  1. What do you use? I'm also interested in hearing about programs that you tried and were unable to combine well. I have a large age span and am trying to have as few levels as possible: 9th 6th 4th 2nd K How would you do it? It is likely that I will leave my 9th grader out (she wants to learn another language anyhow, sigh) but if you have an idea that would easily pull her in, I'd like to hear it. ETA: All beginners in Latin. Thanks!
  2. Well, I am leaning towards MFW ECC, but don't want to miss out on some of the elements that have drawn me to WP. So, could you all help me brainstorm and figure out how I can add the things I like from WP into MFW? I want to incorporate pieces from CAW and AW into ECC. Which resources do you think I could easily fit into ECC without much tweaking? I love WP's exclusives so I want to use them where I can in ECC. I am not very familiar with ECC. For incorporating AW, does ECC already focus on the animals for a particular region? One of the things the children really wanted to do from WP was the HIH. They were drawn to the construction of the hideaways. I see in WP's AW they have a book about animal habitats. Do you know if it actually consists of building habitats that could satisfy the need to construct something to play inside of? So, for those of you familiar with both companies, can you help me decide which parts of WP I can fit into ECC? This would be for a 10yo, 8yo, 6yo, and 4yo. Thanks so much!
  3. Help me wrap my mind around this. If you had one logic level student and one grammar level student, what materials would you use, and how would you schedule them? Additional useful information: My logic level student excells at reading but lags WAY behind in writing due to Aspie-related coordination and mental processing issues. We're working on that, but he will likely be doing late grammar level writing rather than 8th grade level writing, though he can definitely handle 8th grade level reading, and even some high school level reading (if it were all high school level the attitude problems would kick in and we would get more whine than work out of him). My grammar level student is behind in both reading and writing, largely due to her ADHD inability to focus. We have been vacillating about medicating for this, as she is such a pleasant, delightful child with almost no real behavior issues apart from her very genuine inability to maintain attention. We are, however, falling off the fence on the side of medicating and will be scheduling an appointment with her doctor (whom we love) after I get back from my trip next week. She enjoys being read TO, especially if she can keep her hands busy with her latch hook, drawing, or little plastic figures of one kind or another to act out the story. She has a vivid and active imagination and enjoys drawing, though her high energy levels and attention span do, I think, affect the quality of her work. I am thinking we'll do a collaborative notebook binder rather than an individual notebook for each of them. I think this will encourage dd to want to be like the big kids in producing written work, and will motivate her to write, and I think it will motivate ds to try hard not to be outdone by his little sister in either quality or quantity of contributions to the notebook. So how does this shake out, though? Do I have them read separately, do their pages separately, and then get together and have each present their pages to the "group" (such as it is with just the three of us)? Do we read SOTW as a group, then give them supplementary reading to do individually? Dd is not yet at the point where she can really be turned loose with a book and just go read it, so I'd have to read hers TO her, and I KNOW ds would get jealous and want me to read his to him too...sigh...our "developmental" situation is very uneven and unorthodox around here. Do we read SOTW and maybe the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History pages together, and then assign additional "big kid reading" to ds? I would REALLY like to get him doing at least some one level outlines next year. That went over like a lead balloon this year, but I think we've worked around to where it might be a real possibility for next year. But if I remember right, the Usborne book isn't laid out really well for outlining. Should I get him the Kingfisher encyclopedia for that? I'm kind of chasing my tail...(Drat these dang disabilities! They make what's already difficult downright discombobulating. Grumble grumble.) What do you do at your house? What would you do with "normal" kids? What would you do with my kids? Thoughts? Suggestions? Brainstorms?

I will have four kids to school next year (6th, 4th, 2nd, k) and I am planning on combining them using SOTW as our spine for Ancient History and various materials for a Biology Year (Classification/Microscope/Animals, Plants, Human Body/Nutrition) My kids have never covered ancient history, but I am wanting to beef up the content for my 6th grader. How do I do that? Do I just assign reading to him separately? Does he still listen in on the books for the younger kids? I am planning on doing two different science projects (older and younger). Do you have any other good ideas?

I was sitting down to schedule out what we'd like to do for school next year....and the list of subjects seemed endless!:001_huh: Does everything have to be separate, or is there a good, effective way to combine subjects? I don't mean unit studies, but more the way of writing a history summary, or spelling your vocabulary studies.... I don't know...I guess I'm just overwhelmed at this point, trying to cover all subjects and not have to school around the clock! I will have a 5th grader and a 9th grader next year, and I want my highschooler to start delving more in depth. So I figure I have to combine some things....or leave some things out. Has anyone had success in combining different subjects?:bigear: I'd love to have a more efficient homeschool so we still have time to be a family...not just teacher/ students.:001_smile:
  6. I've heard people talking about using two math curricula because they feel that math is that important. I was wondering if anyone who is really Latin-centered uses two Latin programs? We're using Latin Prep, and dd really likes it and does NOT want to switch. But I've been rather drawn to the "immersion" type programs that really teach Latin reading primarily, and grammar and translation only secondarily, because one of our goals (I'm learning with her) is to be able to READ Latin literature. And with her learning style, I actually think these would work quite well. So I'm thinking of adding Ecce Romani in addition to Latin Prep. Is this crazy? Would it end up being confusing rather than helpful? Should we attempt both programs side by side, or do one for a term, then the other, etc.? Has anyone attempted anything like this?
  7. I was thinking about ordering Calvert for all my children. K,1st, and 4th grade. Has anyone ever done anything like that? Is it completely impossible? Should I just do the typical unit study and teach what I can to all 3 except for LA and Math? I just feel someone gets either held back or pushed forward.:confused:
