  1. I cannot seem to find the thread/s for American School - specifically their Essential Mathematics course - the one that most people seem to strongly dislike. Dd completed the first Essential Mathematics course and it was, without a doubt, the absolute worst math course I have ever encountered. At the time, we did not know that she could opt out of it. I wish that we had known this. She has now received the second Essential Mathematics course. I haven't had much time to look at in detail. It looks rather unappealing (yet again). Does anyone have any experience with this specific course? Can she opt out of it? Are there any benefits to just sticking with it? Thank you.
  2. Dd is doing American School and she's doing very well, given that it's rather bland at times. Their math is simply awful, however. I have never, ever seen a worst math program than theirs :banghead:. Their writing also leaves much to be desired. The only reason we went with American School is that it's accredited, simple for the most part, and all the other advantages that have been mentioned in other threads. I'm concerned for ds who will need to start on a high school program in the next year or two. He struggles. Is there anything that's even simpler and is accredited? Thank you. He'll do fine with all the subjects except their math and writing. He doesn't do well with most writing programs. He does fine with most math programs, but again, American School's math simply and absolutely stinks .
  3. I have two specific questions about AS and a general high school transcript question. I am trying to figure this out way ahead of time, but we feel we need to have a plan for HS before he reaches the middle school years. First, for the college prep diploma, are students allowed to substitute more difficult classes ? For example, instead of taking their "essential mathematics" 1, 2 and alg I, could a student take alg I, alg II, and geometry or calculus ? Instead of the non-lab biology, take the lab biology ? Second, both Keystone and AS are accredited by AdvanceED. Will AS give credit toward a diploma for high school courses completed at Keystone ? My general transcript question: If a student completes a diploma program at AS, but you want more on their transcript than was required for the AS diploma, would it be odd to submit a transcript with a completed diploma program and additional courses completed elsewhere ? Thanks !
  4. I had never heard of this before. Someone was talking about it in another thread and I am interested in hearing more. I looked up the website but a few things weren't clear... how much does it cost... if you transfer credits in ... do you really just need 18 to graduate? where can I find a list of colleges that accept the accrediation of this school? If you or a friend has used this option, please tell me about your experence - a lot of online reviews are really bad - but they sound off somehow - would much rather hear experences of people here. Thanks so much for any information. :bigear: Sandy
  5. I signed my son up for American School. We have received the first book. I have a few questions... How many books do they send at one time? Is primary communication with the school by phone and snail mail? Are there any tips and hints you can give us? I really appreciate it!
  6. Last year dd came home after trying public highschool for 8 weeks. We had originally told her she had to go for the whole semester but after our pediatrician told us she was clinically depressed we brought her home and she was so glad. Well, she and I didn't get much done. In all my years of hsing I had never taught highschool and we were floundering and failing. This summer after much prayer and research I chose to enroll her in American School's college prep program. She doesn't want to go to a 4yr college; she is looking at going to the art institute or the culinary institute. I have a two friends who used this school and were pleased with the results. I know it's not rigorous but it gets the job done. I just didn't have the faith in myself to homeschool her myself and I am feeling like a failure. I look at everyone's schedule and choices of curriculum here and feel like I have settled for "less". I guess we can try this for a year and see but I told her that once we pay the down payment we are committed. Anyone else feel like me? Tried American School? Honestly, it was looking like she wasn't going to graduate highschool til she was 19, a year later than she should, and I didn't know if I could live with myself if that happened.
  7. I am hoping for some answers from experienced people! Or at least somebody who knows more about this than me! We have decided to go with American School for high school with my son for the fall. I have a few questions. If we want to start in August, when do I register with them? How many courses do we get at a time? What are the courses for 9th grade? Any info at all about them would be great!
  8. I'm considering this for my son because he needs the accountability. We cannot afford some of the other schools (Keystone, Oak Meadow) so they are not an option at this point. American School also has a very nice payment plan. I was digging around there website and saw that as soon as you send a payment they send you ONE course. I called them and she said that yes, they only send one course at a time. So are the kids really expected to work all day on one course for how ever long it takes them then send it in for the next one? I can't imagine only working through algebra for only part of the year then being done with it. Am I misunderstanding how it works? RhondaM.
  9. Or something like that? I really need to pass the bean dip to my mom sometimes. She was talking to someone on a train in PA(?) who uses it and thinks I need to look into it. OH! The bean dip isn't b/c of American School Correspondence. I know nothing about it! The bean dip is for all the normal bean dip reasons. I just want to know if someone has an opinion on it.
  10. Has anyone had any experience with them? What can you tell me about them? ... negative or positive experience? Thanks.
  11. I'm at my wit's end here with this school. My son has been a student of their's for a little over a year now and this is the first time that we've been aggravated with them! My son was anxious to be done with their Biology course (quite hard) and thought he was until July 7th. He mailed in exam 7 on that day, even handed it to our mailman personally, but they've never received it! American School received and graded exams 8 and 9, though. I've called 4 times and got the response of, "wait another week" because it's summer and there's a lot of vacations, etc. OK, I understand that, but what about the students who school year round? Anyway, I just called and spoke with yet another woman who told me that there's NEVER been a trace put on this particular exam! ARRRGGGH! My son NEEDS to be done with this course to get credit for it, right?? Hopefully, now something will be done about it. Either it will be found, which I doubt, or he'll have to re-do the whole test again, a more likely scenerio. It seems like the higher the postage rate goes up, the worse the mail system gets. Thanks for letting me rant, gals!
