Hello, Can anyone give me a recommendation for the best calculator for the AP Chemistry exam? It would be a bonus if it is also good for the SAT/ACT and other APs like AP Calculus. But, if I need to buy more than one, I will. The TI-84 plus series was recommended, but there seem to be several versions of it. I know that a simpler, cheaper calculator is also okay. We have the TI-30X IIS, and can use that one. I just thought it might be good to go ahead and start using one of the graphing calculators since those will be needed for other exams, like AP Calculus, and start getting fam

I have some questions regarding the upper level math calculators. My dd finished Alg.1 and Geometry and used my old scientific calculator (it's a Casio fx-350). This seemed to be fine. In Alg 2 it states that she should have a graphing calculator and recommends either a TI-82 or TI-83. My question is whether one of those 2 calculators is absolutely needed, or would the scientific calculator that we have work for Alg 2. If she is going to require one of the above for PreCalc/Trig and Calc, then I might as well get one. Just curious as to what is really required. Thanks to a

My son is 15 doing Saxon Algebra 1/2 I am seeing that he is starting to use a calculator in his work. Am I supposed to give him points for his work when he is using it? When is a typical time to allow calculators? My husband feels I am being too 'tuff' on my son because I feel a calculator is not needed for simple long division and other easy math problems. When I give him a test he gets frustrated and wants to pull out the calculator because it is too much work, of course I stay firm with my belief that he needs to do it without one until I know he can do it in long form. What can I do, any

We're not big calculator users here, but I'd like to teach my son to use it for the purposes of Explore and some of the more challenging work we do. Would appreciate suggestions!

I wanted to make this a little separate from the skills thread. I was grading math test yesterday and realized that now that they are in Algebra 1/2, the points being tested aren't really about how to do calculations as much as they are about how to set up a problem in order to extract the correct answer. I am a huge calculator grinch. I think that they tend to be handed to kids in schools well before the kids have mastered the skills that the calculator replaces. But it would appear that I also need to realize that there is a time for transition and we are there. Of the 40 questi

My sons are wondering why the scientific calculator is not permitted on the AP Calculus exam and therefore what it can do that the graphing one can't. While I'm at it - does anyone know on a graphing calculator - how to change a decimal answer to what I would call a "standard form" answer? (I could be wrong about those words so I'll give an example - to a fraction or a square root type answer)? We have a TI 84+ silver edition...but are getting a TI-Nspire shortly. Thanks! Joan

Granted, I studied a lot of math in the pre-calculator dependency era. But even today, after a certain point in mathematics study, a calculator is never used since the device does not help you prove your way out of a paper bag. That said, I have tried to adapt to teaching Calculus in this era during which the calculator is not only an accepted instrument but a required one on the AP exam. There are times when the calculator is optional, times when the calculator is not permitted and times when it is mandatory for full credit. There are integrals and equations that a student is expected

Do any of your dc do Calculus without a calculator? DS did Chalkdust Calculus last year with a graphing calculator and did very well in the course. This past fall, DS's first semester in college he was advised to retake Calculus because they did it differently, so he was told. I was confused about it, but know now what they meant was they taught Calculus without using a calculator. He had to do everything by hand. Is this common for college math? He got a "B" in the class. I was wondering if the graphing calculator becomes a crutch and actually is harmful to real understanding. Just wondering

I bought the TI-83 silver when it was cutting edge, but it just died. I need to upgrade but I don't know which to choose. My oldest daughter has the TI-89 and loves it, but if Jenna needs one in college Meghan can pass it down. I know not to buy the TI-89 because it can't be used on the SAT, right? So which do I buy and why? Barb

Hello all. Use of and restrictions on the use of calculators are perennial themes here. Jean has a thread going on the College Board regarding restrictions on calculator use in her son's College Math course. Regularly parents ask about which calculators are allowed on standardized tests. Etc. I wanted to weigh in with some new thoughts that I have had regarding the use of graphing calculators of the TI-83 or 84 vintage. I have not fiddled with the new TI-nspire (a name which annoys me) nor do I have personal experience with the more sophisticated calculators that have symbolic manip

My son will be taking the Explore pre-ACT test next week, and a note we just received from the test administrator listed a calculator among the things to be brought to testing. We have not yet used a calculator in our math lessons, so we don't have one. We are in the first part of Saxon Algebra 1. Would you please recommend some makes/models of calculators? I believe my son will be able to do the math portion of the test without a calculator - I don't want to bog him down by introducing one so soon before testing - but I guess we will need one for the future. I would also like to know
