  1. I'm trying to decide between grammar curricula for this year and GWG is one I'm considering. This would be for my just turned 11 dd and my almost 13 ds. We haven't done any formal grammar/LA instruction - mainly CM type stuff (copy work, sporadic bits of dictation, and some Queens). Should I place them according to grade level (6th for dd and 7th for ds) or should I considering backing up a grade or two since they haven't done a lot of grammar work? Also, I am looking at their Soaring with Spelling and Winning with Writing.......any placement advice for these as well? Thank you!
  2. My 7th grader will have completed Growing with Grammar levels 3 - 8 this year. He is good at diagramming and has a strong grasp on language. Still, I don't think he's necessarily ready for a HS level grammar curricula. Although, I don't know? Any recs for grammar after completing GWG? TIA. Darcy
  3. So I have read through quite a few threads about the various levels of MCT and where to start students, and I'm still indecisive about what I should do, so I'm hoping those who have used it can give me their informed opinions. My daughter has done FLL 2 and 3 and the first part of Level 1 of KISS. She can recite all the memorized definitions from FLL, but honestly has a little trouble applying any of that knowledge to other things. She can fairly reliably find subjects and verbs, but beyond that she's pretty inconsistent. I really think the four part sentence analysis will help with this. So my concern with MCT is that the Island level will be just simple enough to not engage her, but then again I worry that the Town level is just a bit too much without having done MCT before. I've seen Crimson Wife's plan where she says to start with Sentence Island then move on to the Town level. Is this what I should do, or I should I just go faster through Island just to make sure she's got that part down? Thanks for any advice and help you can give!!
  4. Forgive me if this question has been answered somewhere already. I'm new to the forum and new to GWG. :) Are the student manuals truly necessary? I'll be using levels 1, 6, and 7. Thanks! Shannon
  5. We've been using (and will continue to use) GWG as our main grammar curriculum. But today our MCT LA & writing sets arrived and I have a question that I can't seem to resolve via google searches. In GWG we are taught that a sentence is composed of two parts: a subject and a predicate. The predicate portion contains (but is not limited to) the main verb that agrees with the subject. However, the pretest (and, BTW, what is the purpose of the pretest?) contains the following question: "Is the underlined word a subject, predicate, direct object, or subject complement? A school of blue fish swam under the dock." The TM lists the answer as predicate, but I would argue that "swam under the dock" is the predicate (at least according to GWG). The post-test provides a similar question, underlining only the verb yet stating predicate as the answer. I am confused by this discrepancy and had to fumble around when giving the test to my ODD. Any thoughts?
  6. I am trying to decide on a grammar program for next year for my oldest son. Could those of you who have used either one give me an idea of them? I am using Growing with Grammar 5 now. It seems so easy. My son gets all the answers perfectly. He says that he wishes there was more diagramming. He is really starting to like them. I heard someone say on the boards that these two programs are similar just that one is more Christian. Is that true? Help! Thank you to all! May the Lord bless you too! Sincerely, Karen http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/testimony
  7. I need some help with choosing a grammar curriculum. My twins completed MCT Island level in 4th gr. I also introduced diagramming to them (diagrammed sentences from Practice Island). There were no struggles, and I feel they've retained what they learned. For next year I need to find something that requires less teacher involvement, and that has led me to GWG. After viewing the samples, I'm not exactly sure where to put them. Looking over the TOC for level 5, I see many things they've already covered with a few new concepts. I don't mind having a year of review to reinforce what they've learned, but at the same time, I would like them to keep progressing somewhat. Is there anyone else that has moved from MCT to GWG? Suggestions.
  8. I think I may have finally solved my language arts dilemma! I'm hoping that GWG 4 + WWE 4 will be a balanced, well rounded combination of self-directed study with gentle instruction for my upcoming 4th grader (I will continue FLL with my youngers through grade 2). I'm also probably going to try GWG's Soaring with Spelling & Vocabulary. Here's what I ruled out to get here: FLL at the higher grammar level takes too much of my involvement and is too repetitive for my oldest, who has a natural grasp of grammar. She has liked CLE LA (what we switched to mid-year) but it jumps around a lot and I'm not impressed with the instruction (which is mainly in my teacher manual unlike GWG which teaches right in the workbook) - also the spelling component was below her level and the writing assignments didn't usually interest her. I considered R&S but from the samples and what I found on the forums, it seems overly rigorous for someone who already "gets" grammar, dry, and runs the risk of making the Bible rote by inserting so much of it. Plus, my daughter is more workbook-y. I researched Phonics Road, MCT, and others I found in the forums but they were either too expensive or too teacher intensive or too [insert other criteria]. So thanks to all of your input (I spent hours searching threads and starting my own), I think I finally have settled on all my curriculum for fall! Better go buy it before I change my mind... ...Oh, if anyone is using GWG + WWE, I'd love to hear your feedback.
  9. I need to cut back on some of my parent led materials so I can better meet the needs of my little ones educations (5,3,1). We are currently finishing up FLL 2. How does Growing with Grammar compare? Any other suggestions? Thanks, Jenny
  10. I've read message after message about how awesome, inexpensive, and thorough Rod & Staff is. That's great, but I am looking for a completely secular program, either for stand-alone grammar or for a complete language arts curriculum. So is there something out there that is secular and thorough? I've looked at Analytical Grammar, and that is one I'm considering, but I'd love a program that continues year after year. Thanks in advance. Jenny
  11. If you use or have used Growing With Grammar 4, do you use a separate writing program or do you just use the writing portions of GWG? What about MCT - is the writing in the Island level "enough," or do you use something else as well?
  12. Can Growing with Grammar be purchased anywhere other than the publisher's website (www.growingwithgrammar.com)?
  13. It seems so popular but I am afraid to use it lest someone comes along later saying it was a big mistake and their kid placed really low in high school or something to that effect. I had actually forgotten all about this one as an option. It seems like GWG might have more grammar, since it is strictly grammar. I am also thinking that FLL with WWE has too much overlap, so it may be better to go with GWG and WWE. My thoughts are a tangled mess.
  14. I've looked at a lot of the threads on here about grammar programs. I am leaning towards Growing with Grammar because I want a "solid" program to do next year with my to-be-3rd grader. She is pencil-phobic, so I don't want it to be writing-intensive and I'd like at least ONE of my curriculum choices to be something I don't have to teach her the whole time. So, what are your likes AND ESPECIALLY dislikes about Growing with Grammar? Also, the grammar we will have done up to this will have been very loose, unformal grammar in the enrichment exercises of our spelling program (SWR). Should I get GWR 1/2 and breeze through it before starting GWG 3? Or, can I just get GWG 3 and it will offer some review/ramping up at the beginning? Thanks!
