  1. I want to use How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, but the guidebook has no questions to assist me in this endeavor. I'd appreciate any ideas from those who used the GC lectures when there weren't questions available. My first thoughts on how to implement: -He reads the scope of the course and each chapter in the guidebook (GB) either prior to or after the lecture. -Takes notes on pertinent infos, like terminology and composers (this is hard to accomplish, as he doesn't like taking notes :cursing: ) -Discussion I don't know what else. :confused1: Suggestions? Thanks.
  2. Does anyone have a subscription for streaming Great Courses? If so, was it worth the money? How did you use it?
  3. I would like experience opinions on whether it matters with this series of lectures if it's the DVD version or the CD version and why you prefer one or the other. It seems that since it's a poetry course, then visuals aren't as important. Thanks!
  4. Has anyone used this course for high school? I'm looking at possibly using it for literature. Pros? Cons?
  5. Has anyone tried this yet? My son has been wanting to take Classical Greek, but the time zone difference with Lukeion just didn't work out. I'm wondering if this would be a good alternative. http://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/greek-101-learning-an-ancient-language.html
  6. If any of you have used Great Courses as a high school credit course or even as a supplement, I'd love to hear how you did it. The course I'm considering is The history of the US: http://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/history-of-the-united-states-2nd-edition.html?pfm=UpsellSlider&pos=2&recloc=pdp It has 84 (30min) lectures for a total of 42 hrs. So not enough alone to count as a full credit, but seems meaty enough for a 9th or 10th greater to use as a launch point. How have you used Great Courses to work for you, how do you document it for HS? Thank you for any insight and experiences.
  7. So, I forgot we had signed up for an audible.com "free trial" and now we've built up six credits over the past year of not-remembering-we-had-a-membership. :glare: I see that they have a lot of the Great Courses on there. So far, my experience of the Great Courses has consisted of purchasing the DVDs and putting them on a shelf, so I don't know why I'm now worrying about the audio versions not being interactive enough. I also see that we just missed the big Great Courses summer sale at Audible. :crying: Should I spend my six credits elsewhere and wait for the next sale? How often do they usually happen? And would you consider the audio version of a course to usually be sufficient, or is the video much more worthwhile?
  8. 80 Great Courses are on sale for 6.95 each at audible. (Through May 8, I think.) If you have an Amazon account, you can buy them without being an audible member. I'm not an affiliate, but I am addicted. :)
  9. The Inexplicable Universe, a Great Course by Neil deGrasse Tyson is $1.95 today as Audible's daily deal. Sorry this is so late in the day. I don't get paid anything to say it. :) HTH Edited to fix a weird comma.
  10. It seems like a lot of people are planning to do Ancient History and Literature with their 9th graders next year. I have three kids who will be doing this for their first year of high school. Anyone want to collaborate, share, commiserate, and possibly get our kids to do some sort of remote discussions/projects? I think it would be a great experience to have everyone who is learning about the same things to come together (virtually) and bounce things off of each other. Something like an online class discussion, but without paying $$$$ for one. Anyway, let me know.
  11. Hello~ I have a question . . . am I dreaming or does TTC/TGC go down more than 70% after Christmas? I thought I remembered receiving a catalogue last year with 90% off. I received an email stating "lowest Prices of the year" ends tonight at midnight. :confused1:
  12. Robert Greenberg's course on Beethoven is on sale today for $3.95 http://www.audible.com/pd/Arts-Entertainment/Great-Masters-Beethoven-His-Life-and-Music-Audiobook/B00DBBL24I/ref=a_hp_c2_dd_p?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=0JYE058C52G93QHEJJ71&pf_rd_m=A2ZO8JX97D5MN9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5000&pf_rd_p=2004654282&pf_rd_s=center-2 Hope this helps someone. :) Sarah
  13. I don't see this posted anywhere, but I apologize if it already has been. I got an email today saying The Teaching Company (The Great Courses) has ALL of its courses on sale 70% off today and tomorrow. Free shipping code: 104475 within the United States. Of course, first check your library, and Audible may be cheaper, but I know some people wait for sales like this one and didn't want you to miss it. :)
  14. There are four different Great Courses about Shakespeare. At this point we are not specializing in any one facet of Shakespeare or any specific play(s), so any or all of them are totally fine. Though they all deal with slightly different subject matter, I was curious if anyone had specific likes or dislikes about any of them. # 273 Shakespeare: The Word and The Action by Peter Saccio # 280 Shakespeare: Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies by Peter Saccio # 2752 Shakespeare's Tragedies by Clare R. Kinney # 2711 How to Read and Understand Shakespeare by Marc Connor Thanks!
  15. I am gathering ideas for a photography credit for my son. He may be applying to a highly competitive design school and we need to shore up his transcript as far as the arts go. Right now I am aiming for at least a 1/2 credit hour, although 1 credit our would be fantastic. We have Fundamentals of Photography from The Great Courses. There are 24 lectures and each one has a homework assignment. The assignments look really good and each will take several hours to complete. There are books that are recommended for further reading & I am going to see if the public library has them. I can go to the university library if I have to, but I'd rather avoid it. I am hoping that I can find a photographer that is willing to let him shadow for a period of time as well, I think that would be fascinating for him. He would be more interested in shadowing a news photographer than a portrait photographer. A commercial photographer would be another possibility. He'd love it if I could find a forensic photographer for him to talk to, but I wouldn't even know how to go about finding one. I'm assuming he wouldn't be able to shadow a forensic photographer. We have the ability to enter one piece in the juried exhibition at the State Fair, should I have him do that as well? I've thought of having him put together a portfolio, but I'd have to research the various pieces that would need to be included in a photography portfolio. Surely that information can't be hard to find. He also has to start working on his portfolio for the design school, however that will include far more than photography. What other things can I include in this course? I'm not looking for filler, but I am looking for meaningful reading or experiences that would help him learn about the art of photography. All ideas appreciated!
  16. I know this is a long shot, but if any of you are working with the Teaching Company's "Great World Religions" and are covering the twelve Christianity lectures by Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, I'd love to collaborate on quiz/review questions. Nothing fancy: just short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple choice. I've got several done and will happily trade. PM me if interested. http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=6101
  17. I was just browsing Audible and found some of the Great Courses on there! I was very excited and just wanted to share in case you all didn't know!
  18. Here's a link to TTC's anniversary celebration free lectures: http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/AnniversaryCelebration2013.aspx?ai=82550&cm_mmc=email-_-FreeLectAct20130318-_-body-_-WatchThese These are usually just one lecture from a longer class but I've found several of the older ones to be interesting- I think I even bought one of the courses after the nice preview.
  19. Can someone point me to an explanation of how to build an entire course around a series of lectures? I'm thinking something like has been written, but I haven't yet found it in the archives. I love the idea of the videos. It would be a great opportunity to start ds15 on note taking. But he's going to need bookwork, questions and/or worksheets. I would also need quizzes and tests. I plan to submit this course portfolio to Keystone for a transfer credit. I am looking at regular courses, not high school courses. I believe I understand a course guidebook comes with high school classes but not regular classes?
