  1. Thought I'd share... I just came across an "Ocean Exploration" NOAA curriculum (free! yay!!) while putting together our Marine Biology plans for next year: http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/curriculum/welcome.html I've only taken a quick look, but so far it looks like an excellent deep-ocean resource. We're in NC, so I'm focusing mainly on our "local" (ish) coastal communities and places we can visit and/or volunteer... but this looks like it will fill in the not-so-immediately-accessible parts very well.
  2. I'm revamping science at our house. DS #1 wants to do some oceanography, particularly deep ocean stuff. So I'm helping him to design an independent study project. I'm thinking of using the Blue Planet videos (one episode per week) with related reading and research online. I found some cool education resources on the NOAA website. I'll try to add more links as we run into them.
  3. (I initially posted this in K-8, then realized it should probably be in here) I wonder if I might bend the ears of anyone who has used this... Dd13 has expressed interest in using the Marine Biology program... and the last thing that I want to do is squish an interest... but I'm a bit concerned. 1. It's listed as a 11/12th grade course; she's going into 9th. 2. It says that a student should have taken a "first year biology course" already; she hasn't. 3. It's (obviously) written from a Christian, and I believe YEC, perspective; we do not fit this profile. There was also mention of math skills on one website - I can't remember what it said.. something about "Algebra II" ? She hasn't done Algebra yet. Now - we aren't concerned about 'credits' or anything. That doesn't begin until the 10th grade for us. This is purely because she's shown an interest. I wouldn't expect her to do this alone - I'd do it with her. I've not done a "first year biology course" either though -- so can someone tell me why they suggest that? We're both coming at this with empty biology buckets. ;) If we need to do a little extra 'looking things up', that's fine. If this is more like trying to jump into the 2nd level of a language course without even knowing how to say "Hello" -- that could be a problem. She does NOT want to do the basic biology course that they offer - it's the marine that's caught her eye. Oceans, marine life, how's it all work, what's done there, etc. I'm really not seeing a whole lot of other programs that are similar to this - if you do know of something that might be a bit more age/grade appropriate, please give me a link to check it out. (it has to be something we can order - not an online course.) I've never seen the book before...I did look at the sample module here and... it doesn't look that difficult... I like the 'conversational' style and I think dd13 will as well. In the sample module there, I really don't see anything that screams "You can't do this! You need other courses first!" I do see three very obvious 'in your face' bits about the age of the earth and anti-evolution. (I don't mean rude by 'in your face' - I just mean obvious.) If it's always that 'out there' -- the author seems to go "I'd like to take a minute blah blah blah" or stuff.. makes it obvious... if it's always like that, we can just skip over that stuff.. or look up info to counter it with our views, whatever. Oh one other note: we'd be getting a good microscope and the kit with the specimens on slides, but not the dissection stuff. She doesn't want to be cutting anything open - can't say as that I blame her. We can always go online and look for some videos/animations of dissections if need be. Apparently there is also a cd with videos/etc on it too; we'd order that as well. Anyone care to share their experience with it? Thanks! :)
  4. (edit: cross posted to the 'high school' section as well) I wonder if I might bend the ears of anyone who has used this... 5. My middle school (6th and 8th grade) girls are interested in Marine Biology. There don't seem to be any good text books out for this age group in this subject. Any ideas? Thanks- Judy in WA
  6. Have you done Marine Biology with your high schooler? If so, what text did you use? what supplementary materials? any other fun related activities? How did the course go? Did you enjoy it?
  7. Dd has had her heart set on becoming a Marine Biologist since she was in 1st grade (specifically for killer whales). She has been narrowing her list of colleges but doesn't yet know which ones are her top choices. I'm positive someone here as BTDT with their child so I'm hoping to gain from your wisdom :). Could someone kindly share what colleges you found to have the best biology program? My daughter is having a hard time pinpointing her top choices since she can't seem to find a conservative Christian college. This is important for her as well as staying close to home but she has said if she has to go out-of-state she's fine with it. She'd prefer a small, cozy setting instead of a huge university, but again has said she's flexible on this as well. Her main thing is the college being Christian (we are from a conservative Baptist background). For now I guess that is my main question: what colleges did your child look at w/a marine biology degree in mind? Even if your choices were not in line with ours I'd still like to know as my daughter is pretty open minded and adamant to find out as much as she can. She is in the 11th grade and a sharp cookie, pretty sweet, and is sincerely trying to take charge of her life. Also, so far for science she's had Biology, Physical Science, and this year she's taking chemistry (BJU). Would it hurt her in her senior year if she took Marine Biology instead of the standard Physics? I guess I'd also like to know how your child prepared academically (if comfortable). Ok, so I think that's it. Sorry if my thoughts are all over place. AT&T dropped the ball on the installation date and I don't have internet or tv at home. So I'm having to post from the computer library and the noise level is quite distracting. Thanks so much for taking the time to read. Blessings, Libby in Texas :) Mama to 4 dc aged 17, 15, 14, and my wee one---an 10 yo
  8. I have to change my science plans for next year. We have decided where we are finally moving to, and it is near the ocean. Since the kids have never seen the ocean I am thinking they will be fasinated with it, so we may as well do an ocean study for science. So those of you that have done an Ocean study/ocean science program what did you use?
