From CNN Money http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/08/technology/apple-updates-spectre-flaw/index.html “Apple has released new security updates for iPhones, iPads, and Macs to protect users from a computer chip vulnerability known as Spectre. ... The latest mobile update, iOS 11.2.2, includes security improvements to Apple's Safari browser and WebKit, its software for web pages, the company said on its support page. Meanwhile, Mac users can now install macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 for the same Safari fixes for laptops and desktops. The download is now available from the App Store under "Updates." Apple (AAPL) said last week all of its iOS and Mac devices were affected by the flaws, and it already released updates to mitigate against Meltdown. Now, Apple users can be protected against Spectre, too.†-
I finally convinced my 86yo mother to give up her landline and move to a cell phone on our family plan. This change will literally save her $100/month while providing significant benefits. We all have iPads and Android phones and I just planned on purchasing her a used Android phone and going with that. But the more I think about it, I think an iPhone SE might be better for her. I believe the UI is a bit cleaner with bigger images and, more importantly, I think she may have problems with the Micro USB connector found on most Android phones. Heck, WE have problems with those things. The iPhones have the Lightning connector which can be plugged either way. I also think it is a much more durable connector than Micro USB. (We've lost a few phones to those tiny connectors, but the iPad connectors have been very durable.) I don't think the extra $150 for a used iPhone will make any real difference to my mother. (Did I mention how much she is saving every month?) Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with older parents with iPhone and/or Android phones that you can share? I am completely agnostic on this topic since I like both platforms. I would love to hear things like: "My dad HATES his iPhone!" or "My mom LOVES her Android phone!" or anything else that gives some insight into issues they may have/not have. Finally, are there other smartphones (must be able to create a WiFi hotspot from the phone) that will work on T-Mobile and are durable and ergonomic for seniors? TIA for all your thoughts!

Thanks for all the amazing help in the other thread I posted regarding a smartphone for Mom! :hurray: Based on that thread, I decided that it might be interesting to try to understand what kinds of features and/or apps *might* be interesting to my mother and mother-in-law so that I can best configure their phones to allow them to get the most use out of them. I'm also interested in understanding how seniors learn (or not) how to use these devices. Many of the ideas in the polls came out of posts in the other thread. Here are some ideas on how to complete the polls: - Please DO NOT check items just because they used it once while you were there helping. The goal is to learn what seniors ACTUALLY use (or not). - Please be sure to check ALL options that apply, even if some may seem to overlap. - If you are thinking of more than one senior relative, please just complete the poll for ALL of the different things that the different individuals use. - If you feel that YOU are that senior relative, feel free to complete the poll and tell us about you. Hopefully I didn't leave off any commonly-used features or apps. If I did, please let me know right away and I will try to fix it, but if many people have already responded I may just leave it so that the poll doesn't get messed up. Hopefully we can all get ideas how to help our relatives get more enjoyment out of their devices! -
DD is 6 and finishing first grade. She works especially well with iPhone and iPad apps, which are also important b/c she has a vision impairment and these devices are more accessible for her. Am seeking recommendations on more apps, any area but especially fun reading apps. We already have Starfall, Reading Raven (ok), Eggy Phonics 1-2-3 (she liked but the 2 and 3 versions froze partway and she's been unable to finish them.) Any and all suggestions welcome! ::) -
Dd knows a fair amount of Python, but is no expert. How big of a leap is it to learn objective C with the "objective" (ha, ha) of developing an iphone app? (We don't own any Apple computers at home, so we want to scope out this project before investing in a new computer that we really don't need...except for producing iphone apps.)

Help! Can't back up my IOS devices...lost in iCloud :(

Help! I have an iPhone and over Christmas we got an iPad. I did the original setup, and the other day got a message that my free 5GB memory for iCloud backup is almost full. So...I took a look, followed instructions, and deleted back-up from certain apps so it would take less memory. All well and good, right? Wrong! I got the message that it was still almost full. So, I decided to delete the current back-up (the button for doing this was front and center). Done, good, it said I now had 5GB total and 5GB used. But then when I plugged in iPad and went to do back-up, it said NO! can't do as space is almost full. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong, and how to correct? I also took another look at the helpful instructions in the original "your space is almost full" iCloud email, but this just muddied the water further, nothing seemed to apply. If anyone could help I would so much appreciate it! Amy -
Please excuse me for cross posting, I haven't had any replies on other thread. We are beginning a study of Greek and Roman mythology. We are reading d'Audelaire's Greek Mythology, but I thought it would be fun to support it with some fun mythology learning/game apps. Can anyone suggest apps for the iPad or iPhone that help with learning and remembering mythology details? Just for fun. Our son is in 5th grade. Thanks!

I have an iPhone with a number of educational apps for both kids. I just got an iPad, and have heard that if you have two devices you pay once for the apps and they can be accessed from both devices. I did go into settings and allow iCloud backup, and my calendar (Cozi) automatically appeared on the iPad. But not any of the old apps! Can anyone help me figure out what to do differently? I'll start. My absolute favorite that is played every single day here is Teach Me Toddler. My 2 year old is on it in the car on my phone or Ipad daily. He knows all of his shapes and will point out octagons in real life. He has also learned all of his colors and points them out. We have used the older versions of the same app with similar results. My 5 year old and 5 year old like Teach Me Kindergarten and Teach Me 2nd Grade respectively. I have a few others we like really well, but these are #1 for now.

Trying to find some new apps for my iphone that are fun & educational for my kids, ranging from age 4 to age 7 (but the 7 year old can problem solve & read at a high level). Let me know your favorites! My 7 year old just finished playing the free version of the Stack the States. He LOVED that.

Just got Iphone, looking at apps. Really want to find a good app to keep track of book collection at home (one that you could scan a barcode and it would enter data), also one for scheduling. Any thoughts, suggestions? What about Evernote? Any suggestions would be very helpful, all is new here. Amy

read books on it? How often? I have kindle downloaded onto my iphone and I will read when I am sitting waiting in the car sometimes, but the writing is just too small!! If I blow the words up some, the I am having to move the words back and forth and it drives me crazy. So, I am just curious to see if anyone enjoys reading on their phone.

Apple is scheduled to release iOS 5 today at 1:00PM EDT. This new version brings to iOS some features that have kept some Android affectionados away from Apple products, including: - An iOS 5 device will no longer require a MAC or a PC to accompany it. From what I gather, iTunes will essentially now live in the iCloud. This is a big deal, since it seems we still get the benefits of iTunes (specifically sharing content between multiple devices) without the hassle. Nice job, Apple! - A notification bar. This was one of the great features of Android when it first came out. Many are pleased with the new Apple implementation, so I'll look forward to seeing that. There are a bunch of other improvements included, as well. For all the details, you can go to the Apple iOS 5 website. If you are planning on upgrading this today, please note that you will need to first update iTunes to version 10.5 and reboot your computer. There is a new license agreement to accept for that, as well. You will probably want to update (and sync) all of your apps, as well, since many developers are releasing new versions to be compatible with the new OS. Apparently once the upgrade is done on both sides, we will be able to sync our devices wirelessly to iTunes. I'm curious whether it will be easy to drop iTunes altogether. We'll see. Hopefully the Apple servers will not be too overloaded today since DS13 is REALLY looking forward to playing with this new update.

I've been long overdue for a new phone, and we're finally taking the plunge and getting a smartphone. We're going with the new Iphone 4s (on Verizon). Want to place order soon. The big question is....how many gigabytes? We're trying to decide between 32 and 64. We do want to keep the cost down, except that it seems to make sense with changing technology to go with the larger number. And we typically keep phones a couple of years at least. I don't know much yet about smartphones, except that I really really want to use it as a camera and videocamera for the kids. And also for scheduling/family calendar, and as many smartphone apps as I can. Music to a lesser extent. Can anyone share their thoughts/recommendations? Thanks! Amy

We have never made any in-app purchases, but there are a couple that I am considering. What I am wondering is if you make an in-app purchase whether that purchase applies to all devices on the account or if it applies *only* to the device on which the purchase was made. In other words, are in-app purchases a way for developers to avoid the licensing of their wares to all the devices? TIA!

that I just discovered recently since buying our new iPad. These apps are free, except ArtPuzzle, which is a bargain for $1.99 -- & my big splurge is Sketchbook Pro at $7.99. My older dc use that app a lot but the little girls enjoy it also. I also wrote about this in my blog. I'd love to hear what others are finding out there. My little girls wake up early and do flashcards for 'fun' so I can't complain.:001_smile: Pandora Radio: I set about 10 classic music stations based on my fave composers. I play the music in the house and in the car. ArtPuzzle HD: Classic paintings by famous artists. The girls study the picture and then press the screen to scramble the picture. They spend the next 5 - 10 minutes rearranging the pieces to put the picture back together. Beautiful iPad app. FlashToPass: Math facts flashcards. The girls love this. Stanza: Free audio books. Right now they're listening to Aesop's Fables in bed. Planets: Shows the earth in 'real' time. Gorgeous visual of our planet. It does a lot that I haven't even looked into yet. USA Presidents: Flashcards, pictures, info ABC Phonics: Different activities with letter sounds, words & sentences Sketchbook Pro: Doodling, drawing, etc. Netflix: I watched Taming Of The Shrew this weekend. Gorgeous color. The girls watched Liberty Kids. So many great movies to choose from. My next splurge will be Art Authority for $9.99. -

I need to be woken up in the middle of the night if a particular email comes in, and I have a separate email account set up for that purpose. I'm looking for a way to change the sound on the email notification to something very annoying like the alarm. I thought I read somewhere you could, now I can't seem to find anything about it. Please help me people. I am one year into my second Razor phone using Verison/Alltel. It is a fine phone. However, now that I am officially a Real Estate Agent (ha!) I feel I may soon need to join the rest of the techies of the working world. I can get a Blackberry curve for $29 after rebate. Or a Droid for $199 after rebate. HOW can there be that much difference between the two? I WANT a Droid because it is the latest wizzy thing...but it won't be the latest in oh say a month or so. If anyone has ANY feedback on ANY of this stuff....let me know. I am so confused. -
Money is an issue so I am not running out to buy one right now. But I am thinking about it. How much do you guys love your device? Here is the thing, I live off of my Macbook. I would love to have it with me wherever I go but it's too big and I can't charge it on the go. I don't text or have loads of music and have tons of people to call. I would like visit important websites like this one, a Classical Liberal Arts one which has Latin and Greek lessons online, news, and watch TV while I am waiting for kids and stuff like that. Plus, I would like to have a smaller device to review some websites while I jot down notes. It's a bit bulky to do that with my Macbook. Just ideas, I am not committed to anything.

If so, who do you track? Spouse? Children? If so, do you track them with their knowledge? Is it mutual tracking, i.e. do they also track you? If so, why do you track them? If not, why not? If not, do you plan on tracking someone in the future? There are now tons of smart phone applications that allow you to track others via the position of their cell phone. Some are for social networking, others are for safety or security. Still others are for retrieving a lost/stolen phone. There may be other reasons, as well. We have a friend who mentioned to me that she tracks her son in college via his iPhone. When I asked her what he thought of that, she told me that he does not know. In thinking about this issue, I find that I can see many different sides to the subject. Really I'm just wondering what people are doing today and what your thoughts are about this practice. :bigear:
