  1. Hi everyone, In an effort to try to help bridge the gap between children and the environment, I've created an video learning series that aims to teach kids stewardship and coastal science concepts in a fun and engaging way through stories and characters. The series was made in partnership with the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet, Florida. There are five episodes so far as well as four support documentaries that are freely available to watch on Vimeo. You can also download them to watch offline if need be. We are currently developing new series and are always trying to improve so any and all feedback is welcome and very much appreciated. I sincerely hope that some of our films are helpful! :-) https://vimeo.com/333726652
  2. Hello Forum Folks, The Well-Trained Mind team is committed to helping you and your children navigate the wilds of education...whether through these forums, our books and audio products, our online courses, or our website. As part of that commitment, we are always looking for new ways to bring content to you. Can you help us? If you post a response to any or all of the following queries, you'll be entered to win one of five Well-Trained Mind tote bags we're giving away! How do you use streaming video content in your educational efforts? Do you watch videos about homeschooling, parenting, skill development, or education? Do you use videos with your children as part of your lessons (not counting full online classes such as Well-Trained Mind Academy)? What are your favorite programs/channels/presenters for this type of content? Why? How long, on average, are these videos? And: For this content, do you use paid services (Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, other [please describe]) or primarily free ones (YouTube, etc)? Thank you for your help! We'll announce the winners by December 7th. Justin and the folks at The Well-Trained Mind
  3. I am in college and I am looking for recommendations for a writing/grammar program for my kids. Their grades are 5th, 8th, and 11th. Video instruction would be a plus, but not necessary. I just want something solid, they can do on their own in this subject. I would be checking in, especially with the youngest. What have you used that you could really recommend?
  4. I just noticed that Ruth (aka-lewelma) has a third grader (yes, just noticed) and I know she uses documentaries for her history: Button will be in third grade next year, and I would be so so happy to move toward a Ruth-like history of reading, maps, documentaries, and writing assignments as they come from our writing program (IEW). Do y'all have ideas of good history documentaries for children this young? Button is esp. sensitive, though growing out of it -- his father or I would watch these with him. If they wouldn't traumatize the preschooler either, that's extra credit! Please do also include documentaries that wouldn't esp. be good for a sensitive child -- I'm going to hope that there are enough responses to warrant this, and put a post onto this thread for each WTM period and update them with resources y'all post. I may not get it all updated until this evening, though, DH & littles are due back from their hike soon. I'll assume old-earth content, since most documentaries do, and am happy to include young earth videos esp. with notes, so that the young-earth parents can find them easily. Thanks in advance!
  5. Does anyone have suggestions for good videos/documentaries about the Crusades? I am pretty sure none would be suitable for my 7yo student (but be so happy to hear of any that are suitable!), so I'm mainly thinking about my own education. For these purposes, I was hoping documentary-style and not official lectures (a la Teaching Company); I hope to hit the Official Lecture route when we cycle 'round to the Logic years. thanks in advance! I have requested from our library, for self-education, three books and I'll put them onto the thread FWIW The New Concise History of the Crusades (supposed to be a good introduction, gives insight into both the noble goals -- which is what I myself need more of -- & the unfortunate realities) The Crusades: The Authoritative History of the War for the Holy Lands (very strong editorial reviews; apparently the author is outstanding) The Crusades Through Arab Eyes (also excellent editorial reviews & authorship; considered relevant to understanding the contemporary Middle East)
  6. What instructor materials have you been able to access from the big publishers (Prentice Hall, McGraw Hill, Addison-Wesley, etc.) that accompany intro level college science texts (chemistry and physics)? Could anyone give a rundown of what can be purchased by a homeschool teacher? I'm interested in materials that have quality virtual labs, tutorials - either power point type or video lessons, plenty of worked problems, a thoroughly worked answer key, tests, and a great quality textbook. Also, have you found that there are sufficient resource links to enhance and reinforce material lbeing studied? How difficult is it to aquire these materials (as a homeschool parent) and is customer support reasonable? Have you had success teaching college prep science using these materials? Thanks!
  7. Possibly this contest will be of interest to some of your DC, 13 to 18 years of age. There are USD$3000 in prizes. Here is the URL: http://stopbullying.challenge.gov/ The video is for the U.S. Government.
  8. We've posted a new, 10-minute video to our YouTube channel: Susan Wise Bauer introducing and explaining our new middle-grades writing curriculum, Writing With Skill. She includes tips for getting the most out of the instructor book & student book, grading student assignments, etc. Plus, if you zoom WAAAAY in on the background, you can see what Susan is reading these days. 9. Hello, Some for you may be familiar with my Latinum podcast. Over the summer, I have been working on an audio-visual Latin course, that is grammar intensive, yet teaches Latin through only using Latin. It is aimed at complete beginners, and would, I believe, be suitable for children, and adult students. Even quite advanced students are using it, as the course teaches through spoken Latin, doing a lot to activate the language and re-program the brain to think in Latin, using a varied sequence of little dialog sequences. Declensions and verbs etc are examined in Latin. The course has a lot of interactivity, loads of props, lots of repetition, and a fun dinosaur glove puppet. So far, I have uploaded 130 short lessons. Some lessons will need to be listened to a few times, others only once. And all this is totally free. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/evan1965
