  2. I recently dove into previewing a variety of colleges through their respective websites and ultimately came away discouraged that most of the colleges, which are not even ivy league, would cost over 20k a year for dorm+tuition per child, even after subtracting automatic institutional merit-based scholarships. I looked at over 30 different schools. In order to compete for the largest scholarships at most institutions, it seems the SAT score needs to be higher than 1400 (I still don't know my daughter's score). My children seem above average but not necessarily in the highest accolade category. I have three children, so that would cost us 240k altogether. I'm surprised that most homeschoolers can afford these high fees. Excluding federal aid, the maximum amount being about 5k a year, and loans, which I will not procure, the costs seem prohibitive. 1. Where are most homeschoolers sending their kids to school? 2. In regards to college-bound homeschoolers, are most of them living at home after graduating and commuting to local schools in order to reduce costs? 3. My daughter is considering taking a GAP year after her senior year; theoretically, could she study for more AP courses through Modern States during that year and take more AP exams to help reduce her college credit requirements? Thank you in advance for your nuggets of wisdom. Marsha
  3. Have a young adult friend doing a self-study abroad. Rick Steves website is my go-to for travel tips. Is there something like this aimed at young adults and their more thrifty/adventuresome bents?
  4. Having had several conversations with parents who admitted that they wish they had encouraged their high school grad to take a gap instead of rushing off to college (often unsure of what he would be studying or unsure of his place in the general world), I thought it might be useful to have a general chat about gaps. There are some very exotic and pricey gap programs out there but other kids take a gap year without breaking the bank. Process: some gappers apply to college in the traditional fashion, then request a deferral. It is my understanding that most colleges will defer a student's admission for the sake of a gap. Other gappers work or travel, then apply to college. This might be the better option for students who are unclear on what they want to do with their lives. One of my son's friends lived at home and worked during her gap. Not terribly interesting, but this allowed her to have a break between high school and uni--and save some money. Another of my son's friends took a gap after one year of college. He was not sure about the direction of the program he was in and wanted some time off to consider his options. He worked that year, traveled too. The following fall, he enrolled in a different program and is a much happier camper. How has your student or family friend benefited from a gap? Are there any considerations or disadvantages that should be mentioned? Some universities are even funding the gap. (Tufts University article.)
  5. Hi all, I read a recent article about the growing popularity of 'gap year' internships among high school grads. I was wondering if anyone here has considered this or done something like it with their kids? Here is the article discussing it: http://www.theintell.com/life-style/guides/education/gap-years-gain-popularity-as-students-seek-purpose-passion/article_717c4c6b-d4b7-50e2-92d0-c5baf4eaf423.html Secondly, and also very interesting to me is the idea of internships 'during' high school. I work for a large tech company and have had the opportunity to meet several high school interns that we brought in at different locations here in the states. It seems like a great opportunity to provide these students with a glimpse into STEM careers and opportunities which they are interested in pursuing. Here are several such companies: http://www.hercampus.com/high-school/7-great-companies-high-school-internships
  6. Hello all. Now that The Boy is an official college grad (The Archaeologist), I don't hang around this board much. But a friend mentioned something today which sends me back to my well trained experts. Any interesting ideas for gap years? Friend mentioned Americorps for her daughter. I did not realize that Americorps took 18 year olds; then I cringed inwardly because the two college grads I know who had Americorps jobs (one in the inner city, another in a rural community) that seemed to require a level of independent living that I would not expect of an 18 year old. Or am I being overly protective? I know that there are very $pendy overseas gap year programs overseas. Has your student found an interesting program or have they followed their bliss with a limited budget? One of my nieces had a gap as a nanny for another family member who resided overseas. This is ideal but not everyone has a family member in need of a nanny. Are there reputable placement agencies? I don't think the young lady in question knows what she wants to study in college, hence the idea of a gap. I'd love to know what you kids have done or any interesting resources you have stumbled upon. Thank you in advance.
