  1. What is the usual progression of studies in high school, as far as U.S. History I, II, Modern World History, and Geography? Our state requires all of these, for a total of 15 credits. However, I don't see any requirement at all for U.S. Government/Civics. We definitely want to include this. Would appreciate any recommendations about the order of these courses. I'm thinking of U.S. History I and U.S. Government/Civics simultaneously. Would this be a problem?
  2. I'm looking for a one semester high school government course. Could you give me pros and cons of the programs you may have used?
  3. With election year coming, I was thinking it might be a good idea for my oldest kids to stop their history cycle and do a year of US government. (There's no hmmmm... smilie) I'm going to have an 8th grader and a 9th grader. We did a mandatory full year of Civics in 8th grade (this was in IL). So, I'm thinking 8th/9th grade is a good time. Anyone else considering this for next year? They could follow the election throughout the fall and end with the inauguration in January. By the time this comes around again, my oldest will be probably be graduated. Has anyone done a US government or civics course? What did you use? I'm going to look thru the suggestions in the rhetoric section of TWTM. I think Notgrass has a US government course, too (going to look at that also). Thank-you for any ideas! Edited to add: I just remembered when we did civics, we did a mock trial, too! That was fun.
  4. What recommendations do you have for curriculum that does not shy away from mentioning the Christian perspectives some Framers and Founders had in governing our nation? Thanks!
  5. This will be for our transition year (I know I've said it a billion times already) before 9th. I'm letting dd take some charge in some subjects that she would like to learn more about. Civics...government was one that she would like to dive into. She is finishing up with American History in the next month so it might work nicely for her to move on to civics. She has been listening to a lot of talk radio, mpr, current events, etc lately.....here I thought I had a "nurse at heart" on my hands but it looks like her interests are growing in politics....goodness, help me....let this be a phase! Anyways, I do not want something that will take all year....or have to be done everyday. I guess you'd say this would be an elective. It's possible to just have something that she can read throughout the year and watch some videos off of Discovery Education. We plan on doing some civic related field trips with homeschool group. **She already has Middle Ages on her plate and DIY Geography.** I was looking at CTT and Intellego. And then there is this book and this book. Has anyone used one of these and can give me a pretty accurate review on how their child's lessons went? We aren't crazy about reading from the computer, but we may give it a whirl anyway. Thanks for listening!
  6. So far I have found two options that don't seem dry as a bone. Basic Amerian Govenment, but I really don't have the time to do it with her....how much will it loose? The Uncle Eric books look like they would be her thing (more story based) but I get a headache trying to figure the order and if all the books put together make a complete course. Any opions and other options would be appreciated. Heather
  7. What text can we use for a full credit of civics? My rising 9th grader is very interested in politics right now and I'd like him to earn a whole credit instead of the half credit required in TN. My others have done "American Government" for a half credit using the book from Great Source. I'm going to be working more hours and will not have time to expand on this text. I'd love a full credit Civics text. Any ideas? Thanks!
  8. He'll be going into 9th grade in the fall. He would like to know about how different forms of government actually work, as well as in-depth information about the U.S. constitution and government. Ideas? Suggestions? I've been thinking that we'd do this sort of thing later in his high school career, but he's asking for it now, and it does seem like 2012 would be a good year to learn about the American political process. ETA: I would prefer resources that are as unbiased as possible. I know that's a tall order.

  10. I am researching books pertaining to the history and applications of our US Constitution to teach my high school daughter. A while ago I read a thread from this forum suggesting the following book, "The Making of America: The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution" by W. Cleon Skousen. Amazon reviewers raved this hefty read (888 pages), but would love to read your reviews. Anyone ever read this book and if so, have you implemented in your home studies? Thank you so much.
  11. I had an interesting thought as I reviewed our state's CSOs (Content Standards and Objectives) this evening. I saw a thread on this forum about this information and thought it might be worth a look. We are using SOTW, Usborne's Encylopedia, an atlas, globe, various maps and real books for our history study. I am completely in support of studying history chronologically. How do you incorporate various aspects of social studies into this? Having never seen volume 4 of SOTW, I'm not sure if this is an issue, but what about things like how government works, supply and demand, agricultre, citizenship, and various other topics that aren't exactly history? I know they are part of history, but how (and when) is that covered? It seems more like economics, but not entirely. When I was in ps, we had a Civics class in middle school that taught such concepts. I'd love to hear thoughts and ideas about this. This is stuff my son is very interested in anyway, so I'm not overly concerned about it being very difficult, I'm just not sure how to implement it. Thanks!
