  1. Hunter posted this recently on K-8, and said I could copy it here. It's a template that provides guidance for a science experiment or project, and could easily be used to give some writing/research structure to inquiry work. I adore it b/c it starts with observations, not hypotheses. I don't imagine many folks are finding themselves in need of this right this moment, but wanted to get it out in the WTM cloud. Please add any tags that seem useful so it's search-friendly, if you think of any.
  2. Our family spends a lot of time each year on big investigations, and I never hear about anyone else doing one. We are currently studying longshore transport and topsoil depth http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361740. What have your dc investigated this year? How long does it take them?   3. Or anyone else who wants to jump in, please do. (As if I have to add that on the WTM boards, lol.) Alte Veste, I have been reading several of your older post on inquiry based science and it really resonates with me. I would like to shift our science study in that direction after the new year. Prior to this science has tended to go in different ways here. It's either no science at all, follow a program which never lasts, try interest based which also never lasts, just read some books and watch dvds and call it a day. None of these is consistent or satisfactory. I really do think science should be based on their curiosity and questioning and I want to work with that. I have just been bumbling about, trying or not, to figure out how. So, I have some specific questions and then maybe just need a bit of hand holding. I know that may be a tall order, but if you have time can you answer some questions. I see that you say you start with the rabbit trails. Then further down in this previous post http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1947203#post1947203 you explain the 5E model. E1 says conduct demonstration or read a book to hook the kids. I'm a little confused how the rabbit trail aspect fits into that. Do you choose the demonstration or book based on a rabbit trail? Or do you start with a topic of your choosing, demonstrate or read, and then pick up on any rabbit trails that stem from there? Also you mention a question board. Can you elaborate on this a bit more? Ditto with discovery boxes. Photos appreciated.:) I am planning to get some of the books you mentioned, but as I just discovered this yesterday I don't have my hands on anything just yet and I am eager to learn about this. I think I will have more questions, but this is just to get started. I'm a bit nervous as my previous record in science (and many parts of hsing) is not solid in the stick-to-it area. I am also concerned that this will take a lot of time both to understand and to implement. However, I am highly motivated at this point, as this just seems right. Thank you for any help.
  4. I originally wanted to use Exploration Education's Physical science curric this year but never got around to purchasing. We've done some work-booky stuff up to this point but now I'm ready to make the purchase. Of course since I've had months to check out science currics I've change my mind hundreds of times! DS was STOKED about the EE set but I got to wondering if we might should save that for later? I don't want it to be over his head, yk? So I tried to see if he would be interested in something else & he said he either wanted to do physical science or chemistry. I need something that comes with EVERY thing. The materials for experiments, textbook, workbook, everything. I have a $130 budget.   5. My two year search for the perfect science curriculum has led me to conclude that I shall either have to write my own, or appraoch science without a curriculum, piece by piece. So, to those of you who do not use a science curriculum, what do you do to provide structure and coherency? Do you use a standard line of questions and a science log ala WTM which the student completes for every book or experiment? Do you choose a spine and follow rabbit trails? Just narration, copywork, etc.? I am asking generally, for grades 3-8. I have divided our science studies each year into three parts: nature study (with a nature notebook), natural history (readings), and "science". I have already planned out nature study and natural history, and have only "science" to consider. In this facet, I'd like us to study chemistry, zoology, botany, physics, astronomy, physical geography, meteorology, etc. I have a general order of study, but HOW to go about this has my stymied. I have read the WTM recommendations for grammar and logic stage, but I'd love to hear from the hive, too.;) Thank you for all your replies! :)
