize when I made the purchase that they have a home instructors guide that goes with it. Do I need this? Everything seems self explanatory in looking through it. Is it worth also purchasing the instructor guide? Also, someone gave us the entire Rod & Staff beginning arithmetic curriculum for free and looking through it I like it too! I have no idea what to do now for math. Math-u-see is working just fine for us. We are using Alpha but my daughter doesn't really seem

I'm wondering your opinion about the math program you're using and why you chose it. The programs that seem to be popular are Math-u-see, Singapore, and Rightstart, but without access to the actual curriculum, it's difficult to choose. My daughter is six in August and we will be beginning first grade this year. Last year we used Saxon K. Thank you for your help! Jani

I'm wondering how much time you spend per lesson. Obviously it will vary depending on the ease of understanding, but what is your general rate of covering material? I'm wondering what is an appropriate daily workload (# of workbook pages) for my dd7 (second grade this year). We are just finishing up lesson 9 in Alpha, and she seems to catch on pretty quick thus far. In the WTM, an hour of math a day is recommended for her age. Do you do that much (or have you done that much in the past) with your 2nd graders? Should I mix it up with other math-type activities? Thanks for your input!

I'm curious how many pages you have your kids do each day. Right now my kids do 2 pages/day but I'm wondering if life would be smoother if they only had to do one.

I like Singapore. I really do. My math minded husband thinks it's the best elementary math program out there. I know the MFW author thinks it's the best. But right now...we need to do something else. My ds10 hates math. We have a road block on both understanding and discipline in doing math just because we've struggled too much. I want to do something else just to break the cycle. I can see going back to Singapore as the primary program at some point but we just need something different for awhile. What I was wondering is...in the little I've looked at MUS it looks like a totally diff

Hi All, My 10 yr old daughter is in 4th grade this year, but she struggled so hard to get the idea of multiplication last year, that I decided to "slow the bus" and try a different technique. After much debate with myself, I've settled on MUS Gamma so that she can actually "see" what multiplication is all about. My concern is that since we didn't start earlier in the MUS concept, will I get how to teach her the manipulatives and will she understand how it works? Also, we're still working on our addition/subtraction facts to get them down without using fingers. I feel like I may even

We have been using Singapore with my almost 6yo, but she just doesn't get it. I was wondering about MUS, thinking a program with more manipulatives might help. Can anyone share their thoughts on this program with me?
