My ds 8 would be the type to play video games all day if he could. We own a Nintendo wii and an iPad. He has few games for the wii and I have a few apps on my iPad that are for him to play, mostly educational. Anyhow for 2 years now he has asked for a hand held device. A DS I think he calls it. I don't want to get him one because I feel it would be a waste of money, something better will come out soon and you have to buy all the games. Yesterday he came home saying he'd take an iPod touch, that he could play games on it and watch Netflix. First question is this true? I thought it was basically for music. Second, if you can play games can you see them? The screen appears small but I haven't seen one in person. Would you buy one for your 8 yr old? I almost want to use it as an award system for getting school things done! Thanks nadia

I'm thinking about Winter Solstice gifts for my boys. Here's are my choices. Get the 8yo and 11yo each a Touch. Pros: * I can text them when they're away from me. * They don't have to split time with it. * This is more easily within my budget. Cons: * I can't possibly get my 6yo something he'll be just as excited about and he'll be jealous. * Because they'd be living in my boys' pockets, I'd constantly worry about them being lost or stolen. Get the three boys an iPad to share. Pros: * One stop shopping; Winter Solstice gifts would be over and done. * This has more educational value. * It's much harder to lose or steal. * Better video/photo processing so they can do their movie-making stuff off my iMac. Cons: * We're going to feel the financial stretch. I'm very strongly leaning towards an iPad. Is there anything else I should consider? Is it possible to get an educators' discount?

Both of my children are asking for tablets from Santa. What??? Or if not a tablet, at least an iPod Touch. My 10 year old in particular would like a Kindle Fire or Nook. I am not sure this is a good idea. What about Internet safety? Do these things have any type of parental controls? Not so much worried about them purchasing music or books as much as I am concerned about what their little eyes may come across. My 10 year old came upon so bad content on YouTube. She is nt allowed on YouTube anymore. Do your kids have e readers or iPods? I am thinking my kids are too young. I would love for them to have something for music and audiobooks but not sure what to do. I did purchase them some little cheap mp3 players and I can't even download audiobooks to it from audible.com. They do like them for the music. But, they are super cheap. I am willing to replace them but with what?? Thanks, Sandy

And if so, how? Is it free? Do you have to have it on a cell phone plan? We are trying to decide if it is a feasible gift idea for dd10, who really wants one. She has friends who send texts to her cell phone from their ipod touches, but I'm wondering if they are on their parents' cell phone plans? Can you place calls on an ipod touch? Do you have to have cell phone service for that? If so, what is the difference between ipod touch and an iphone? Thanks for any help. Terri

I am awaiting arrival of the newest model and need some recommendations -do you have a screen protector on yours? - what kind of case do you use? I have been looking at a leather flip case since it will be shoved in my purse but I wonder if it will be too cumbersome... I'd love to know your thoughts...also any free apps that you love? Thanks!

This is going to sound strange, but I am looking for a cell phone for my younger boys to use just for the games, music, apps, etc. I don't want or need internet or even phone service for it. But everywhere I go you have to buy a contract to get the phone! Am I crazy for thinking just the phone should be available? BTW, I am clueless when it comes to cell phones, all I have is a Tracphone myself just for making calls. Any help?

I wonder: did anyone start out with an iPod Touch, get an iPad, and completely ditch their iPod Touch for their iPad? If so, how do you like it? I use (used?) my iPod Touch for everything: calendar, addresses, email, to-do lists, grocery store lists, educational apps, flashlight, you name it! Now that I have an iPad - and have many of the same apps on it - I find myself using it almost exclusively. But there are some things that (IMO) it just doesn't do as well (but I really wish it did): I use my iPod Touch for my grocery list. I have the same app on my iPad, but don't ever lug it around the Commissary or Ikea, checking off items. Does anyone use their iPad for this? I need a flashlight at night - My iPod Touch is the perfect size to light my way through our darkened upstairs & bedroom. My iPad would wake the entire neighborhood. Similarly, I read in bed at night (DH is usually asleep way before I) and the iPad is too bright. Anyhow, would like to know if anyone has successfully moved form their iPod Touch to an iPad. I'm asking - in all honesty - because I am trying to decide if I really need an iPhone or not, LOL! :tongue_smilie:

Hi ladies. I have a brand-new, unopened 8G 2nd gen iPod Touch sitting on my desk. However I could trade it for a 3rd or 4th gen (+ $100) tomorrow at the Apple store. Would it be worth it? The one feature I might like is multi-tasking, but is that worth $100? I don't need any more than 8G memory. Also, I've been a die-hard Palm user for 9+ years. I LOVE databases (HanDBase), my high-powered calendar program (Date Book 5), and my shopping list organizer (Handy Shopper). None of these are available for the Touch. (Well, HanDBase might be) Could anyone tell me about their AWESOME Touch calendar or database/shopping list programs? I want high functionality! Otherwise I might just keep using my Palm. The drawback is that we just got new computers, and my Palm has no driver for Windows 7 so I can't sync it. (DH's laptop has XP but he takes it to work) Thanks in advance!

I'm curious if anyone has heard rumors regarding a 2010 release for the new iPod Touch? Dh and I just talked ourselves out of getting into a cellphone contract by promising ourselves new iPod Touches when they're released:D. I had heard months ago that they'll have a 5 mp camera with flash, but not much else after that. Anybody hear anything else??? We currently have 8GB iPod Touches that the kids will inherit. They're excited for the new release, too :001_smile:.

I'd like to get some sort of small e-reader for all those times that I'm waiting at dance class, t-ball practice, and so on, and am considering one of these two. I don't want anything big-just something I can stick in my purse and keep with me. Both cost about the same amount, and look to be similarly sized. Does anyone have any pros/cons of one over the other?

My son received a used Ipod Touch as present from a friend and we would like to eliminate access to all things internet on it. He'll be allowed to use it for music only. The problem is that we don't know how to do it and ds is very tech savvy. Would someone here be able to guide me on how to block internet access? I've searched online, and I can't find anything. Thank you SO much in advance!

I have been looking at the iPod Touch and wondering what other hs families think about it? If you have one, do you find yourself using it as a resource for hs? I noticed in the past apps that might be helpful, like a bird field guide for example... Thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated. Good or bad! Thanks

I'm still trying to figure out my new Ipod Touch. My ds and dd also have an Ipod touch. I see that any music that they buy also downloads on my Ipod when I sync it. Now I have a bunch of songs that I don't really want. It looks like the only way I can delete the songs is to go into my Itunes account on my computer and delete them. The problem is it looks like I have to permantly delete them and also the next time dd or ds plug in their Ipod and sync it the songs will be deleted from their Ipod too. Is there any other way to delete songs? I would love for us to each have our own account but I'm not sure how to do that. It seems like we can only have one account per computer. Am I right?

As if Atari releasing Centipede to it wasn't enough to push me to the edge - today i find out you can buy and read Kindle books on it! Gee, i should really quit reading about it since there is no way i'm getting the money for one until Spring at the earliest (and gee, i doubt i'll get one for CHristmas). The App: http://www.lexcycle.com/ The Store: http://stanza.fictionwise.com/ The Supported formats: http://www.lexcycle.com/supported-formats I need to go stick my head in the sand again.... maybe Santa will come thru for me?

Can you tell me about it? Someone on another thread mentioned that ipod touch can download and read kindle and other ebooks. Suddenly I am thinking, thats what I want for Christmas, now I know! But I am thinking, surely the ipod touch has too small a screen to really enjoy reading from? How big are the others? What other choices do I have? I would like to be able to download and read ebooks, but I am interested in other functions too. thanks
