  1. This is a complete art curriculum grades 1-8. It teaches everything step by step. Of special note, crayon drawing is taught in grades 1-3 as a form of painting with pages and pages of exercises using just 8 colors. See links below to see what was meant by a "crayon", before reading our initial misunderstanding of "crayons". Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 EDIT: added Amy Jo's link. Grade 4 http://books.google.com/books?id=iqBpAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false EDIT: Added Jniter's links for grades 5-7 Grade 5 https://books.google.com/books?id=oSN
  2. Hello All, Years ago I found a book that I thought BJU had suggested using as a supplement to their biology program and now I cannot find it anywhere. Ugh! Anyhow, it's a drawing book and the intention is to reinforce what the student has learned in the readings. I guess maybe it came out before so many of the science coloring books were available. If anyone has a clue as to what I'm talking about I would really appreciate the title. Thanks! Debbie
  3. I want to get some simple how-to-draw books for my 5-year-old. I'm not interested in Drawing With Children or anything teacher-intensive like that. I just want those books with step-by-step drawing instructions. I've been looking at the Dover books as well as some Ed Emberley books. Can anyone compare the two, and what else would you recommend?
  4. Hi, We are taking Art Appreciation with Apex Learning. It's good, but my daughter is looking for simple straight forward drawing instruction. I think the best setting for us is on-line video or tutorial instruction. I've bought countless books on the topic but the reality is I need the instruction myself. I plan to do it alongside of her. It doesn't need to be free, it needs to be clear and good. Any ideas? This could be a youtube series, an open source class but it needs to start at the beginning and work from there. Thanks! Julie in Monterey
  5. I have a 7 year old who loves drawing and painting. I believe this is a strength for her. How do I nurture and help strengthen this skill? We live in a small town (although there is a college here) so there are not a lot of options for art classes. There is a once a week painting class where you can trace a picture on canvas then paint it. It's $25. Will this help her or is it pointless? She has a Draw Now book that she loves. Any other resources or suggestions on how to help her? Thank you!
  6. Has anyone used Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain with a teen that struggles with drawing? Did you use it with the Oak Meadow syllabus or alone? Did you see marked improvement? Was it lasting? Thanks!
  7. My rising 4th grader really wants drawing instruction, and I can't draw my way out of a paper bag. What might we use? I'd like to learn, too. I'm thinking for a kid her age something online/video based would be good? I can't just hand her Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain . . .
  8. Could someone recommend an introductory book of drawing for DD5? I thought that she didn't like to draw, but I am realizing that she needs more direction. For example, she needs help when copying another drawing to see that the drawing is made of simple shapes - a bike is 2 circles, straight lines, etc. I have seen Draw Write Now, The Big Yellow Book of Drawing and Mark Kistler books recommended. Which one, or another book, would you recommend for learning the very basics?
  9. Has anyone heard of or used this art resource? Drawing God's Magnificent Garden Text It looks like a vey nice Art book and has some color too which is a bonus: http://olvs.org/ShopCart/InvDtl.aspx?InvId=16911&GrdId=&InvCatId=
  10. Hi, everyone! Could you help me find a good and well-organized course of drawing for our second grader? If it's free it'll be even better since our financial situation is far from pink :) I'm not good at drawing, though I enjoy it, and our 7 year-old girl is always sad she can't draw like her friends do. I feel so helpless because there are hundreds of sites offering info on this, I just can't seem to decide what is best for us. I feel we need something simple and well structured for all the drawing techniques, not just a collection of ideas. Some sort of a textbook with lots of step-by-step
  11. This free catechism of drawing is pretty interesting. I'm interested in catechisms in general. Do you use them for anything other than Bible? Have you been kinda catechising but not really knowing that was what you were doing? What even is the definition of catechism?
  12. I need some ideas for a drawing program for ds (who is artistically challenged). I am looking for something solid that will teach him color, shading, perspective, etc. along with drawing. Maybe even some info of artists or history but this is not a necessity. Also something that is not childish but a serious art course. Anything like that out there?
  13. I am hoping that some artists and parents of artists on the boards can help me out! My dd (next year she will be in 6th grade/age 11) is a strong visual artist. She wants to do a lot more art next year, so I have worked a daily block of time for art into our schedule. I'd love to be able to have her take art classes with local teachers, but they are very expensive. So we'll be doing a lot of art ourselves at home. And that's where I'm hoping for some advice! My questions: 1. Recommendations for books on drawing? We are currently working through You Can Draw in 30 Days by Mark Ki
  14. I borrowed this from the library and scanned the entire book. Now I find myself wondering.... Is this going to be too teacher-intensive for my non-artsy brain to grasp? I thought I might have an answer for art. Now it's back to the drawing board.... No pun intended.
  15. Which is better? HSBC has a sweet deal right now on the website. What books are needed to compare to the website? I'm considering the subscription, but I'd like to do the books - keep us offline. But I'd also like them to work independently...
  16. My son needs/wants a drawing course. I'm open to DVD, book, online, etc. What do you recommend? Wendi
  17. Maybe this TV show will interest parents and kids who want to learn to draw. Are their YouTube videos people recommend? http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2010/06/19/a_public_access_show_in_newton_on_teaching_kids_to_draw_has_been_picked_up_nationwide/ Boston Globe By Don Aucoin Globe Staff / June 19, 2010 They’re making a mark Five months ago they launched a little public access show in Newton, teaching kids to draw. How did it get picked up across the country? NEWT
  18. My oldest dd is 11 and loves to draw, especially people. I am looking for a good DVD on learning how to draw for beginners. I have come across the Donna Hughe DVD's at RR. Has anyone use them? What was your opinion? Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks
  19. I need something professional, but basic and incremental, for beginners. She loves to color, draw, paint, etc. She seems to have a talent for design. She loves art. I have no art experience or talent. I'd like to get her into some classes with artists, but right now the only offerings conflict with already established activities. I'm looking for something to teach her the basics of drawing: color, perspective, shading, drawing in 3-D, etc. I don't just want a book that will teach her to copy the drawing on the page, kwim? I'm planning to get her some professional art supplie
  20. I don't get it! I am trying to follow the lesson outline in MFW 1 which is the same as the lessons in Paula's archives. I can't see the big picture. Is there any other curriculum that will teach a 4 and 6yo how to draw? I know there are many drawing curriculums, but I think most are geared toward older children. If only there was a workbook to go with DWC! Has anybody made one? What else can I use that will produce good drawing results with little dc?
  21. My ds who is seven is an avid reader, loves to read any spare moment he gets. We also do lots of read alouds and he spends an hour before bed reading as well. The thing is he has stopped drawing, he use to sit there for hours drawing and creating all kinds of things but it has all stopped. I think partly because we have a toddler running around who would interrupt his drawing so he got fed up. I told him to go up to his room to draw but he ends up playing with his toys instead. If I ask him to draw a picture on something we're working on, he'll do it but it's not with the same effort he use to
