  1. I have been home educating now for four years, and I just sat down and started to try to write out my actual goals for this journey. Up until now, I have been just kind of going with the flow, and feeling very wishy-washy about my curricula and extra-curricula choices. I have been easily swayed by the posts about the newest this-or-that that is supposed to be the best thing ever to produce the greatest results, and the posts about the tried-and-trues. I want it all, and I want to try it all. LOL I don't want to do that anymore. I feel like my dc are suffering from my lack of direction. So. If you have sat down and actually written down (or have in your mind), your long term goals, where you want your dc to be as a person and academically by the time they are grown, how did you divide those goals down level by level, year by year, subject by subject? How did you pick a curriculum for each of those, and have confidence in your decisions so that you aren't swayed by everything that comes down the pike? I have such a hard time at goal setting. I can either get the big picture, or such a small piece of it, that it feels like I'm not going anywhere. Does that make sense? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
  2. Do you set yearly goals for your kids? If so, would you mind sharing them, along with what grade level the goals are for? I'm very curious to see what others goals are. I have never actually sat down and written out goals for my kids before (I know! I know!), but this year I am. I'm excited! I think this will be a good year for us!! :001_smile:
  3. What are your goals for your kids this year? Extra credit if you are also willing to share what you plan on doing to attain those goals. Love2read wrote a wonderful post in the planning thread. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=400019 "By goals I don't mean philosophy of education, but ways that the child needs to be stretched or reinforced. For example, my goals for rising 9th grader who is more interested in swimming and music than in studyinng- Overall goals: Improve performance on standardized tests; write succinct and persuasive essays quickly Science: Fine tune fundamental knowledge; develop an interest in the subject History: Increase logical thinking about historical events and current events; increase interest in the subject (with my younger children I listed specific topics they needed to understand e.g., feudalism) Literature: Read a greater range of books more frequently Other Subjects: No obvious goals besides the ordinary I did need to sit quietly alone before I could create the above and while it's more detailed on my paper with dashes and arrows as I brainstormed, you get the idea. The next step is how to meet those goals. Again, my notes are detailed and messy, but the essentials look like this Science: Enhance study & test taking skills by using a textbook. Develop an interest by using a text brief enough that there is time to visit museums, watch videos and develop experiments. (Can you see how I would have missed this if I had just gone with an exciting product I had read about on the boards.) History: Increase interest and an understanding of relationships by using biographies and WSJ and post topic of weekly study on fridge so dh and I remember to discuss deeply to improve critical thinking skills. Use excerpts from light textbook to pull it all together. Related 500-1000 word essay every other week. Literature: (in addition to accredited online English course we like) add 60 minutes/daily with a variety of novels, starting with easier books (Probably this or a similar list https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SOgstrbZWeBp9Xrdvui5YsuW2-gUv2F-QRWwEp2YZfw/edit?pli=1) Assign 500-800 analysis essay upon completion of each novel."
  4. I finally finished my first draft of Blue Steel - Yeah. My personal december nanowrimo bootcamp paid off. Now I can move forward for 2012 and start editing. I'm ready for another Year of Writing Deliberately. A Year of Writing Deliberately was born back in 2010 when I read about Jennifer's (book blogger) idea of the Year of Reading Deliberately, the thoughts started rolling about in my head about being deliberate with not only my reading, but also writing as well. I discovered through Julia Cameron's The Artist Way the best way to go about things is to be there in the moment, stay positive and write goals: Daily, weekly, yearly. To help me with my writing goals this year, I am going to continue to be a part of A Round of Words in 80 Days, the brainchild of Kait Nolan. So my goals for the year are: 1)WIP Blue Steel: Update novel Bible, research story points, complete characters sheets, edit, and polish, find beta readers and ready for querying. 2) Breakdown into measurable weekly goals. 3) Take an online Writing Course through Savvy Authors and/or Gotham Writers Workshops. 4) Join IRL or online Critique Group. 5) Write at least 2000 words a day which equals 4 handwritten pages front and back. I hand write all my stories, then type them up essentially completing a 2nd edit. 6) Develop 2012 Nano story - Green Ice (working title for now) and utilize K.M. Weiland's suggestions in Outlining Your Novel to prepare the story first. 7) DYI MFA - Read and study the following craft books. Reading Like a Writer - Francine Prose Revision and Self Editing by James Scott Bell Characters, Emotion and Viewpoint by Nancy Kress Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell Story Engineering by Larry Brooks On Writing Romance by Leigh Michael Art of Romance Writing - Valerie Parv Writing Mysteries - Edited by Sue Grafton Art of War for Writers by James Scott Bell Elements of Style by Strunk and White So have you thought about your goals for the new year.
  5. In stripe's thread about ensuring your child gets a good education, some of you mentioned starting with your final goals and then working backwards from there. So, what are your final goals of hsing? :bigear:
  6. Hi ladies, All of these threads in dicussing finding the perfect history or science curriculum has got me thinking... There were so many great comments and information shared in focusing on key skill areas verses the perfect curriculum. It is not so much what topics are covered, how many or how few as 8FilltheHeart greatly asid... but what they are really learning... to synthesize the information.... Aaahhh.... So, from your experiences, how have you gone about teaching the key skill areas? What skills have you focused on for the logic stage?... specifically? Writing skills... outlining, note taking, writing good paragraphs, writing essays, reports, sentence structure, etc. Critical thinking skills, study skills... etc. How have you gone about accomplishing this to truly prepare them for the highschool workload? Where did you start? Did you have a progression in mind? This skill leads to this, and the next, etc. Any thoughts or insights???
