Hi, could anyone help me understand the difference between algebra 2 + trig, precalc, and college algebra? I've seen people say that algebra 2 + trig and percalc are essentially the same thing, but I know that most highschoolers take both with a2+t one year and precalc the next. Then there is the fact that CLEP offers separate exams for College Algebra, and Precalculous, which further confuses me. If college algebra is not precalc, is it algebra 2, or something entirely different? The names may vary by region, we live in New York State if that helps.

I know these editions are new. Has anyone done RS and gone on through levels G and H? My son is in level F (fifth grade) and I'm trying to figure out what to do for middle school and beyond. I emailed RS asking about the progression they used to recommend (starting videotext midway through the old level G) and I got the following response. We now have a Second Edition Level G and Level H that has taken the place of First Edition Level G. There was a lot of work done with the First Edition Level G that provides the teacher and the student with many improvements that help the student

What precalculus course would you recommend for a high school junior?

Hello, I just got off the phone with the math Cheif at the most expensive, best reputation in our town, private school. I inquired as to what text they use for Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. She stated they use Glencoe for all. The edition we spoke about was Glencoe Common Core 2014 Algebra I. She said they also use Foerster as a supplement. Does anyone have any experience with Glencoe? I can not afford to send my daughter to this school, but feel she is being woefully under challenged in public school and sadly, home school is not an option.

I need help/feedback. A little background: We used Singapore for K-6, loved it, went great. Then I would switch them (my three kids) to Saxon in middle school using the placement test. All tested into pre-Algebra and on we went. My son struggled with the last half of Algebra 1 (8th) and by the end of 8th grade was ready to never do math again. So, we put it on the back burner until now (spring semester of 9th grade) to finish the last few lessons and tests of Algebra 1 as a review for entering Algebra 2, and to finish it. In the meantime, I let him do Teaching Textbooks Geometry this yea

My son is a junior this year and is taking pre-calculus/trig. He is planning to major in Economics. I think he would most enjoy a year long AP Statistics class next year, however, I don't know if he "needs" calculus on his transcript. Another option is to take a semester of Calculus followed by a semester of Statistics at our local community college. Advice?? Ashley

I have used Saxon for all of our homeschooling career, and both of my oldest two have gotten really bogged down especially when we hit Algebra 1. The oldest would spend hours and hours and hours getting overwhelmed by how much work there was. We tried Teaching Textbooks, but he panicked when it was so easy, because he wanted to be prepared for public school in high school. By his choice, we (painfully) finished Saxon, and he hit public school and has had a wonderful math experience. He's good at it, and has had very little homework, yet has done very well on the county's supposedly very rig

I'm still needing help choosing Geometry for my to-be 11th grader, for next year. Any opinions on Teaching Textbook v2? My son found the first version to be not very helpful when he took the ACT. Is the 2nd version better? Jacobs Geometry? I'm not a maths person, nor is my daughter, and we can't do videos unless they're on disc, because our rural internet is on satellite, so we can only download videos between midnight and 5 a.m., when they won't negatively impact our monthly bandwidth allowance(yes, this really is as much of a pain as it sounds like it would be). Thank you!

Any recommendations for Algebra II and Geometry? My dd is currently doing Algebra (from Keyboard Enterprises) with a tutor. She doesn't really like the dvd portion of this curriculum much ( finds his explanations unhelpful, plus he doesn't show specific solutions to the problems), which is unfortunate because it is such a major portion of the program. My son used TT geometry, but wasn't crazy about it. He got on better w/ KE Algebra II than my dd is doing w/ Algebra I. Khan Academy isn't really a good option for us because we're rural and on satellite internet with bandwidth restrictions tha

Algebra II and the Declining Significance of Coursetaking A friend whose kids were/are on the AP track at a local (good) high school shared this. They've been rather disenchanted with the stress and treadmill feeling their kids have had in high school. Their oldest just headed off to a strong Midwestern college for engineering. The gist of the article is that having higher level math courses on the transcript doesn't imply that the student is capable at that level (or foundational levels) of math. A significant number of students who completed Algebra II with good grades test into r

I have successfully schooled one of my six into college, she has been on the Dean's list since her first semester. My DS says is going through a rough patch as he is about to complete 12th grade this May. Thanks to family members that have never approved of homeschooling he now has concerns that he is ill prepared (nuts right? His sister has schooled with me and is taking Honors classes in college). He would like to review English and Math from 9th Beginner to 12th to confirm he measures up. Does anyone know of a curriculum that will allow him to do this to calm his fears? Somethi

Any advice on doing these two maths concurrently? Ds is considering doubling up next year (10th) so he can study Pre-Calc in 11th and Calculus in 12th. Our current thinking (as of this morning) is to schedule two credits of math and if it becomes too much bump down to one credit and rotate them, taking two years to complete both. Any tips or trick, words of advice if you have taken that route? The current plan is to use what I already own which is either Discovering Geometry or a 1985 Jurgensen Geometry text, and Lials Intermediate Algebra.

I understand why in elementary - the drill and kill. But, is it the same in high school? I like the idea of a more integrated math approach. I liked the use of word problem/real world application that I saw in the sample. What we are doing right now for Algebra is drill and kill, with very little real world application.

We are running into a road block here as we enter the higher grades of 9th-12th Math I have to drop out beyond the first part of Algebra. My husband works all day and is teaching math at night. We are using SOS but for the high school years, I feel we need some kind of DVD program they can watch that will help teach Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig. What do you use? Do you use the Khan Academy SAXON DIVE Teaching Textbooks, Any help and suggestions appreciated.

I'm teaching a motivated 15-year-old girl who wants to be an anesthesiologist. Though she's perfectly bright, her math education has been a bit neglected so we're just finishing Pre-Algebra in March. I would like to remain her tutor throughout high school, but that may not happen due to pregnancy, a move, unforseen circumstances, etc. What I'm looking for is a curriculum that can take her through Alg. 1, Alg. 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calc. Preferably, it would have videos and the text would be written to the student. I would remain her tutor as long as possible, but she could continue on h

I have noticed that a lot of WTMers use the Art of Problem Solving matherials. I looked on their website and it seems to be for really motivated or advanced math students. Is this accurate? Does anyone use it for their "average" math student? Does the style of learning only appeal to certain types of learners? Does it take a year to work through each book? My middle son has completed Saxon Alg. I and II, but wasn't able to solve a single Alg. II problem on an SAT practice cd that we have. He only scored a 21 on an ACT practice test. Ughhh!! What can I do to rectify this??? Thanks, Ki

Hi all! I wanted to recommend a relatively new website, Slader.com. It has answers (with step-by-step explanations) for many of the popular math and science textbooks used in high school (for example, lots of the Saxon, Stewart, and Larson titles). It also has some english and history too, but the main focus is math and science.

This is why I ask: There's another thread about the difficulty in enrolling in public school midway through high school and having the credits earned at home count towards the diploma issued by the public school. In VA, the CLEP College Algebra test is an acceptable substitute for the VA Algebra I SOL test. (A score of 30 rates as proficient, and a 40 rates as advanced.) But I thought "College Algebra" was something a person took after having taken lots of math in high school (through Calculus). If that's true, how would a student do on that CLEP test after completing only Algebr

I am considering this text: Algebra & Trigonometry Functions and Applications, by Paul Foerster, Prentice Hall, Classics Edition or Abeka Algebra 2, but read that the latter is labeled 'honors'. I am currently looking into whether it can be adapted to be a regular text. Wondering your experience? Advice? PRos and cons? Thank you!

On what do you base your final grade for math? How much weight do the tests have in the overall final grade? Do you count daily assignments? If so, what percent of the final grade is the daily work? My son did very well on his daily work, but doesn't test quite as well. I want to average his daily assignments into his final grade, but don't know what would be appropriate as far as percentage goes. Any advice? Thanks!
