Hi again! One of my first grade twins has high-functioning ASD. She had an OT eval last week and, although we haven't yet sat down for the formal review the results, she suggested HWT because DD has low muscle tone in her hand and still holds a pencil with a fist. I just got my box of materials today. I went with HWT 1st Grade. Because we just started homeschooling in early January we haven't used a handwriting curriculum yet other than Draw Write Now, which both girls love. Anyways I'm going through the HWT teacher's manual and I'm not sure if I should start from the beginning or jump ahead? She does know how to write. She can write all of her letters and numbers, both capital and lower case. The issue is that her sentences are kind of all over the place. She writes the letters but some are oversized, some are tiny, and some words in the same sentence are oversized and some are tiny. She gets very frustrated when I correct her. So in a way it seems odd to start at the beginning, teaching letters that she already knows how to write, but on the other hand she hasn't had instruction in the HWT method and I don't want to cause further frustration. So I'm confused! Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! Tracy

Hey everyone! As I mentioned in a few other posts, we are new to homeschooling having just started in January. My twins are 7 (November birthdays) and in first grade. One of my daughters has high-functioning autism and now that we home school we are looking into various therapists for her. We met with an OT yesterday who suggested Handwriting Without Tears at home. My daughter knows how to write. She can form all letters and numbers. However she still holds the pencil with a fist (something we are always working on correcting) and, according to the OT, has low muscle strength in her hand. Her writing is kind of all over the place. Either way too big or way too small, or both in the same word or sentence. She also has problems over-spacing words in a sentence. Anyways, I am looking at the curriculum and it's a bit overwhelming. Can someone tell me if the manipulatives are all necessary? I'm not interested in the wooden manipulatives because she does already know how to form letters. But the paper, slate chalkboard, blackboard, etc.? The first grade kit is $83 on Rainbow Resource, which is pretty expensive. I will do it, of course, but want to make sure each component is really necessary or if I can just buy the necessary items individually. Thank! Tracy

Which would you choose? I have a 3yo begging to learn how to write letters. He's also beginning to sound out simple 2-letter blends. He knows all his letters and sounds very well. He also LOVES workbooks. We do 2-3 pgs a day now and he'd probably do more if I let him. I'm not sure if I should get the "Get Ready for the Code" A, B, C books or the Pre-K HWT book or both? We're already doing the HWT activities (wet/dry chalk/homemade letter "blocks"/etc). TIA!

I am starting to look for a good handwriting program for DD for next year. She's 5 and finally has her fine motor skills where they need to be to start more writing. She's pretty good with some capitals (her name) but resists lowercase and letters with curves. I was thinking HWT may be a good fit, but it appears they only cover capital letters in K and lowercase in 1st. Is that correct? Would it be reasonable to speed up K and 1st so that she's writing well by the end of K? That's my goal. What other handwriting programs would you recommend? Thanks!

I already have the manual for pre-K and K and was wondering was the 1st grade one necessary . . . or what perhaps I'd miss if I didn't get it. Thanks.

My daughter has fine motor delays, so this program sounds like it would be ideal for us. I don't love the font, but whatever. Legibility and frustration-free are our goals. She is interested in writing, but she will need a lot of help and guidance. I want to start with the PreK level. What all do I need? I am on a budget, but I also am willing to buy what is necessary to make the program work (otherwise, what is the point, you know?) Also, if there has been a thread like this before, feel free to point me in the right direction. I was having troubles finding one.

Please share pictures! Include your child's age and the handwriting font your child is learning (or learned on). I can look at handwriting fonts all day, but I wonder how much of a difference the font makes in the end...

Anyone know of a site where I can make/print my own handwriting sheets using the HWT style font?

I have a 5 year old who is working on his letters and numbers at preschool. He has not mastered his handwriting but he is reading at a 1st-2nd grade level. Should I start him with HWT for Kindergarten or 1st grade? I have read that some of the kids fly through these books. Any advice?

Last spring, I was researching handwriting for this year and thought that HWOT would be our best choice. Well, I didn't have the money to put into all the things I wanted and decided that handwriting would be the easiest to do without a curric. Now I'm thinking that I really should get it. My question is - how much of the program do I really need? Obviously the student book... do I need the teacher's guide? I think I can probably make my own 'wood pieces' out of foam if necessary, but looking at the samples (and knowing how my son learns) I think the slate board would be a nice addition. Also, would you suggest buying additional paper? I've heard of people just creating their own double line paper on the computer (which I would probably do since I make my own notebook pages). Do I even need to worry about the paper? Please help me get what I need but spend as little as possible. I am looking around to buy from the cheapest source (recommendations are great!) but I think it's going to be cheaper to buy everything from one place to save on shipping. TIA!
