  1. Hi everyone, Feel free to pick holes in this - or chime in if you have experience with the curriculum mentioned. Not homeschooling yet so may I be naive. I know it’s controversial, but I’m really struck by the self-teaching home-school. My selfish reasons are: - I’m an introvert and know I will burn out on any teaching-intensive programme - I want a big-ish family and may have other young children who need my attention - I would like to do some (remote) work outside the home My unselfish reasons are - I want a skill-based education for my children so that they can spend as much time as possible pursuing interests (whether they be academic or otherwise) - I think solo-learning is a very important skill. It just doesn’t make sense to spend grades 1-3 spoon-feeding and cajoling, and then teach them ‘study skills’ and expect them to work independently by university. So many university students flail without the handholding, and this applies to the workplace too. Many end up depressed without the structure of school (UK universities are less hand-holding than American ones, at least for Humanities). - It’s been scientifically proven that work you choose to do yourself is better quality than if it had been chosen for you (Montessori schools operate on that basis). I want to keep 'non-negotiables' as minimal as possible. - By teaching the core skills very thoroughly in the younger years (all 74 phonograms, all their Maths facts/concepts), they will be able to read anything or find ways to think through problems with or without me/a teacher. Surely that should be the goal of a solid education. So, my current thoughts/theoretical plans are: Young ones are actively taught maths and literacy every day (or on alternating days): - to read and spell using Orton Gillingham method. I like Kathy from barefoot meanderings' Reading Lessons Through Literature, as I think it has the most hand-holding for me. Spell to Read and Write also look good, also All About Reading. This would be preceded by Montessori early reading sequence with metal insets, sandpaper letters, and learning to ‘write’ with a movable alphabet. It involves learning phonics off-pat with flashcards. Learn Spelling rules off pat. - cursive first – RLTL has that built in (I would pick slant cursive as my handwriting style) and an extra handwriting book or SRW has a cursive first handwriting programme. - Maths (the four operations) – conceptually first with Miquon Math/Montessori activites. Then learn the maths facts off-pat using Robinson flashcards. From approx 8.5-9 years old or once they can read fluently and know their Math basics enough to start Saxon 54. Every morning, after a walk, we would have a ‘school time’ where they would each do their maths first and then any independent written (or drawn for little ones) work. They could choose to work through a workbook once their written work is done (like the critical thinking company ones or science ones) or draw/play/read quietly. I would be in the room with them working on my own stuff. At this point Maths would be independent – they would mark their own work and I would give them regualar placement tests to check retention. I would mark their essays. Maths could be outsourced to a Kumon centre but not ideally. I would remain involved till middle-school for grammar/LA study. I would start Kathy’s English Lessons Through Literature programme once reading is fluent – teaching the grammar lesson and supervising dictation/copy work for middle school ones. I would give each child a formal, 20 min lesson from ELTL or Miquon at some point during the rest of the day (not during 2h school time). I love the look of ELTL as it systematically teaches them how to write an essay/narration with a gentle transition into independent work. Eventually, I would just have them write an essay on something they were interested in/reading about/working on every day and have them work through ELTL themselves. I would ‘edit’ their work journalism style to show them how it could be improved. Typing is fine in later years. The books studied in ELTL would be ‘required’ reading (with substitutions for the ones I/the child doesn’t vibe with) plus one or two books from the Pathways history/science/geography selections. I would adapt certain things according to the student, such as the amount of reading/writing required. Narrations could be done by drawing. Some may need to start the independent work later and take longer with Miquon/RLTL. I’d quite like to make it so they are always reading one fiction and one non-fiction book, or alternating the two – that way the copywork and dictation can be pulled from either. In the later levels of ELTL I think non-fiction is incorporated anyhow. Afternoons would be for activities, playing and free reading. I would do read-alouds and games on request if we were home and according to my availability. There would be a ‘morning basket’ for each child with Wayfairers-esque book selections for the historical period, optional workbooks, and games. The older students would probably be enrolled in online study courses/studying for exams or going to Sixth-form college. I would do a family read-aloud before bed. Something on the historical period we were studying or the Bible, or maybe something like Narnia. Do you think this would keep us sane until the teen years? I'm aiming for simplicity and rigour.
  2. Would it be possible to use these side by side? I have a 6.75 year old (1st grade) who needs the Foundations program to help with reading (and set a good baseline for grammar rules). She knows how to write letters and knows some very basic phonograms so she can read very early readers but is not confident and guesses some words unless I make her sound them out. I also have an 8 year old (3rd grade) who would be in the faster paced Essentials since she is an incredibly advanced reader. She knows some basic grammar rules, but I want to help her memorize more (along with a program that helps with spelling). Both enjoy writing. My 8 year old really wants to learn cursive as well. Should I just do Foundations for the younger one and find a different, less all-inclusive thing for the older? (like Cottage Press with some spelling?) Any Moms have close in age, but not quite in skill set and use LOE (either or both)? I know I need Foundations for the 1st grader if I go with LOE... I'm trying to figure out cost vs. reality vs. sanity :zombie: The other option is to use RLTL with DD6 and RLTL & ELTL with DD8... (clearly I've got my act together with T-10 days :ack2: )
  3. I'm already feeling overwhelmed and burned out, and we are only finishing up week 3! I know I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what! Im hoping to get some advice/suggestions on what I can do differently. I have a 4 th grader who is reading well, but struggles a lot with her spelling. So, independently, she does math (everyday), ELTL (4 days), and her independent reading (Everyday). I do not have her do the dictation yet, because of her spelling, but she narrates to me what she's read and she does the Copywork assigned in ELTL. I also use RLTL with her 4 days a week to help with her spelling. My 7 year old son is not reading yet, so all he does on his own is Math (everyday). Then he and I go through his ELTL lesson together (more reading for me) and I'm also using RLTL with him to teach reading/spelling. I try to have both my kids together for the RLTL lessons, but sometimes I work with each one separately. I'm using Wayfarers and Quark, so I spend 1 1/2 - 2 hours every morning reading through all the readings, including our Scripture readings, geography, and depending on what day it is, Shakespeare and poetry. I'm usually exhausted by this time and we have yet to start a "just for fun" read aloud for the year...and I have sooo many great books on my shelf waiting to be read that I bought specifically for read aloud times. Plus, I'm wanting my kids to want to choose reading as their quiet time activity, or their "I'm bored activity", but I think they are feeling just as burned out as I am, so this never happens. I know not all the readings are suggested in Wayfareres, and I do not even do them all, so that's why I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at what I could be doing wrong. I also have a 4 year old that I am trying to spend some one on one time with reading to (more reading for me) and helping her with her letters and numbers. I would love to have my oldest daughter work more independently, but I'm not sure how to do this with my son not yet reading on his own. I know i must be doing something wrong, or is RLTL/ELTL/Wayfareres/Quark really this teacher intense? (this is our first year using all of it) Thanks so much in advance for any help!
  4. I have several questions that I am hoping to get some help/clarification with.I apologize in advance if this post becomes too long. This is our first year using ELTL. I am using Level 1 with my 7 year old son who is still learning to read and Level 4 with my 9 year old daughter who is a fluent reader, but terrible speller. I am also using RLTL Level 1 with both...for my son to learn to read and my daughter to help with her spelling. We are only on our second week using it and I'm just wondering if I am using the program correctly. With my so, I sit with him and read the assigned literature (for ELTL) reading, then talk him through each example. We then read the poem and fable, if there is one, and then he does the copywork. My question is, he does not enjoy most of the fables and always asks me why we are reading a poem everyday. Am I supposed to have him doing something with the poems and fables? Or just reading them to him daily, then having him narrate on the lessons that it says to do so? Does anyone skip reading the fables/poems, and if so, what do you do instead? Now, for my daughter, she does most of her ELTL lesson herself. She reads her literature assignment, does the exercises and writes in her commonplace book. My question for her is, when it comes to dictation and the condensed narrative, since she is a pretty poor speller, how would you go about doing both? So far, I've just been skipping the dictation and today, for the condensed narrative lesson, I had her just narrate to me instead of writing it all down. Is this ok to do until her spelling becomes stronger, or should I be doing something else? With RLTL, we are still just learning the phonograms. I've been going over 4 new ones a day with them both, having them review the ones we'e already learned each day, and writing them in their notebooks. And that's been it so far. It just feels like I'm missing something. Has anyone used RLTL with a struggling speller successfully, or should I supplement with a spelling program? If so, which program would you suggest? Again, I apologize for the length of the post, but appreciate any help you can offer.
  5. Do you find that ELTL is complete, or do you feel the need to supplement? I bought ELTL to use with my 4th and 2nd grader next year and I was just curious if I needed to add anything else for spelling instruction? Other than that, it looks pretty good and I'm excited to give it a try.
  6. I saw someone mentioned using them both, alternating days. Anyone else? I'm strongly considering them for my rising 1st grader next fall and would like to have an idea of the amount of time required per day. Also, I know I could probably figure this out by looking through the samples/TOCs more, but are the two combined a pretty solid LA lineup? Do you feel the need to add anything else? Also, please share which levels you have used. Thank you!
  7. I have been using Christian Light with my son through first grade. He turned 8 in October, and we are just now finishing the Reading One. He struggled with reading, so we have been working through Phonics Pathways for about 6 weeks as well. I believe he is right at second grade fluency level, with some days being better than others. Reading and L/A takes us the majority of our day; it is laborious and the workbooks seem a little too much for him. He doesn't enjoy reading,and this effects his attitude also. I love CLE because I feel like it is so strong academically, and it is open and go. I am having a hard time changing directions, but I feel like for the sanity of my son( and myself) I need to. I have looking at English Lessons Through Literature, and it seems much less intense, but I have never done narration, dictation, or picture study method, and I don't have a clue what to do with the poems other than just read them ( maybe that is all I am suppose to do). I just need advice on which direction to go with building confidence and better fluency on reading without sacrificing grammar and writing. I need a curriculum, because I need a Teacher's manual :) !! I have never taught reading or English and I don't find it easy to wing it. Also, any reviews or advice on ELTL from those who have used it, and what you think about starting at Level 2.

We're halfway through 2nd grade right now and I'm looking ahead for what writing program to buy for next year, since we're overseas and my FIL is visiting in September; so he can bring stuff over for me. My problem is that I don't know where I'm headed in writing or what is even important. I am attracted to language programs like CW, Write from History, or ELTL, which are classical or CM with a classical flavor, that integrate spelling, grammar, copywork, narration, dictation, vocab, and even lit analysis into one program. Right now we're using FLL and WWE, but I try to do narrations from our science, history, or lit readings, and make copywork from our lit, instead of using WWE's workbook. I would like to streamline all of this as much as possible, which is why I ditched WWE's workbook so that we weren't using random snippets of lit. For those of you who use CW or other all-in-one programs, I need some advice... Is it worth the price to buy the program, if you don't use all of the components? When I look at CW's primer, for example, I love the nature study and picture study, and the copywork and narration, but I think I would feel pressured to use the phonics and spelling components, even though I already have those covered better through other curricula. Then on top of that, we're still not reading literature connected to our history or current lit, and the grammar seems light--which leads me to my next question... If I am drawn to CW for most of the components, but feel that the grammar is lighter than FLL or R&S (just based on what I can tell for now) for the grades 1-4, is grammar really that important? Is the grammar "enough" in CW Aesop and Primer levels specifically or Write from History? Should I go more CM and teach grammar through writing if I like a certain writing program that isn't as strong as, say, R&S in grammar? OR.... Should I pick the strongest curriculum for each subject, and if I like CW writing only use the writing portions? (I don't want to use only R&S, though; I know I at least want to use CW or CAP for writing.) Is it worth switching to an all-in-one for my sanity and saving time and for the strong writing components? I run across similar problems with ELTL--I like certain things, but I still would like to combine narrations with the history and lit we're already doing, not add on yet more readings every day. Even though it goes through entire books, still, they weren't the books I was going to read at that time. Or is it worth it just to save the time from having to organize my own curriculum? Then I'm noticing that many of the curricula do dictations kind of differently than WWE. They are more studied dictations. So I guess some of my basic questions come down to philosophy of grammar and writing. I had sold myself on SWB's philosophy of early, rigorous grammar, and WWE's way of copywork, dictation, and narration; but now I'm wondering if the other philosophies are more age-appropriate. I feel confused. I had thought I'd do WWE and FLL for grades 1-2, then R&S grammar from then on (I have levels 3-5) with AAS spelling levels 1-4 followed by R&S spelling. I knew I wanted to add CAP or CW for 3rd-4th grade writing, but when I see all of the components in CW, I wonder whether I should use R&S or not, etc. I want to use too many things! How do I choose or narrow down? How much is enough grammar, spelling, and writing per day, and how much is too much? Sorry this is too long. I want to get solid curricula for each subject, but don't want to kill my kids by doing too many overlapping items, and so like the idea of an all-in-one.

  10. I'm usually not swayed by curricula, and I was planning on being a good little hsing mommy and using PLL and ILL with all three children. My DD6 is moving into 2nd grade next fall, and I was planning on starting PLL with her, no problem. Then I saw English Lessons Through Literature. Let me explain. Ds couldn't care less about format, he's not very visual. He liked PLL all right. He doesn't like ILL because it makes him write. Now Dd, she's very visual and cares about how things looks. She's artistic, likes beauty, and complains when things are in black and white. The pictures in our PLL are in black and white. Sigh. I wasn't planning on spending more money on LA as I thought I already had everything. I even have Voyages in English 3. I like VIE's presentation of grammar, but 3 may be a bit too complicated for her. Not sure. These are the programs I don't own, but I'm tempted by. I like the looks of English Lessons Through Literature (ELTL). It feels somewhat like a more modern PLL, with color pictures. I also love the idea of the literature being culled from whole stories and books instead of excerpts. The only con I can see that we are tied down to the selections, which means we can't do English that day if the section has not been read. Which is not a biggie, I think. Then there's Galore Park Junior English Book 1. I own JE Book 2 and 3, but not 1. I like the informal way it's presented, but thorough, and varied. The cons are the snippets of reading selections. That could be a pro for reading comp, though. So what are my options? 1- Just do PLL, woman. Resist temptation. 2- Combine PLL with ELTL 3- Combine PLL with GP JE Book 1 4- Skip PLL altogether and do just ELTL 5- Skip PLL and combine ELTL and GP JE Book 1 6- Combine PLL with Voyages in English (it's colorful!) and save money 7- Combine ELTL and VIE 8- Combine ELTL and GP JE Book 1 Ah! So many choices! I'm running around in circles and I can't seem to decide. She's comfortable with the pencil, but she hasn't written too much this year. Copywork and penmanship, that's about it. She writes for fun too. What to do? ETA: I may be moving into CAP's Writing & Rhetoric in 3rd.. but of this I'm not certain either. I was so sure with DS. Why am I having doubts with my girl now?
