Help me out here. I haven't cooked much chicken as I've been a vegetarian for most of my adult life. I have boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Do I have to brown them before I put them in the crockpot? Do you have any tried and true recipes? Can I just put barbecue sauce and chicken breasts in the crockpot and have them turn out all right? I told you I needed help. I have no idea what I'm doing.

It's been a long time since I was here, but since I'm about to ask for crockpot ideas I knew where to go for advice!! But rather than ideas for the whole family, I need help just for me for lunches. You see, I'm working more hours as an art teacher at a school now and for Christmas I got a little 2-qt. crockpot, a small ladle and a matching Corningware mug. They are sooooooo cute, but I haven't come up with any healthy ideas that would be good for me during a work day. I'd love to stay low carb, so that limits a lot already. Can anyone throw out some suggestions? Thanks so much. Blessings, Lucinda

I have a 3 quart Rival crockpot. I have always failed at roasting veggies in them. They turn out soft, mushy and waterlogged and are never firm. I have tried a lot of different kinds - cauliflower, squashes, carrots, green beans etc with onion. I usually fill the crock upto an inch from the top. I only add olive oil and salt and pepper to them. I end up with a mushy mass with watery juices at the bottom. I have tried both low setting (6 hours) and high (3 hours) - and ended with visually unappealing masses. They don't taste that bad, they just don't look presentable in company. Am I missing something in my recipe? My friend told me to not add any salt because it might make the moisture come out of the veggies. I am going to try that. I love to use the crockpot because I am not home most of the time and it is great to come back to an already ready dish for dinner. So, crockpot gurus, is there something wrong in my method? Or am I better off sticking to my oven for getting this job done? Please share your wisdom.

Can you recommend a great crockpot cookbook that has PICTURES? I need photos or I can't pick recipes. Most crockpot cookbooks I've found don't have any, or only a few, or just some in B&W. I need full color photos of yummy creations to get inspired for new recipes. Help? Thanks! Melissa

We did our back-to-school shopping for my 10th Grade PS kid today. Since me, my son, and his wheelchair all risked being trampled by the hoards in the Target School Supples (tax free wee) we pulled over to the relative safety of Small Appliances. They had THIS: Apparently you put your leftovers in it and stick it in the fridge. You can plug it in at your desk to reheat your food at lunchtime. I thought it was a fascinating but didn't know what Hive Policy was on this little contraption.

I know they are apparently very controversial on this forum ;). I need a higher quality crock pot and we have some extra money in our Christmas budget. I would use it 2 or 3 times a week, mostly for beans or soups, but occasionally for meat. Mine isn't very consistent with its temperatures and just seems cheap all around. We got it for our wedding and I think it is the generic Walmart brand or something. Anyone have a higher quality one that they love? ETA: It doesn't need to be ridiculously huge either. We have a smaller family that doesn't eat a ton. An average-sized one would be fine.

What should I put in? This is for a burrito bar. For 11-13 year-olds. Thanks!

I'd like to use mine more. I'm even thinking about getting an extra one. But first--what to make in them? Here's the problem: I don't use cookbooks well. Once I get an idea of what can be done w/ something, I'm good. So last night, I poured some coconut milk, spinach & curry (& other stuff I don't remember) over some chicken & rice, added veggies, & dinner was ready. Easy, fun, & good. No recipe required. I want to do that w/ the crockpot. I can drop a roast in there & season. I can make soups in there (but w/ a couple of toddlers, that's hardly an easy dinner). I know ground beef/turkey has to be cooked before putting it in, so I'm more likely to use that on the stovetop (one-dish meals). What about chicken? I mean...I know (I think) that chicken pieces would need to be cooked first, but what if I put a whole chicken in there & did...stuff...to it? Other ideas for one-dish crockpot meals--not recipes, but main ingredients that work & to which you can intuitively add seasoning/veggies/broths/etc? :bigear: TIA!

After countless phone calls, and emails to Rival I've been unable to get to get a simple question answered, namely: "Is there any lead in the glazes used in crock pots?" I've been totally stone-walled, and given "non-answers" to this question. Reading between the lines of the non-answers it seems clear there either is or may be lead used in the Rival crock pot glazes, but Rival will not answer the question directly. I'm promised a call back from a higher level executive tomorrow, but it seems pretty evident the company is unwilling to share basic consumer product safety information. The most they will say is "if" there is lead it is with-in safe limits and there has never been a recall over the presence of lead. If you ask if that means there maybe some "safe" amount of lead in the glaze you will get no direct answer to that question. And will be told to have it tested yourself. We love our Rival crock pot and have used it for years, but after learning from another thread here on WTM that Rival Crock pots were turning up positive for the presence of lead I've become concerned for the safety of my family, and felt I should share my concern with our community here. If you want to frustrate yourself, here is the Rival consumer information phone number: 1-800-323-9519 I'm sorry this thread is a "downer" but lead exposure is pretty serious and I don't think this company has been straightforward in addressing the issue.
