  1. I could use a set of "experienced" eyes to look at my plans for 9th grade English and help me make a decision. Its our first year, I'm still learning and I am not sure if I'm doing this right. I'll give a little background on how I got to this current plan: I originally had planned for her to take English Honors thru FLVS. I liked the idea of her having a teacher to answer to, not me =) BUT... After looking at their syllabus I realized it was going to be WAY too much reading for her on top of Ancient History readings. She is interested in studying Ancient History so we are going to have her do MOH vol1 and possibly vol 2 with a more in depth study on Egypt and Greek Mythology. She has expressed interest in workbook type curriculum's also, SOOOO I am thinking of getting CLE's English 1. (I bought CLE LA 400 for my 4th grader and she peeked through and is pretty happy with it.) CLE English is just 1/2 credit (grammar, essay & speech). They recommend taking their Literature units for the other 1/2 credit but its not mandatory and I'm not interested. The other 1/2 credit for English is listed as 10th grade. I also am VERY interested in getting her Ancient Literature Supplements with Grammar & Composition by MFW, it looks like a perfect fit with MOH. And they said it can stand alone as it is their spine for the English part of MFW. So looking at the scope & sequence of both above choices I have a dilemma, I have no idea how much is too much or if its not enough. If anyone has viewed the above curriculums: should I get CLE English 1, 9th and 10 grade AND the Ancient Lit supplement? Or should I have her just do CLE English 1 9th grade only along with the Ancient Lit supplement? Or is the Ancient Lit supplement enough on its own? Advice would be very much appreciated, I'm stumped on this one!!
  2. So in changing things up a bit, my oldest is doing the last few LU from CLE to round out the year before testing, as well as portable summer schoolwork(I know, I'm a mean mom...lol). Anyways, to my surprise, as I am flipping through LU 507 I notice this is not a grammar book at all, it's actually a workbook. It walks through a research paper. I have used IEW since the beginning for all my kids, so I was planning on skipping this. But, I have to say, it's really well done. My dd will work independently on this. The topics in this particular LU are: 1. Exploring the Encyclopedia 2. Learning from the Encyclopedia 3. Helps in the Encyclopedia 4. Is it a Good Subject? Choosing Your Subject 5. Writing the purpose Statement; Some review 6. Outline Review; Making Your Preliminary Outline 7. How To Take Notes 8. Taking Notes 9. More Note-Taking 10. Making Your Complete Outline 11. Beginning 12. Ending 13. The Final Copy 14. Finishing up;How You Will Be Graded The workbook alone is easy to use, no need for the TM.
  3. I am particularly interested in the writing portions for 7th grade and beyoned. How is it? Does anyone use CLE for highschool?
  4. I had a plan to utilize Jensen's Grammar, Vocab & Writing for my 10th grader this year. Then I received the CLE catalog & thought maybe I should simply use their english for 10th grade which has everything. Has anyone used CLE in HS for english. What are your thoughts?? Much appreciated.
  5. *Sigh* We have used R&S grades 3 - 8. Ds is is grade 7, but we started a year early. I am really not sure what to do from here on out. I know many folks stop after R&S 8. Ds is quite good at grammar, but I have a (irrational???) fear he will forget everything if we don't do something for grammar. I have looked at AG in the past and don't remember being that keen on it, though at this point, I cannot recall why. Could their "maintenance" workbooks be used by someone who has never used their program? It seems like it didn't seem quite as thorough as R&S??? I am considering MCT Magic Lens, but this seems like overkill/too much. As ds gets older time management is a bigger issue. Any ideas for something to use? I do not use the R&S writing. We are planning on OYAN next year, and I will definitely be adding in Word Within the Word for vocabulary. Then there is literature! It just seems like language arts is too time-consuming!! Especially for a dc who is mathy.
