  1. I made a beautiful transcript for my daughter using a spreadsheet. Now, I want to upload it onto the common app, but it will not upload any of the formats I can save it into. It wants things like Word! Is there any technical way around this or do I need to send my transcript by snail mail.
  2. I found this CA post about the new "rollover" feature for application information. It gives a detailed explanation of what will save and what will need to be re-entered. http://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/college-counseling/common-app-account-rollover In a nutshell, essays, answers to writing prompts and documents don't seem to save. Recommendations don't seem to rollover. (I'm not sure if the actual recommendation will still be there for assignment or if the whole thing will clear. To be safe, I'm telling my son to wait on CA recommendations until August.) Some colleges change their requirements from year to year, particularly with short writing prompts. So you might be able to get an idea of what they are looking for, but be prepared to adjust if necessary. I really like this change, because it lets a student do some of the tedious part of the application earlier in the summer. By August 1, our local high schools have been in session for a couple weeks. If you write the CA essay over the summer and wait to upload it, you could have the majority of your apps ready to go before September, this could remove a lot of stress from senior year.
  3. I wanted to clarify a few things as I work on the CA today: In the student's workspace - Is the GPA ending date until the end of Jr Year since that is what the current GPA is based on? What do they want for: Highest grade/GPA in class? Indicate # of official transcripts: I just have one for ds but do I indicate two, if I'm uploading course descriptions as "2nd transcript"? I didn't know if the # indicated here is separate from the allowance of 4 transcripts. In the Homeschool supplement, where it asks for more info about philosophy, motivation etc, should I just state: "see attached school profile" or cut and paste the relevant sections. I managed to whittle down my course descriptions to under 500 KB (pdf) but if I add a footer it goes over. I am so sick of looking at this document...can I just attach it for the Common App without a footer or is that not appropriate. I am assuming that I cannot get to the Counselor letter part until the application is submitted. I'd like to work on that and be done with this part. I'm probably over thinking all this but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  4. I am almost ready to pull the trigger on the Counselor part of the Common App. I have the school info, student info, homeschool supplement, transcripts, etc. done. When I preview the submission, the first page is a CA summary of the details submitted in the school profile section (demographics, grading policies, etc.) There is a line for "AP Curriculum" with no information listed. I have searched all through the fields and cannot find anything that I missed or anything relating to this field. I have answered questions about the total number of AP and honors courses. That information is filled in on the preview. I'm looking a couple lines further down. Did anyone else notice this? Any solutions?
  5. We're thinking of using the Universal Application rather than the Common App where we can. About half of my D's schools are on it, her recommenders don't mind submitting her recs twice, and she and I don't mind doing our work in duplicate. It's more user-friendly than the Common App, and provides the option to insert web links in the main application to online art portfolios and such. Has anyone used it? Any downsides of using it in addition to the Common App ?
  6. Can anyone tell me how they reduced the size of their scanned (signed) transcript to the common app so that the size was small enough to upload? We don't have any special software. Did you have to download anything to make it work? Today's the deadline for one of DD's colleges. I didn't expect this as everything else has worked OK so far. Thanks!
  7. OK, another question. Might have been asked before, but I am blanking. I have uploaded the transcript under "transcript". I have uploaded the counselor letter where it is requested. I have filled out the boxes in the homeschool portion with sections from my school profile. What is everybody doing with the course descriptions? I see two possibilites: 1. Upload together with school profile in the school profile section, or 2. upload in the transcript section as separate file - they allow up to four "transcripts. Am I missing another spot where one can upload a file? 8FillTheHeart: where did YOU put the course descriptions?
  8. I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum. I tried to search before posting but didn't find anything. My eldest is a senior this year and is working on college applications. Since they've done away with the homeschool supplement, I'm not really sure where I fit into the process. Am I her "high school counselor"?? Do I need to create an account at commonapp.org? If so, would I be a "recommender"? Sorry for all the questions but this is our first time through this process and I'm totally intimidated and confused. Thanks so much in advance for any help!! blessings, Martha
  9. http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/10/new-common-application-will-be-a-stickler-for-essays/?ref=education
  10. For those of you who submitted course descriptions (Required by Chapel Hill) with you common ap, which section did you submit them under? I see two possibilities: 1. As an addendum to the School Profile or 2. In the same file as the transcript so the file would include: 1 page transcript, outside documentation/grade reports from PA homeschoolers etc to support the transcript and then 3 my 7 page course description. I'm torn....will those familiar with the common app please give me your opinions? Thanks! Nancy
  11. A question: Have you had your student's recommenders upoad their recommendation to the Common App even if they are not academic teachers? In the FAQ of the Common App website, it seems to indicate that non-teacher recommenders cannot submit the recommendation on the "Teacher Eval" form, but I think I have seen people recommend doing just that. Also, I am perplexed because there is an admonition to submit all electronically or nothing electronically, but does this include LORs??? :001_huh: Thanks for any comments.... ~Jen
  12. What does the common ap mean by the "guidance counselor title" - I put my name (parent) down as counselor name, but they want a title in the blank before that.....hmmmmm. Thanks, Myra
  13. So, I got my transcript with course descriptions uploaded and submitted the school forms. However, on the Homeschool Supplement, they have a transcript form to fill out. I would just re-enter the information, but there is only room for 4 classes per subject and, in some subjects, we have lots more than that due to dual enrollment at our local LAC and some smaller interest area classes. When I went to save it, I did not get an error message for not filling that in. Can I skip that part and go ahead and submit it since the transcript is elsewhere? School profile is all I have left after this, Yay!
  14. Anyone have a problem like this? When I try to up load the transcript (a .pdf), nothing happens. I don't get a pop up box asking me where the file is, like I did for the counselor letter. We need to get this done today because one of our Early Action deadlines is tomorrow. I did fill out a help ticket from them, but I haven't heard anything back but their canned response. What to do? What to do?
  15. I have a question ... My son has two non-teachers who have agreed to do letters of recommendation. However, the common app only seems to want teachers. Can he invite them? How does he do that?
