I'm covering SOTW3 Ch. 24 Sailing South for Monday- Wednesday with my 9 year old. Thursday and Friday I'll be out state with my 17 year old. My 9 year old will be home with dad and I want to give her some interesting books to read on her own. I already plan on Stowaway by Hesse. Do you have any other children's literature recommendations about the discovery and early colonization of Australia and New Zealand by Europeans? She is a very strong independent reader so anything written for children up to about 12 is what I'm looking for. Also, I have heard people from New Zealand referred

My son really likes historical fiction, and we are doing quite a bit of the adult stuff. He is a bit done with the shorter, cutsier versions where kids go back in time or there is a child doing an amazing feat of history alongside historical figure. Which is why I chose to post on this board. I have never had tons of trouble finding a good historical novel about whatever time period he is interested in. Until now. He wants to read about Cleopatra (we are doing ancients...again). Gracious! She appears to have been one frisky lady who got up to a rather interesting assortment of rec

Please help me assemble a reading list for my ds. We are spending most of our school year on ancient Rome, plus some time on early Christianity, ancient China, and the ancient Celts. The History of Ancient Rome from the Teaching Company is the main resource with added documentaries and movies and one or two research papers. Here is what I have so far for literature or historical fiction (I'd love to add more literature to this list): Detectives in Togas The Bronze Bow The Eagle of the Ninth The Lantern Bearers The Silver Branch Ben Hur The Robe Shakespeare - Julius Caesar (sti

Hi everyone, I'm taking AP US History online with PA Homeschoolers, and we get extra credit for reading historical fiction. Do you have any recommendations for American historical fiction? I know that there are a lot of great historical fiction authors out there, but I'm not sure about their quality and content. Thanks!

I'm putting together my US history plan for next year & we are doing something like Sonlight (with many of their Core 3 & 4 books) but I'm branching out some. We enjoy historical fiction and dislike the just-the-facts type books. We are also using Beautiful Feet's History of Science & adding in some additional engineering/science related modern feats. If you know of any books along those lines (if they exist), I've put them on the list, too. With that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions for the following topics: St. Lawrence Seaway Erie Canal Edmund Fitzgerald The Great C

I've been on a Tudor kick for a few years. I've read Phillipa Gregory's works, and some found in the YA section, but am interested in finding more. Any historical fiction you've liked? It doesn't have to be Tudors. I really like royalty and pioneer historical fiction though. I really enjoyed the movie The Duchess so any like that would be appreciated as well. I am a big fan of Jane Austen and Emily and Charlotte Bronte so books like that also appreciated. :bigear:

We've been doing the WTM approach to logic-stage history for the first half of this year, and my son is bored and has lost interest in history. I recently realized that until now, history has a been a time to cuddle on the couch and listen to mom read historical fiction -- so back to what works! I've found some great lists of historical fiction both for ds to read and as read alouds. I'd love to find a site that gives a summary, and discusses when the book takes place, so that I can co-ordinate our reading with our history. Without something like this, I think I'll be stuck reading hist

My father-in-law is teaching a ninth grade world history class next semester. He would like to assign some fiction or non-fiction stories or books to his students. He asked me for some ideas but my oldest is a second grader so I've heard of a lot of titles but I'm not sure which ones would be the best options. Here are the periods he will be covering: Greeks Romans Medieval Europe Middle Ages Renaissance Reformation New World Discoveries Asian Empires Monarchs of Europe French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Age of Imperialism, World Wars, Contemporary History He said most

I'll take any setting except the U.S. (Pre-U.S. North America is okay.) I just don't want romance. I can not stand stories that are mostly about two people having a relationship. Yick. The last historical fiction I really liked was The Agony and the Ecstacy by Irving Stone. I also don't want YA fiction. Any suggestions?

I am sure I used to have several wonderful lists that listed good literature chronologically. Our daughter has decided she wants to tag along with our son as we study the Story of the World Book 3. She is 13 but has an adult reading level and I would like to challenge her with good corresponding literature as we go along. She enjoys Shakespeare, Thackerey, Austen, Cervantes etc but equally enjoys modern books. Does anyone have any good lists or links to lists? Any challenging non-fiction books on the period would also be great - then I can set some essays. ;) Many thanks in advance.

I was browsing the library shelves while dd was at martial arts, and grabbed Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow. Enjoyed it so much that I am halfway through the second book, The Eagle's Conquest...and I see from Amazon that there are at least 8 books in this Roman series...and the author has another series started that is set during the French Revolution. I LOVE historical fiction! These boos are almost as much fun as my precious Aubrey/Maturin nautical books!!!!
