  1. Hi All, I'm a first-time homeschooling mom. I have a rising 4th grader who struggles a lot in the writing department. I saw the author's YT video talking about WWE and love the idea behind this program and how it was designed to help kids who can read but can't necessarily put down their thoughts on paper as easily or answer comprehension questions. My issue is, he should technically be in book 4 but because he struggles so much should I just put him in level 1? Since it's designed for younger students, and has shorter work, maybe he can do a couple of lessons in a day and try to breeze t
  2. I am working on plans for my DD who will be starting 1st grade soon. I am planning on using Memoria Press for a lot of it. However, I am questioning if I should add WWE 1 and FLL1. I really liked using those with my older kids and am questioning if there is enough of that covered in MP curriculum. I am also wondering if the overall load is to much.   6. ...First Language Lessons (FLL)? NO FLAMES, PLEASE! I'm trying to decide if I want to continue it with my 5 1/2 y.o. (who's mostly doing K work, but math and LA is 1st grade level). I find it ridiculously repetitive, but maybe I haven't given it enough of a chance? Any thoughts (along with your experiences) are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  7. DD4 is verbally gifted (reading at 2nd grade level). We are doing kindergarten this year, and I am looking for a grammar program for next year. She requires a lot of interpersonal interaction and conversation. She will do worksheets out of a sense of duty but would much rather talk to someone or work cooperatively. I like the idea of cuddling up on the couch together with FLL, and I like that it starts sentence diagramming early on. But I am concerned that it will be too boring for her.   8. I know this question has been raised in various forms before on this forum. I'm hoping for some advice or encouragement on this. Last year we used WWE 2 and postponed FLL. This year we added FLL and love it. But now I'm having trouble motivating myself to fit WWE in. I use the workbook so it's not difficult to prepare at all. I love WWE and want to continue - but It would help me hear the practical benefits of using both FLL and WWE - for level 3 in particular. Has anyone just abandoned WWE and done the optional writing in FLL?
  9. DD was sick of nouns, then she was sick of pronouns. She hates repetition. I decided to stick with WWE. Then I read some posts where people used FLL for writing and grammar. No WWE and they were fine. Also, DD seems too advanced for WWE 1. Add to that the fact that the memorization of the grammar lists is always raved about and the FLL 1/2 audio is recommended if you start with FLL 3.   10. Ok, so I am still in a quandry about grammar next year. I will have an "old" first grader (almost 7) and a young kindergartener (just turned 5). So they are one year apart in school but really 2 years apart. I bought Shurley Grammer 1 to begin with my first grader. AFter seeing how intensive it was, I knew that I had to do it with BOTH of them if I was going to have to put that much effort in it.   11. Ok, I have gone through the new (love it btw) TWTM book and see that Rod and Staff is still the highest recomended Grammar/Writing program. I am doing FLL4 in the fall, but will be done at Christmas. My girls are 10 and 11 so they can go through it pretty quickly. I wanted to use WT 1 and 2 with them after that along with the diagraming and outlining recomendations for the logic stage. After using WT1 with my oldest this year I saw the "holes" in our language arts so I got FLL 3 and 4 and now going through WWE 1-4 as review. all that being said, where do you think I should start them in R
  12. I have been looking into the WWE and FLL for my soon to be 3rd grader. I realized that she had no concept of how to write when this past Friday she was required to write a short story about Jesus using some prompting words. Anyway, she sat there dumbfounded and near tears. I was near tears myself seeing her little face soooooo sad looking :crying:!   13. I am using FLL 2 w/ my 2nd grade son who is doing fine with it. I remembered dividing words into syllables, marking vowels, identifying the root word/prefix/suffix, and learning about the different "tenses" of words, & 1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person... In elementary grades I was taught with Abeka. I looked ahead in ds' FLL 1/2 book and it does not cover these things. Does FLL 3 or 4 cover them? Everyone talks about grammer, dictation and read-alouds, but what are your dc reading? What about those comprehension questions we always had to do in school?   15. We have just started with FLL and want to get the WWE workbooks also. Should the WWE workbooks correspond with the same level in FLL? Or is it recommended to start with the WWE Level 1 Workbook regardless of age with no previous narration or dictation experience? My ds will just be turning 8 in a few weeks.   18. I am using FFL1with DD7. Last year when she was in a classical school she used Shurley. Her brothers, who are still in a classical school, both use Shurley. I am enjoying the low key approach of FLL, but when I think of the rigor of Shurley and the degree to which my two sons know the question/answer flows, the editing skills, etc. I get a little "panic-y." Does anyone have opnions on whether FLL will produce the same degree of understanding and skills over time? Thanks!
  19. DS is about 3/4 of the way through with First Language Lessons 3, and I'm thinking of trying out Growing with Grammar next. Has anyone made this transition at the same point? Should he go right into Growing With Grammar 4? Is there anything covered earlier in GWG but not in FLL that I'd need to catch him up on first? TIA!

  21. We started FLL 1/2 about 3 weeks ago and are lesson 23 in the grade 1 section. DD (7 yo, 2nd grade) can easily recite the definition of a noun, but when I ask her to name a noun (any noun), she can't do it and just guesses. Also, we've spent most of these lessons repeatedly talking about common & proper noun, but when I ask her the question, "In the sentence, The boy went to town is boy a common or proper noun?" She'll guess and sometimes be right, sometimes be wrong. Then I'll correct her and use the same sentence but with a proper noun added "John went to town", then asking if John is a
  22. Hi! I resisted PLL/ILL for years and used Abeka - boring but effective:001_huh:. For the last year I've used PLL for my 3rd gr twins and like the format and the gentle CM approach but I add a lot to it to make have the grammar stand out more. So, for those of you experts, is FLL better and if so why? Thanks for your wisdom in advance.
  23. I use FLL Levels 1 and 2 with dd7, and ds10 used it at that age, too. They both memorized the parts of speech and other items in that book. Ds has gone through R&S 3 and 4, and is at the beginning of R&S 5. At one point, I thought he should continue to memorize grammar rules and definitions from R&S, too. So I started out with having him write down the "Remember" boxes from R&S 4 on a sheet of paper in his English notebook, but never had him actually memorize them. Then I quit having him do that partway through R&S 4. The reason I quit having ds write them down a
  24. We've had the CD for well over a year now, maybe even 2 years total. But never used it, it just kind of slid to the back of the CD cabinet. But I pulled it out to use on the day we spend too much time in the car. And it's a hit. My 4 year old especially loves the fairy tales. Even though we've read them in FLL, it's nice to have the CD. Just a recommendation if you don't have it. We are enjoying it (finally) here.
  25. I'm using FLL with my two older boys, 7 and almost 6, and loving it. We are on lessons 113 and 47 respectively. My 7 yo does fine with writing - he doesn't really like to do it, but he will and he has been progressing. My 6 yo is not a writer - he hasn't really progressed over the last year. So I'm not overly concerned because they are young and they are boys, but I'm feeling the need to do something more than just handwriting practice. . . So I see that Peace Hill Press has WWE and I'm wondering how and when or if WWE fits in with FLL. TIA! Lisa
