This is an UNconference, meaning that there are no talking heads. Any one of the people present can suggest a question they would like to discuss or take a topic they are comfortable and talk about it with the rest of us. This means that any attendee will be able to contribute their knowledge and support. This will be FREE, but I can arrange lunch (but not childcare). Please RSVP to aldrich613@hotmail.com . 8. I like the Five in a Row book list but knew we'd never be able to fit the actual program in with our regular school stuff... so I decided to tackle the volume one booklist over the next 4 months as a "summer reading list" instead. To help us along, I created this printable PDF chart of the books in a couple of different formats, with cut-out book covers you can paste on the chart as you read the books. There are also cut-out flags you can add wherever you like as you read around the world, and titles for "summer reading list" as well as all the other seasons. Download this & many other free homeschool printables from my blog here. (p.s. print the covers and flags on a sheet of sticker paper and save yourself a ton of work!)
  9. Whether or not you homeschool full-time! Whether your kids are (older, younger, special-needs, whatever - fill in the blanks)! Whether you're strictly Classical or something completely else! Whether or not you incorporate specifically Jewish lessons in your schooling! Whether or not you think what you do is especially interesting or cool or fun... ...I'd love to hear from you for the fourth Jewish Homeschool Blog Carnival, (extended-Adar edition!) coming up later on this week! Heck, I'd even accept offers to guest-host a future edition!!! Even if you're not Jewish, you can still help spread the word. :001_smile: You can check out past editions here as well.
  10. While preparing my Christmas ornaments and decorations I began to wonder how others who do not celebrate the birth of Jesus celebrate the season. We have a Christmas tree. Along with the expected Christmas ornaments, we also hang dreidels, pentagrams, moons, stars, and little gold foil suns. We light up the back terrace and pool area with twinkle lights everywhere. We also have a nativity, but it celebrates the rebirth of the sun and there is no manger. We cook and bake and play world holiday music, from Celtic Wiccan to Christian Gospel (which I love) to Indian Festival of Lights chants. We send cards -- they don't say, "Merry Christmas" because only a portion of our friends are Christians, but we do reach out to friends with wishes of Happiness and Health for the New Year. Some of our friends celebrate other festivals during this time: Hannukah, Christmas, Winter Solstice (as we do), Kwanzaa, etc. We read books about all the different ways people around the world celebrate winter festivals. We have friends over. We throw a yearly Winter Solstice party and show our Christian and Jewish friends how we observe the Solstice. Our Christian and Jewish friends invite us to their celebrations and we learn about their way of observing. It's a time of magic and joy in our home. It is a time of mindful contemplation of one year passing and another one, full of promise, about to begin. How do you celebrate?
  11. Another thread started me thinking about Jewish Food. I lived with a Jewish family for a while and ate some of the Friday meal from the Deli each week. I couldn't remember that noodle dish (Kugel), bit then again it wasn't my favorite. My favorite was the chicken, the mushroom barley (pasta) and the hallah. ( I like the kind that's not real eggy) I really like it with raisins. I also loved hamantashen and also real latkes. I'm pretty hungry right now...no good food and no hope of having any right away. I should be saying that I miss NY because of the culture.... BUT, the real way to get me missing NY is to talk about the food. Pizza, deli sandwiches (no Subway!) Bagels and lox...real flavored cream cheese... Fresh Mozzarella. Yum! Who makes this stuff at home?? Carrie
