PAGE #1 Welcome to High School Motherlode #2 -- the second "motherlode" of linked threads on high school topics. There is also a college motherlode of linked threads on preparing for/applying to/attending college AND a few post-high school topics that are NOT college related. Enjoy exploring the amazing collected wisdom of The Hive! (In case links break, I have listed threads by their original subject heading, and have also provided the original post date and poster for search in various ways.) I am trying to decide what to do about calculating GPA, and would love to hear your thoughts. Do you think that, as a homeschooler, you are more likely to be compared to your peers in your city or area? And what about purposes other than college applications? I just had to answer the GPA question for a sports event. There are also scholarships and applications to do other things like internships, for example. In those instances, I feel like sometimes information like GPA is used to weed out, and then they sort more carefully through the top. And for local things like sports or internships or jobs, you are only being compared to your local peer set, so if you use a straight up 4.0 system, but the schools use a weighted system that goes all the way up to 5.0, then that could make you look very different. What do you think? I think it is more straightforward to just use a 4.0 system. Because honestly, in my opinion, it is a number, and it means something different in every class, school, city, state, etc. You can get 4 points for PE and 4 points for physics, it just doesn't make sense to me. I mean, someone can take a really easy load, and have a high GPA, while someone else takes a more challenging load, and has a lower GPA. I understand that colleges don't just look at GPA, but I am thinking about other things that use GPA as more of a standard piece of information, like for local awards, scholarships, and things like that. ETA: To clarify, I am wondering if it makes more sense to do it the way the schools in your area do it, or if that doesn't really matter.
I was reading Transcripts Made Easy by Janice Campbell. On p53 it talks about GPA and cumulative GPA. According to this the GPA is calculated by adding the total number of Grade Points and dividing by the total number of classes taken. The seem to use this for individual semesters. And the Cumulative GPA is calculated by adding the total number of Grade Points for the whole transcript and dividing by the total number of Units or credits earned. This seems weird to me. Why would you do the GPA like this (ie dividing by the number of classes and not taking into account the credits earned)? The Cum GPA makes sense but I don't understand why I would use this GPA calculation?? Also, the examples on pages 80 and 81 show a 1/2 credit class with a grade of A getting 4 GPA points. Then the next semester shows the other 1/2 credit of that class with a grade of A getting 4 GPA points ??? so the whole class gets 1 credit and 8 GPA points ... (that's what's on pages 80 and 81). hmm, really? I would have given 4 points for getting an A in the 1 credit class.
