  1. I've been lurking on these boards and I just had to create a topic because I just can't decide. I have a 7 year old son (Gifted+ ADHD), an almost 6 year old son (ADHD hates lots of writing) and a 2 year old girl. My eldest was doing Singapore Prime Math at his private Catholic school and when the pandemic hit, we chose to homeschool instead of online learning. He has always excelled at math. Always at the top of his class, 100% or 98% semester average for math and just seems to get it naturally because he loves it. Well since he seemed to love it so much, I bought the 2nd book (2A/Coursebook 2 depending on where you live), everything seemed to be going ok until we hit adding/subtracting with zero. So for example 509-273 or 800-198. He kept on making lots of mistakes. He knows he should borrow and all the steps etc. But for some reason he would get it wrong. On closer inspection I realized that in 1A it only says something like "zero minus a number gives you back the number and zero plus a number gives you back the number". Plus the emphasis of counting/adding by tens kept on tripping him up in HTO regrouping. So then I had to explain and teach him the traditional way (like how most of us were taught). Plus I asked his father to help since he's excellent at math. Long story short, I realized that while Singapore was pretty and has great word problems, it's not the math for our family. We are very academic in our household and math is important. I'm more of an allrounder but prefers Languages and Arts. Now, I read through these boards and watched countless YouTube reviews and have narrowed it down to BJU Press Math and Rod and Staff Math. I just would like the opinions of experienced homeschoolers who have used both and why as well as, which do you prefer? Additionally, one of my main concerns is that BJU is so expensive and I wonder if Rod and Staff would be boring or too much drill. I ultimately would like to find a foundational programme that could work for all my children. And yes, I do know that everyone learns differently but I need a spine. Also lots of people have recommended Math Mammoth but I know my boys would complain about it and I just don't like how it looks. Someone please HELP! Thanks.
  2. Dd is almost finished with TT Alg. 1 for the year. We are taking a transition year next school year before 9th grade and have decided to do Algebra 1 again. So, I've been looking at Saxon and BJU. I have Saxon Art Reed Alg.1 Dvd's sitting on my shelf, but dd isn't sure she can stand the Saxon approach again (she used Saxon 7/6 and 8/7). She says she'll do it but she gets annoyed that every lesson jumps to a different topic. Does BJU Alg have much review like Saxon? I'm open to other options..... But I would like to stay put with math and not bounce around with publishers. Would BJU math be a solid option to continue through high school? Being secular, would the religious content in BJU be overbearing in the math department? If I decided to place my rising 6th grader and 3rd grader in BJU math, would they need to take a placement test? Thanks everyone! 😃
  3. My son with learning delays has a HORRIBLE time with math. We've tried it all. Asian-style would be my preference but it's just too abstract for him. We just did a year in CLE Math and it's like we never did it. He needs more time on each skill. I've narrowed down to these two (BJU Math and Rod&Staff) and possibly MCP Math. Can anyone help on this? I'm at my wit's end here. Which of these will explain it best to him and then give him a lot of practice (ALOT)? and also give me help in explaining it? ETA: In case it helps, we've tried, CLE Math, RightStart, Singapore, Math Mammoth, MathUSee, Saxon, Teaching Textbooks...... Thanks,
  4. DD12 is using BJU Math 7 this year. We're just getting into the chapter on Equations and she loves it! She's actually excited to be learning something new instead more fractions and decimals. This child is mathy, but she's not a motivated student. She understands fractions, decimals, exponents & negative numbers, but sometimes forgets and needs reminding. For instance, when faced with a fraction division problem, I might have to say "multiply by the reciprocal" and she says "oh ya" and does it with no problem. Here's my dilemma. Pre-Algebra will give her the additional practice she needs, but she's getting totally bored with these fundamentals. She's happy when she's introduced to something new like Equations or Geometry. Should we trudge through another year of fundamentals with Pre-Algebra for the extra practice? Or should we start Algebra and take it slow? She'll be in 7th grade so I don't mind spending two years on Algebra, but I don't want to get half-way through the year and realize she's lost because she doesn't have a strong enough foundation. Please share your experience or opinion. Thanks!
  5. I went to the curriculum store in the nearby town ( well an hour away). I looked at and bought a used BJU Geometry text for 50 bucks. For that 50 dollars I got the student text, 2 teacher texts, test/ quiz book, test/quiz answer key. If for some reason, the hive thinks this is an awful choice, I will just sell it back and recoup my money. That seemed like a good price for all of that. Ok. What I like about BJU- The concepts seem to be in a logical progression. The text is simple and not nearly as confusing as the HEATH text is. It is much simpler. He hasn’t seen it, but this seems MUCH easier to read on your own than the Heath. I still might teach the material first. A lot of this book will be review. That said, I’m sure it will show me where his holes are. The teacher’s edition is very helpful. It has tips and common areas where students get confused. I will not need the videos. Very simple. Cons- One of the reasons I have avoided any BJU products like the plague is the sledgehammer presentation of Christianity. I am a strong Christian, but the Geometry and Scripture section in each chapter is really stretching it. Do we really need to prove that Geometry can be found in the Bible? My son is going to roll his eyes at the heavy-handedness. The main concern I have, which may not be a concern is how much lighter it is than Chalkdust. I learned (by studying the BJU book) that analytical geometry is the intersection of algebra and Geometry. The BJU book has one small section in each chapter. That’s it. The Heath book is FILLED with tons of analytical Geometry in every chapter. In the BJU book it has and A section for practice that are easy (much like the check for understanding in the Heath book), B that are harder and then a few C that are meant to be challenging. The majority of the Heath book contains the C like problems. I guess my goals for my son are these: For us to survive Geometry without killing each other, for him to have a good grasp of the basics of Geometry, to do well on the Geometry section of standardized tests. Here is a comparison of one chapter of the Chalkdust Heath book with what is in BJU. I would love any comments from you mathy moms. 3.1 Parallel, Perpendicular, and Oblique lines Theorem: Transitivity of Parallel Lines Theorem: Property of Perpendicular lines Some of this is in BJU chapter 2 3.2 Solving systems of linear equations Finding an equation of a line ( slope intercept form)) – sometimes given points and writing equations, sometimes given equations and writing points, determining whether lines are parallel and perpendicular from the equation or given points and having to write equation to determine that WOW. Difference in BJU is striking. On in the middle of chapter 4 it explains what slope is and then has 4 problems with points to find the slope and then 2 graphs to write the explanation.. Chapter 6 has an analytical section on finding the equation of the line passing through a point and having a slope and then 5 problems to practice. Another one in chapter 13 where it just talks about how to tell if a line is perpendicular to the line by using the slope. 3.3 Contrapositives Laws of Logic ( BJU has an entire chapter on Preparing for proofs. Chalkdust seems to piecemeal it. Conditional statements are in 2.4, contrapositives here, syles of proof in 3.4. BJU covers all of this in their chapter 5) 3.4 Styles of Proofs: paragraph, flow and two-column - Having to write each style BJU- chapter 5. BUT only 2 column proofs are used. No mention of flow and two column in the entire book. 3.5 Properties of Parallel Lines Angles formed by transversals: corresponding, alternate interior, alternate exterior, and consecutive interior as well as all the theorems that go with them. BJU 6.4 3.6 Proving Lines are Parallel Converse of above theorems, constructing parallel The proof information is in 6.4, but there is no construction. 3.7 Vectors Writing a vector as an ordered pair, sum of vectors, dot product of vectors One sentence explaining what they are and how some people confuse them with rays and that they won’t be covered in this course.
  6. We've used BJU Math for several years now. I've tried Horizons in the past, but (at the time) just couldn't get used to the "spinning out of control" feel of the multiple topics and weird way that it introduced a topic and then dropped it. I also desired a conceptual introduction, rather than a "just do it" algorithm approach (ex: BJU uses tens/ones to introduce adding with carrying/renaming, whereas Horizons just has you carry the one). I have a much better understanding of math now, and I also bought the Math Mammoth Blue series to help deepen our study of math. I've noticed, though, that Horizons covers a lot more topics than BJU and has a higher expectation for the student. Some topics BJU barely covers or doesn't introduce at all. I'm also noticing that Time4Learning is also introducing some topics in 4th gr math that BJU doesn't teach yet. We're already behind in math & trying to catch up. I'm concerned that BJU covers so much less topically than Horizons and T4L. I'm thinking Horizons is really preparing the student for preAlg in 7th gr, whereas BJU is probably gearing that toward 8th gr. I'm thinking about switching to Horizons (& using MM to help deepen our understanding). But OTOH, I'm concerned that maybe having sooo many topics is not a good idea, either. Horizons vs BJU - what do you think? Is it better to have a simple, conceptual understanding of math (BJU) or to have the spiral, multi-topics, pre-Alg work of Horizons? Esp for a child that is already behind & trying to catch up (BTW, she's behind because of *my* poor teaching, but I've learned my lesson and she is working with me to catch up).
  7. I'm deciding what math curriculum to use next year for 4th grade, and I'm thinking of using Sinapore Math. I have used BJU and Abeka primarily, but the incremental approach is driving me crazy. For K, I used Singapore, then switched to BJU for 1-2. For 3rd, I had older copies of Singapore 2A and 2B on my shelf (with HIGs) so I started with those, but I felt completely overwhelmed. The mental math was particularly confusing to me. I definitely have weaknesses in my understanding of some basic math. I also felt like it wasn't clear what I was supposed to be doing and when. The books are too sparse, especially compared to BJU and Abeka. I need more hand-holding than the HIGs provided (if you can imagine that). Once we finished 2A and 2B, I bought Abeka based on recommendations from friends. But Abeka jumps around SO much from lesson to lesson. Nothing feels connected. My son is better than average at math, so he has progressed well no matter what books we use. But I need to be able to teach it, ultimately. And I want him to understand the concepts well enough to go as far as he wants in math. My question is this: should I try Singapore Standards edition? Is the material for the teachers easier to understand than the older Singapore HIGs? I have 4 more kids coming along behind my oldest, so I'd like to find something I like and stick with it for all of the kids. Although in some sense I trust that Abeka will give a good foundation in math skills, it is distracting to me and to my son that there doesn't seem to be much fluidity. I purchased Math Mammoth and like the approach better than Abeka, so I think the mastery approach appeals to me more than incremental. But I would feel more comfortable using something more standard like Singapore (or even Abeka or Saxon) as my primary text (and Math Mammoth as a supplement). I want to be certain that, should there ever come a day that my kids must go to public or private school, they'll know what they need to know.
  8. I can't find where I can have my soon to be 3rd grader take a placement test for BJ math. Lance will start K=start in K;) Ethan, 2nd grade-Ethan understands the concept of add. & sub. but hasn't memorized all his math facts. He has done some MM but it hasn't been consistent. I was thinking of starting him with 1st grade Brent 3rd grade-he has completed CLE 1, and half of Spunky Math (R&S Schoolaid) but am considering maybe starting him in the 2nd grade anyway. What would you all recommend? Is there enough review that Brent can start at grade level or should I just back up? He knows time, money, some fractions, some borrowing, place value, temperature, lower multiplication Wondering the same with Ethan, if there is enough review can he start the 2nd grade? I know some math programs review the previous years math at the beginning, not sure about BJ though. Thank you,
  9. Hello, DS can do math pretty darn well for his age, and he has been doing Horizons K. I want to change curriculums next year. I want the Teacher Manual to be of actual use! I want it to tell me what I need to say, help me teach it. Color is helpful. LOVES manipulatives. Also, if you recommend Saxon, then what in the world is the meeting book for??? Is it just calendar stuff? DS knows the calendar. Thanks so much! If you need any other info from me, just let me know!
  10. My dd is not complaining...not crying and is actually giggling. This week we used Life of Fred and I just did not have the heart to break out our regular math books. I really feel like this kid needs to learn how to think logically in order to get the right answers and Fred is encouraging her TO THINK!!! I love it.... BUT, the lessons take her over 1/2 hour to do each day, and I just do not have the time nor th energy...and she does not have the inclination or desire to do more math than that right now...so we have to decide between Fred ...which we both LOVE..and BJU which we both tolerate ok enough. So, what says the hive?? ~~Faithe
