  1. I have the following resources on my shelf: The Handbook of Nature Study, Drawing with Children, and How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare. I know I would like to incorporate them next year into our studies to add some beauty to our days but I'm drawing a blank on how best to use them. I keep circling around, brainstorming different ideas, and searching the internet but I would love to hear how YOU are using any or all of them in your homeschool. What is really working for you or what did you try and found to be a flop? Help me brainstorm how to get the most out of these rich resources. Thanks!
  2. I recently finished writing and sharing lessons to go along with the book Drawing With Children by Mona Brookes. I took each lesson and gave you ways to adapt the lesson to your nature journal. I made a few videos and tutorials to go along with the lesson plans so you would have a visual aid in just how to go about using the many mediums that Mona Brookes suggests. Even though I slanted my posts to go along with your nature journal, the lessons are applicable to drawing of any kind. I know there are many of you on this forum that have tried to use the book and I thought you might like to have a resource that included: 1. All lesson plans listed with links. 2. Photos of many of the art mediums with links to Amazon.com 3. Examples of artwork from our nature journals. 4. All the videos I made to go along with the lessons. 5.   3. My dd loves to draw and I'm really excited about Drawing With Children. My problem is that it isn't really broken down into easily planned lessons, and I will have a new baby this summer, so I really need a super simple way to get things done. I'm planning on using "the" filing system so I can spend my pre-baby time planning my tail off and then hopefully things will go fairly smoothly when we begin everything in the fall. Does anyone have ideas for easily implementing Drawing With Children, preferably in a way that can be filed so that I will actually do it?
  4. My dh has decided that he will be taking care of the artistic portion of homeschooling. He recently started Drawing With Children with dd5 and so far they both love it. I am wondering if there is a hiccup coming up or something? Maybe the reason they love it is because it is the only thing he has to plan so it doesn't matter if it's time consuming because its the only subject he is teaching??? I want to keep dh motivated but after reading some comments on DWC I'm starting to get worried. Is there some flaw with DWC? But then again, if it ain't broke.....
  5. I understand Classical Conversations uses Drawing with Children in their Foundations program. I'm not sure how far they are going into the book as we haven't started CC yet (we start late Sept.) I was wondering if anyone loved it so much, that they went ahead and bought the book and continued using it at home?
  6. I'm wondering about the markers. Markers have never been my favorite medium, especially for filling in fields of color. I do think that her approach to drawing would work well for my ds, who has always been art-phobic (much to the chagrin of his parents, who met at an art college...lol) and I think dd would have fun with it as well. I can see the usefulness of marker for the exercises and contour lines, but I just HATE to use marker to color in things with. They tend to leave streaks and smear each other when you don't want them to, and if you try to blend them they leave color in the tips and you can never get that original clean color again, and I just find them unpleasant to work with. Could someone who has BTDT with this approach comment on this a little? Do I need to use a Sharpie for the outlines and get water-soluble markers for coloring in? Could we use a Sharpie for the line work and then color in with watercolors, crayons, pastels, or other media at least some of the time? How does this whole marker thing play out in real life? Is there a brand I should be looking for? I haven't finished reading through it yet, in case you can't tell.
  7. I just purchased the Mona Brookes books, and am enjoying reading it. Can anyone tell me personal stories of how you used it? Did you really use the tips like no talking, not using certain words, etc. How did it work for you? Also, what supplies did you start with? It suggests fine black markers and a sketch pad to start. What type of marker did you use and what type of sketch pad. I know nothing about art paper, so be specific. I will be shopping soon. I will be doing this with soon to be 3rd and 1st graders. Honestly if I was putting them in the "levels" they would be in separate levels. But I will need to do teaching time together. I am probably making this too hard. I should probably do the lower level with both of them? Help me get an understanding of this! TIA
  8. How do you use it? I've got it and I think it will work but I was just wondering how using this book "looks" in your home? How does a drawing lesson run? I was thinking that I could probably get all 3 of my children doing the lessons together, can anyone comment on the likelihood of that working? Do you use it regularly, say once a week or have bursts of using it?

  10. If you have used this book, how did you put the ideas into practice? Are there other materials you liked better? I am trying to arrange art lessons for a 4 1/2 year old and a 9 year old. Thanks!
  11. Has anyone done "Drawing with Children"? by Mona Brooks. It is recommended in WTM and I got it from the library. It seems great but too daunting for me to teach dd. I would love to find a class to SEND her to that teaches it, but I am in Columbus, Ohio and can't find one. Any tips? or anyone in Columbus with an art rec? I want drawing or painting NOT crafts.
