  1. I just posted a demonstration of the long division using base ten blocks on my blog. I thought I'd post over here in case anyone else has a child who is struggling to understand what they are actually doing when they go through the long division algorithm. The sample I posted was a pretty easy one, but the same procedure could be used with any long division problem (well, it would be harder with more than three digits unless you have a much more sophisticated manipulative set than I do).

  3. We've been using Fred with games and extra practice to supplement. DD is in 4th grade, and we just finished LoF Honey, which introduces long division. DD gets the concepts of multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division. She is gradually building facility with remembering her multiplication facts. But the steps of long division (which Fred nicely breaks down into divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) totally overwhelm her. I see the same thing in language arts: presented with too many steps/processes, she freaks. We're on a wait list to get her a psychoeducational assessment at the university (school psychologist evaluation last year wasn't very helpful and our insurance won't pay for a neuropsych eval without a head injury or sign of a nerve problem). We are also looking at having to put her in school in 6th grade (and are considering "holding" her in 4th officially for another year, which would affect her slightly at her enrichment program and for testing purposes), because I'll have to start working full time (I'm in school now). Any suggestions of how to break down/conquer long division? A process, way of presenting the steps, anything like that that worked for your child who was overwhelmed by it at first?
  4. My son large and small motor delays. His handwriting is terrible. Which makes long division a nightmare! He understands he needs to keep the columns straight and if I give him an 8X10 page per questions he can keep it neat, but oiy! the paper. A white board won't work, we tried that. Is there a program that will let me input the questions I want him to solve, so that he can do it on the computer or ipad? I do a lot of scribing for him in his other subjects, but honestly I'd like a break so he could just do his math by himself and be able to read it! He is getting physical therapy for the handwriting and "they" say he'll get it by the time he's an adult :glare: but we need to be able to finish a math lesson where I'm not tearing my eyes out because I can't read what he wrote! Any suggestions
  5. Our son is in 4th grade and I'd like to use Khan to supplement his text -- particularly long division. He's been very good at math but the multiple steps for him are hard, he is super bright but also has some difficulty with working memory and processing. He has trouble with the steps involved with dividing 3 digit numbers by 2 digits, etc. I've heard so many good things about Khan, and that it can even be used itself as a curriculum. BUT...I am at a loss as to how to get started. I do not want to set up a FB account for our son, and he doesn't have an email of his own. Is it possible for me to set it up with my FB and email only? I also heard something about a teacher account. How does this work and do I need to have a separate email account for this? If anyone can give me a few pointers I would really appreciate it. I keep looking at it, wanting to start, and giving up b/c can't figure it out. Amy
  6. Long division seems to be Math's dirty little secret. When people talk about "making math fun!", I'm certain they aren't talking about long division. So....any helpful tips to making long division fun? Or at least tolerable? Or at least accurate? Any tips to actually GETTING THE RIGHT ANSWER more than once in awhile? :banghead: We're understanding the concept and procedures (heck, I've even taught about 4 different procedures, for good measure). But it's the little things that are throwing off the number, like: we multiplied wrong somewhere in one problem, and we subtracted wrong in another problem. Or we misread our number and that led to a whole downward spiral into wrongness. BTW, I'm mostly referring to big ugly numbers like 17,657 / 54. Yuck.
  7. Things have always come easy for my younger dd and I am surprised this is where she is stumped. She gets the concept of long division if we're just talking about it but doing it on paper brings her to tears. She is the opposite of my older dd (and so the opposite of myself) who needs to see and then do the work herself. My gut feeling is that most of her schoolwork has been easy thus far and now that she needs real instruction my usual methods just really don't work for her. She's a very creative, outside of the box type of kiddo and I need help. Thanks!
  8. We are just starting HSing and our son is in 4th grade. We are doing Calvert. I'd like to give DS more practice in multiplying two digit numbers and in long division. They covered this last year in 3rd PS, but his attention/working memory issues make it difficult for him to remember the steps. He is otherwise very, very bright and has placed high in math tests (before long division!). I was thinking practice would help. Have seen a lot on Khan Academy, but I was not clear when I got there how to get started with a 4th grader. What are videos and what are practice areas, and how to you decide where to start? Any help would be much appreciated. Amy
  9. Can someone please help me explain "WHY" long division works to my ds10? He is getting the "HOW" of it now, but wants to know "WHY." I am not too sure of how to explain it, so looking to all of you for some help. Thanks! Michelle :001_smile:
  10. My son is just finishing SM 3A and long division. All has gone fine, and long division has (knock on wood) not proved to be an obstacle. However, when I learned, I learned what now seems to be called "short division" (as mentioned on the other thread, you can find a brief video on it ). My question is, why would one prefer to use long division over short? Short seems much more intuitive to me, and certainly less steps to "mess up". It also seems easier to explain using base-10 blocks. Anyone?
  11. My fifth grader is having trouble remembering how to do long division. No matter how many questions I go over with her, she is not remembering the method. I know that repetition is key to remembering, but is there a way that I can help her remember? Thanks.
