  1. Another thread and a post by Ruth has really got me thinking. It seems all our subjects are so restrictive and in depth when it comes to how we do them. I have been racking my brain for weeks now trying to figure out why it seems we are spending all day doing school and not really much being accomplished. Why cant you pick a list of topics and let the child read and watch about it? I think this would really work for my kiddos but I guess I am lacking the knowledge to step out and do it. I want my kids to have more time for math not just their regular curriculum but all the extras. I want them to have more time to focus and explore in science. Both girls are excellent spellers and their writing is coming along fine. So why do I take the time out of our days to do things I don't think they need? Mainly because of the pressure I feel from other moms. I read some of the threads on here and other boards and moms are doing 3 math programs, 2-3 languages, 2 sciences multiple history and I always feel like we are lacking. So what do I do? I add more!!! This is not working! I need to find away to revamp our school days so the kiddos have more time to learn in their way. Any thoughts?
  2. I know SWB recommends it and it is a strong English program. I know English grammar is supposed to be challenging. Is R & S is not a good fit for us? DS10 (4th gr.) is using English 4. Here is why I grind my teeth and bang my head on the table: It is so thorough that it is mind numbingly tedious. We do NOT need so.much.detail. Too much to do. I can skip but I dislike wading thru jell-O for a few nuggets of gold. I want a more streamlined way to learn English grammar. Why oh why must we spend so much effort on the minutae of English grammar? :) ETA: Temper Tantrum over Rod and Staff is officially over. We are going to sample KISS (the first section) to see if anything lights up for us. Otherwise, I will relax and let R&S do it's thing. Perhaps I need to see the easiness of the work as a blessing right now because there is plenty of challenge to keep us on our toes in other subjects.
  3. I'm wondering-- can an advanced 8th grader handle (and enjoy) BJU's 9th grade Physical science (with the videos)?? In a nutshell, here's my deal: Ds (12) will finish 6th grade this spring. Next year he'll start Algebra (we're wrapping up Singapore 6 this spring) and junior high science to prepare him for highschool level work (ideally, I'd like him to take Biology in 9th, Chem. in 19th, and Physics in 11th so that he has his 12th grade year for advanced science if he's so inclined). Thus far, we've done very little outling and very little science w/ a structured program (lots of videos, lots of library books, but no textbooks or significant structure). He's had science this year and last via co-op, but he hasn't retained a ton. This year he's taking Bio (using The Rainbow text), but I'm not thrilled with the class or his retention. Originally I was leaning, therefore, towards BJU's Life Science for 7th grade and their Space/earth for 8th. Now, though, I'm questioning the need to take physical science before the more complex sciences (in which case, I'd like him to do that in 8th grade... BEFORE high school). So.... what do I do? Can a non-outlining newbie-to-BJU handle their space/earth in 7th and their physical science in 8th (to then move on to Bio in 9th)? Or should I look more seriously at the Life Science course (since his bio this year has been sketchy at best) for 7th-- to help him ease into/adjust to a junior high level work load? And then what? Space/ Earth w/ NO physical science at all? OR Physical science (in 8th) either via BJU or another text (perhaps Apologia if you think BJU's will be to streneuous). He's a very bright boy and he does very well with his studies, but the outlining required of BJU will be very new to us (as well as the work load required for that subject)-- I'm a bit concerned about entering high school with his/my sanity still in tact!! So... please advise!! I really want him to take some BJU science, and I want him to learn from Mrs. Vick if possible (I've heard such great things!). I'm just really struggling with what to do over the next 2 years to best prepare him for high school. And thanks :)
  4. I have all this great curriculum that I really like but never really use effectively. Some are resource guides, some great websites, good books, etc. I look at it, want to really work on incorporating it into my school, but just don't get it done. I would just love to pull together a really "FUN" year. I was thinking how resourceful everyone is here on the board and thought, wouldn't it be great to have a few of you over to help me. Well, maybe if I start now I'll have it all together by next fall.
